Subject : Federer, The Greatest Of All Time

The Fed Express, the Swiss Maestro, that is Roger Federer. It is a name that strikes fear into the hearts of most, if not all opponents. Many critics and players have considered Federer to be the greatest tennis player of all time. In a nutshell, some of Federer’s biggest accomplishments can be summarized as followed: 24 Grand Slam finals, appearances in 18 out of 19 finals from the 2005 Wimbledon Championships through the 2010 Australian Open. He spent nine years (2003 – 2011) continuously in the top 3 in the year-end men’s rankings, rivaling Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, thus creating some of the greatest competition the tennis world has ever witnessed.

A little background about Federer’s early life states that Federer was born 1981, in Binningen, Switzerland near Basel, to Swiss national Robert Federer and South African-born Lynette Durand, of Dutch and French ancestry. Federer holds dual citizenship of Switzerland and South Africa, and also speaks Swiss German, German, French and English fluently. With regards to his personal life, Federer is married to former Women’s Tennis Association player Mirka Vavrinec. They were married on 11 April 2009 and have since given birth to a pair of identical twin girls.

Federer is well known for his all rounded versatility in terms of playing style on court. His vision for passing shots, coupled with his technical capability to move his opponent all around the court makes his game one of the most lethal and intelligent throughout the professional tennis circuit. An interesting fact to note about Federer’s exceptional shot-making is due to the way he adjusts his racket grip to play each shot to perfection.

The basics of Roger Federer’s forehand grip sees him holding the racket in some form of the Eastern grip, a grip considered more conservative than most other professional players on tour. The dexterity in maneuvering a top spin grip as well as a flat grip approach leaves Federer spoilt for choice when applying various shot selections thus allowing him to create the narrowest possible angles, often resulting in winners. Furthermore, Federer’s preparation in timing and taking his shot is as precise and consistent as what one expects in order to perform a perfect forehand shot. The turning of his shoulder, together with his lower body, creates dynamism and an impact so solid such that a full and complete action results in shots ranging from 60-100mph.

Moving on to Federer’s backhand, it is a powerful and efficient stroke that is adaptable and versatile. Federer’s backhand is designed to neutralize his opponents shot while maintaining good depth on his returns. Federer uses a standard backhand grip for the one handed backhand which is widely known as the best suited grip for the stroke. In preparation for the backhand, Federer executes a unit turn (a consecutive turning motion from shoulder to lower body), allowing his body to load up power in the core muscles to generate a powerful shot. An important point to note about Federer’s backhand is that his contact point is in front of the body. Following through is also important when deciding on a topspin or a flatter backhand, with the latter requiring somewhat more of a shorter swing coupled with less of a follow through.

Overall, Federer plays mainly from the baseline but this does not necessarily mean that his net game should be negated. He has a powerful and accurate smash and his volleys are also sublime. It is clear that Federer strives to improve the level of his game constantly, and this is substantiated by the addition of drop shots in his game. Drop shots, typically not a common shot applied even at the professional level, is seldom used due to the level of risk involved, especially during crucial points. A good drop shot results in a high pressure retrieving shot (for the opponent) or even a winner in some cases, but a bad drop shot gifts the opponent with the luxury of putting the ball away with a simple winner. Federer establishes himself as a world class professional once more by astutely applying the drop shots in several situations, causing his opponents to scramble to the net while barely retrieving the shot, thus allowing Federer to put the ball away with ease.

Much more can be said about Federer. It is clear that he is a crowd favorite, having won the ATPWorldTour.com Fan’s Favorite Award a record nine times straight (2003-2011) and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award (voted by players) a record seven times (2004-2009, 2011), both awards indicative of the amount of respect and popularity he has garnered over the years. His charitable efforts throughout the world (e.g. organizing exhibition matches and having the proceeds donated to disaster-struck zones) are also commendable.

Having said all this, I am honored to be living in an era where we have possibly witnessed the greatest tennis legend of all time.

All hail Roger Federer!

Like in all religions sport has its ceremonies and rituals. For example, on Olympic Games all teams marching with the flags of their countries and wearing the same outfits. Listening to the national anthems. Also, the athletes can have their individual rituals, like: touching the grass before getting on the field or dancing after scoring a touchdown. Like Gods in standard religions in sport we have athletes whose names we will always remember and respect for their achievements in a particular sports. For example: Muhammad Ali will always be the God of boxing, Roger Federer – tennis, Michael Jordan – basketball, and a lot of others in each sport. ...Renata Bakieva Professor Carla Pastor English 1100 sec 198 10 October 2012 Back on Top In “Roger Federer arrives at this year’s US Open in the midst of a new chapter in his storied career,” Stephen Tignor uses rhetorical strategies to convince Federer’s fans that he (Federer) had won the Wimbledon title because of the successful changes he had undergone since winning the last major trophy. Tignor asserts that the influence of Federer’s mother, his twin daughters, and the hiring of a new coach were the reasons he had won the Wimbledon title (Tignor 27). To achieve his goal of convincing the audience, Tignor utilizes a variety of rhetorical strategies: description, comparison and contrast, narration, process analysis, and augmentation. These rhetorical strategies combine to convince Federer’s fans that he was able to win the Wimbledon title because of the influence of the changes he had introduced in his life. While using description as a rhetorical strategy, an author uses figurative language and sense details to support a given assertion concerning a person or object of discussion. Tignor in the article argues that Federer’s twin daughters, his mother, and the new coach were the reason why he had won the Wimbledon title after failing in the previous attempts to win a major title in tennis (Tignor 27). Tignor asserts that in his previous wins and losses, the three persons had not attended his matches; the Wimbledon win was their first attendance. Tignor...

Western Parenting Compared to Asian Parents

...It was only a few days before receiving this assignment that both my children (seven, and eight years old) came home from school with negative reports informing me about performance delays, behavior concerns, and daily mishaps in the classroom.  As a concerned parent, I decided to restrict them to their rooms, take away all forms of entertainment (i.e. games, movies, or tablets) for two weeks, and ordered an earlier bedtime. With tears pouring down their young faces and a plethora of apologetic promises, my children began to scream like Patrick Henry “give me liberty or give me death.” In retrospect, after reading the articles from Amy Chua and Hanna Rosin (two polar opposites with controversial cultural distinctions on how to raise and discipline a child) it would be an honest assessment that (figuratively speaking) I gave my boys both “liberty and death.” Amy Chuna, a Chinese mother raising two daughters Sophia and Louisa, holds a traditionally strict parenting style. Within her Asian household, Amy focuses on the success and discipline of her children, raising them on an ancient Chinese philosophical idea that “nothing is fun until you are good at it” and “happiness comes from mastery” (Chua, 2011). According to Chua, her daughter were “never allowed to attend sleepover[s], have a playdate, be in a school play, watch TV, play computer games, or get any grade other than an A” (2011). Chuna’s beliefs for an overzealous discipline, combined with extremely high expectations...

Community Services

...point of view, Will Rogers principles about physically fit cities and on how we should shape our cities, the vision of growing a city honors equality and diversity. Recycling brownfields abandoned and underutilized property to create parks for the communities is one principle of community-based land conservation. Furthermore, great cities have great parks. These parks are the gathering places for cultural events, farmers’ markets, recreation and also brings communities together. Providing wonderful park system is just as much an ethical issue as providing quality education and mobility for all citizens. I came to agreement on this issue of recycling land to get a fairer balance. In principle two, individual health is directly tied to how we shape our cities and communities. I can as a result of this say, to avoid ‘chronic diseases’ we should construct better patterns for our new developments in the urban, which will create sidewalks and bike paths. It is true to say that our growth patterns are affecting the water quality, the water that we consume to our bodies, becoming a major threat to our health. The squeezed patterns lead to traffics which of course, pollutes our air from the car emissions. It is the same air we breathe. Therefore, our health is at risk. Protecting our farms and natural lands helps to protect our community character and keeps traditional landscapes from fragmentation. That makes a community physically fit, as it a healthy economy. The Who

...a fan of The Who. Therefore, I was rather excited when I was assigned a research paper on The Who; a band who I really knew nothing about before American Popular Music. In the following paper, I will provide details about The Who’s individual band members’ lives, as well as information in relation to the band in general. The Who had four main members: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. In addition to being the band’s guitarist, Pete Townshend took on the roll as the primary song writer. The most interesting fact I found about Townshend, is that he owns his own book publishing company. He actually published a book of his own called “Horse’s Neck” which consisted of a variety of short stories. Townshend has maintained a musical interest throughout his life, even after The Who broke up in 1983 (The Who Official Band Website). Roger Daltrey has always been a passionate musician; to the point where he even designed many of the bands guitars (The Who Official Band Website). Recently, Daltrey’s passion for music resurfaced. According to Mayer Nissim, a reporter for Digital Spy, “Roger Daltrey has confirmed that he is to tour The Who's 1969 album Tommy in full.” This article is from April 27th, 2011. Through further research, I found that the band had joined again in 2006 and released their first album in twenty-four years (The Who Official Band Website). The upcoming tour will be made up of former band members Townshend and Daltrey, as well as five additional...

Changing Lanes

...Changing Lanes is a movie directed by Roger Michell and written by Chap Taylor and Michael Tolkin. The film is about a young lawyer and a business man who shares a small automobile accident on F.D.R. Gavin Banek who is played by Ben Affleck who also acted in Armageddon leaves the scene of accident and drives off leaving Doyle Gibson played by Samuel Jackson on the F.D.R causing him to miss his court appointment which leaves him with a broken family. After watching the film Changing Lanes, I would recommend everyone to watch the film. I was amused by how well the characters have played their roles. The theme, which was suspense through, out the whole film. Also the setting of the movie that created the rightful atmosphere needed. With all these factors the movie was a definite entertainer, which would keep the audience seated from the beginning till the very end of the movie. The movie has many important factors but the most important of all would be the characters and how well they have played their roles. Gavin Banek, a young lawyer who is one of the main characters in the story and turns a road accident into a chaotic feud. Doyle Gibson is the other main character that opposes Gavin by taking counteractions for his actions. Both of these characters were involved in an accident and Gavin was in a rush to go to courts, so he drives off from the scene accident. From that moment on, both of their lives change lanes. Whether it could be Gavin cheating on his wife and taking...

Ms. Redare

...Now that you have selected the movie you want to review and watched it bearing in mind the evaluative criteria listed above, you are ready to begin writing your review. 1.Format Your review should have a title page specifying the title of the movie you are reviewing, your name, the names of your instructor and class, your student ID number, and the date you are submitting the review. The title page should be followed by the body of the review, which should be about 750 words long – about three double-spaced pages using a 12-point font. If you cite any sources, the full citations should appear in a separate References section at the end. Use the standard Chicago citation style (see http://library.osu.edu/sites/guides/chicagogd.php). 2.Story, Dialogue, Action! Movies tell stories, and so should your review. Dialogue and action bring stories to life, and you can increase your readers’ interest by quoting revealing snippets of dialogue and describing the action that takes place during important scenes. These narrative elements are especially effective when used in the introductory paragraphs because they help to engage the reader. Remember, though, that your job is not to tell the whole story of the movie but to focus on aspects of sociological relevance. Don’t let the movie’s narrative control you; use the movie to tell your sociological story. 3.Argument The main body of your review – all but the introductory and concluding paragraphs – should develop your sociological...
