...community programs such as NBA Cares, NFL PLAY 60, NFL Green Team, and A Crucial Catch. Unfortunately, major legal and ethical situations have arisen which adversely affect each league in different ways. This paper details such social responsibility efforts mentioned above, as well as others, and aims to present the ethical and legal issues surrounding former Baltimore Ravens running-back, Ray Rice, and former Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling. NFL Issues: Over the years, many professional athletes have had legal issues. Some have been banned from professional sports, while others went to jail or got away with murder. At some point, however, a business needs to consider ethics. Even though it may not be the best financial decision, doing what is right is paramount. On February 15, 2014, at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, pro-bowl running-back, Ray Rice, was arrested with his fiancée, Janay, on simple assault charges. On February 19th, a video emerged of Rice dragging his unconscious fiancée out of an elevator by her shoulders. The Ravens’ organization was quick to defend Rice, affirming that he is a man of good character. Rice married Janay Palmer on March 28th, just one day “after being indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury for third-degree aggravated assault”. He later pleaded not guilty to the charge and was admitted into a diversionary program. On May 23rd, the Ravens held a press conference, and for the first time since the...

...also known as, “NCAA” provides allowance for expenses pertaining to travel and equipment. Therefore, further compensation seems irrelevant or let’s say redundant,” Is it”? Or maybe a five hundred to one thousand dollar a month cut to each player is the answer; they are generating large amounts of income for someone. This sounds like a job to me. For decades the following conference: Southeastern Conference, Pac 10, Big Ten, Atlantic coast, Big East, and Big 12, have been big TV deals for ESPN, CBS, NBC, and Fox sports networks. These networks provide millions of dollar in revenue to the schools each year, to broadcast there game. On top of the TV networks, many of the conferences have their own TV networks. The conference provides the cable company with exclusive gaming, that customer pay for per event. This fills the pockets of the coaches and the conference, leaves little incentives for the players and their families. The NCAA is the organization that governs and set the rules for the college athletics. NCAA is made of three divisions, division one being the largest schools the top ten the money makers. Division two and three consist of the smaller...

...Roberts bid successfully for cable franchises in Philadelphia. After this success he decided to expand the company’s operations further and in 1972 they took the company public due to the stagnation of subscriber rates. Comcast decided to move into the telephone business in 1988 when they purchased Amcell, this was the first time a cable company was able to offer their customers telephone service from another source other than the telephone providers. Ralph Roberts named his son, Brian L. Roberts to be the next president of the company which took everyone by surprise but he turned out to be a very efficient manager. In the mid-1990s there was an increase in activity for the cable and telecommunications industries due to deregulation which brought the cable and telephone companies into competition with one another, an increase of mergers and acquisitions were seen since many companies wanted to build more efficient networks. Microsoft Corporation decided to invest one billion dollars into Comcast so they would have a cable partner that could test “ interactive television and high-speed computer services,” (Funding Universe) they decided to choose Comcast due to them having the most advanced cable systems in the country at the time. Around the same time Microsoft invested, Comcast converted to a new fiber-coaxial technology which in turn made it more efficient by improving its reliability and the overall signal quality. Comcast went to being solely a cable company to a giant in the...

...the extraordinary costs that are required by tax payers to maintain the system. Another concern is the long wait times required by patients due to the ease of access to healthcare. I have some suggestions to not only save money, but also to reduce wait times. My first suggestion is to increase the budget for homecare and senior care. Senior citizens make up a very large portion of healthcare patients. Increasing financial support of homecare could reduce the number of hospitalized seniors by providing in home support in the form of Personal Support Workers, Registered Practical Nurse’s, Registered Nurse’s and visiting doctors. The average cost of a hospitalization for one day is $7,000. By providing visiting nursing/ doctors we could reduce that cost to $25-$500 per day depending on the care needed. A second suggestion would be to introduce the very much debated 2-tier system (allowing private hospitals, in addition to the public hospitals currently in place). By introducing this system, all patients would benefit. Patients with the financial means, or benefits have the option to seek out private care, reducing the wait times and costs. Another key concern is the growing costs of social welfare systems, like Ontario Works, Unemployment Insurance, and Disability Programs. My suggestion to help relieve the pressure caused by the enormous cost of these programs is to change the overall goal of the...

... Ramsey commented; “Wow, you know, you can pause live television – isn’t that a cool thing?” (J. David Hunger, 2012) This idea is appealing to consumers because it gives the average TV viewer the ability to watch what they want at their own leisure, more control for viewers. Strategic Posture Their mission for the company is to “redefine home entertainment by providing consumers with an easy and intuitive way to record, watch, and control television and receive videos, pictures, and movies from cable, broadcast, and broadband sources.” (TiVo Strategic-Paper)The objectives planned out by Ramsey and Barton were to create a home network-based multimedia server in which content to “thin” clients would be streamed throughout the home. Also other characteristics that were important to the founders were: flawless operations, reliability, and the ability to handle power failure gracefully. The best marketing strategy used by TiVo was word of mouth, when the product was first created the company started by sending famous celebrities, such as Oprah, TiVo boxes. These celebrity testimonies, paired with...

...Television and Media Violence – Affect on Children Exposure to Violent Television Causes Aggressive Behavior in Children Prepared for Mrs. Martha Jagel, Professor Rogers State University Prepared by Ashton Duncan, Student Rogers State University June 20th 2013 Television is the most powerful medium the world has ever seen. Never before has it been possible to communicate and so strongly influence millions of people at the same moment right in their own homes. But its misuse has been felonious, and society is paying an increasing price (Langone, 1984). Almost weekly the press carries some story about the harmful effects of television on children. Parent-teacher lobbyists wring their hands about the violence depicted on Saturday morning children''s programs. Nutritionists decry commercials that tout sugar-laden junk food to youngsters. Consumer advocates clamor against the deceptive marketing of children's toys. In Washington, D. C., politicians anxiously express their regrets, then turn to more pressing business (Landesman, 1995). This paper intends to address the behavioral effects that violent television has on children. Violence and television has been the subject of numerous controversial studies for the past thirty years. The most persistent questions have concerned aggressive, anti-social, or delinquent behavior and their link, if any, to violent television entertainment (Paik & Comstock, 1994). Numerous articles, written on almost...
