The health care manager has many roles and functions that must be implemented to assure the smooth running of an organization. There are four functions that health care managers use: Organizing, Planning, Controlling, and Leading. Of the four functions, I believe leading to be the most important role or function of the health care manager. The function of leading is important in keeping the organization maintained because without good leadership, the morale of employees can drop which can lead to goals not being met. Lombardi & Schermehorn (2007) states, “Leading is the process of arousing people’s enthusiasm to work hard to fulfill plans and accomplish objectives” (p. 9). Therefore it will take a manager who has excellent leadership skills to invoke employees to want to do a job well done. A strong leader will understand that not every employee is the same, that there will be criticism, and that some employees will need an extra push in order to meet the goals of the team. Moreover, a strong manager is assertive, confident, has good listening skills and able to make quick decisions based on everyday changes and in emergencies. Finally, a good manager will give their employees the tools needed to succeed. Managers should provide employees with the necessary equipment, knowledge, and resources in order to do the job, if not the job will not be completed properly (Burrese, 2010). The most significant aspect related to health care management that I want to gain by taking this class is leading and organization. Although I am a people person and believe I have what it takes to become a successful manager, I still need to get the education in knowing what exactly is expected of me as far as leadership skills. Additionally, I need to learn how to apply this skill as well
