Summary and Conclusions 14 References ............... 17 INTRODUCTION Women in sports have indeed come a long way. Years ago it was socially unacceptable for women to do anything other than cook and clean. Men dominated the work place and the sports industry. But eventually women got fed up with being treated less significant than their male counterparts and began protesting. Not until the mid-1950s and early 1960s did nondiscriminatory employment become a strong social concern (Bohlander & Snell, 2004). While women were just beginning to make a name for themselves, the government began regulating Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) by passing a series of laws, in an attempt to correct social problems of interest to particular groups of workers, including women. EEO laws have made a major impact on women in all industries, but especially on women in sports. While EEO laws focused on non-discrimination, affirmative action went beyond...

...1. The grounds on which Newhouse rests his claim, “The student athlete should serve as a beacon of education rather than as a blight,” can be found in the overwhelming examples of student athlete dedication, and commitment, to both academics and athletics. This is despite the derogatory environments they experience in a class. In addition to the exact same workload their non-athletic peers receive student athletes have the added stress of balancing their time between physically demanding training and competition. What’s interesting is the time and dedication the student athlete puts into raising the athletic profile of the college or university, and in return their only request is to be treated and seen as equals in the classroom. At a stadium or arena, the student athlete is seen in the highest regards, proudly...

...coaches (18.6 percent through the 2011-12 season) is at its lowest mark since the 1995-96 season, people weren't sure what, if anything, they should say. Multiple administrators passed on the opportunity. The NCAA wanted to see my questions, and then it wanted a pre-interview phone conversation before it ultimately emailed its responses. The coaches who talked on the record always ended our chats with the same concern: "I didn't say anything that will make me look bad, right?" Shaka Smart Andy Lyons/Getty Images To reach Shaka Smart's level, black coaches often have to overcome certain labels. I don't blame them. It's an incendiary issue, because we're uncomfortable with race as dialogue. It's still a subject that makes athletic directors -- 89 percent of whom are white at the Division I level, per the report -- squirm. Minority coaches speak cautiously, because they don't want to be labeled as rebels or militants. That hesitancy is a significant component in a perennial problem that's often managed but rarely attacked. An inherent defensiveness makes the subject difficult to publicly dissect. So year after year, the issue remains. The numbers aren't too surprising, but they're worth addressing, especially when the coaching pool belies the fact that 57.2 percent of Division I men's basketball players are...

In 2010 allegations of sexual harassment were made by and against members within the eminent marching band at Ohio State University. The investigation was open until July of 2014 when the director of the university’s band was fired after issuing a report stating that he had chaperoned a culture of prevalent harassment. ...Background: About NIKE, Inc. It started with a handshake between two visionary Oregonians - Bowerman and his University of Oregon runner Phil Knight. They and the people they hired evolved and grew the company that became Nike from a U.S.-based footwear distributor to a global marketer of athletic footwear, apparel and equipment that is unrivaled in the world. When Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman made this observation many years ago, he was defining how he viewed the endless possibilities for human potential in sports. He set the tone and direction for a young company created in 1972, called Nike, and today those same words inspire a new generation of Nike employees. Our goal is to carry on his legacy of innovative thinking, whether to develop products that help athletes of every level of ability reach their potential, or to create business opportunities that set Nike apart from the competition and provide value for our shareholders. ...one to be able to further their education, with a reduced tuition, while playing a beloved sport. Does it get any better? Some think yes, and some think compensation should be required. However, I disagree. For many years now, one of the most popular debates in sports has been whether or not student athletes should get a share of the revenue they generate for the university in which they are attending and participating in college athletics. If college student athletes were to begin receiving compensation, it would cause universities to prioritize the more market-value sports over the non-revenue-generating sports, cause disputes due to unfairness of the more profitable programs being able to recruit the best athletes, and propose many...

...Potential Careers in Sports Management Esther Cole University of Incarnate Word This is my very first course in sports management and I have learned that there are many paths I could take once I graduate. Right now it is too early to feel passionate about any one career path. I will discuss various careers in sports management and I how feel about them now as I am just starting out. I hope to look back at this paper when I am finished and see if my views and opinions have changed. The Number of students who decide to get a MBA in sports management has grown significantly since the recession. A Ba in sports management was not producing jobs that many hopeful students thought it would. The sports industry was not immune to the recession like many people thought. Some people thought that the sports business would never feel the effects of the recession but they were wrong. Both the NBA and the NFL cut jobs during the recession and this caused a ripple effect with new graduates. They were forced to take low paying jobs working in the industry but as ticket sellers or working in the concessions. Still others who felt there was no other option took unpaid internships in the hope of landing a job afterward (Belson, 2009). Sports management degrees date back to the 1970’s with a rocky start. The degree was not seen as legitimate, “many academics mocked them for teaching how to mix Gatorade” (Wecker, 2011). The program has come a long way and has advanced into a masters level and...

...Delphine Hanna Ms. Hanna was a pioneer in organized physical education. She became the first instructor in Physical Education at Oberlin College (Ohio) in 1885. At that time, she began teaching the future faculty in Physical Education. Ms. Hanna received her medical degree in 1890 from the University of Michigan. This became a major compartment to the scientific basis of her physical programs. She established the first four-year curriculum for a Bachelor’s degree in physical education for women. In 1903, Ms. Hanna was made Professor of Physical Education at Oberlin, the first professorship in physical education in the United States. In search of answers concerning physical training, she learned of Dr. Dudley Sargent of Harvard who had interested a benefactor in making a generous gift to erect a well-equipped gymnasium. The testing, the courses, the activities were an innovation on a college campus. He was willing to conduct classes for women teachers in areas of anatomy, physiology, and the theory of exercise. Along with twelve other women, Ms. Hanna enrolled. She also investigated the newly developing orthopedic center in Boston to study diagnostic and corrective prescriptions for spinal deviations. She became convinced that a regimen of exercise was essential to well being, but must be based on scientific principles. She found a small college that held an open mind toward the experimentation of newer educational theories that welcomed her enthusiasm. ...
