...A Roller Coaster to die for Roller Coaster Design By: Dannielle Franco and Aeriane Crisostomo (Grade 10 – Honesty) Let’s face it, making a roller coaster design is not easy. You can not just make one without considering facts. Great roller coaster designs needs ‘The Brains’ not just imagination and your hunger for excitement. Now, let’s talk about “the Brain” that makes this awesome structure come alive! In making roller coaster designs, we need a concrete idea of what we are doing. We need polynomial functions. I know you might say, “What does a polynomial function got to do with a roller coaster?!” the answer is simple. Polynomial functions can be graphed that will resemble a perfect roller coaster. With its turning points and death-defying heights when put into structure, our polynomial function can turn into a roller coaster that will take your breath away. How do we do it? Here’s how.... Function: P(x) = x6 – 7x5 + 7x4 + 35x3 – 56x2 – 28x +48 First we need a polynomial function that we can graph into a roller coaster to die for. A. End Behavior The leading coeffiecient is positive and its degree is even, so the graph rises to the left and to the right. B. Turning Points: N – 1 = number of turning points N represents the highest degree 6 – 1 = 5 turning points We also need to know the end behavior of our roller coaster and the number of its turning points. C. Zeroes ...

... Jones 1 History of Roller Coasters! ! Have you ever wondered who invented the roller coaster. Or what the first roller coaster looked like? The roller coaster started with a simple idea and grew to become one of modern worlds most renowned park rides. The first kinds of roller coasters and how modern-day roller coasters differ from the roller coasters in medieval times.! Davis Bowers states in his research that, “Roller coasters can trace their origins back to the Russian ice slides”. He continues on to explain that the Russians were the original inventors of the roller coaster with large man-made ice hills. The rider would have to sit in a sled that was made out of wood or ice (ice being the most common). The problem with these sleds was that the driver needed to be somewhat experienced so that the sled didn't run off the hill. These rides were most commonly seen at fairs located across the Russian country side. “While these slides grew in popularity in Russia, a French businessman, decided to build an Ice Slide in France” (Bowers). Unfortunately for the Frenchmen the climate in France was not suited for this type of structure, however this did not deter him and he strived to build something that was better suited for any climate. The Frenchmen used a wax wooden slope and hills to replicate the Russian design and used wooden sleds with rollers on the bottom(Bowers). ! ! As we continue forward in history, there were many different roller coasters being built at the time...

...Roller coasters have come a long way from ¨monumental ice slides¨ in the 16th and 17th century to an actual steel cart with wheels today. As we go on we will discuss the history of roller coasters, the physics behind them, and the authors experience in the making of its own roller coaster. The history of a roller coaster goes back a long time to the 16th and 17th century. The first roller coaster started as a ice slides which eventually developed in to rolling carts. Then as time went two of the first roller coasters were created, one being in the Russian MT of Belleville created as ¨a train attached to a track¨ and second the first American made roller coaster which was originally made to send coal but was then remade into a more scenic tour.It was called ¨Mauch Chunk Switchway railway.¨As time went soon the roller coasters were made into wood an so on developed. Roller coaster use two main things in order to finish the ride, known as inertia and gravity. As the roller coaster goes up the track and eventually gets to the peak of the roller coaster gravity soon pulls it down the track it causes the roller coaster to change its energy. The roller coaster soon goes from having potential energy to kinetic. But since...

...A roller coaster works by having an engine that makes it go up the hill. When it goes down the hill (slope) the engine turns off and gravity brings it down. The momentum from the drop takes it around the entire roller coaster, which can be filled with spirals and possibly more slopes. The fastest roller coaster can travel up to 150mph. The average roller coaster can go up to 128 mph. which means that the fastest roller coaster probably has a higher drop. The highest roller coaster in the world is 456 ft. Roller coasters are fun for kids all over the world because they are so fun.A roller coaster is an amusement park ride where people sit in a series of seats with wheels that are on tracks that has an engine. A series of clamps at the end of...

...Mathematics in Rollercoasters There are several different types of math used in building and creating roller coasters. Some of them are: angles, heights, velocity, slope, gravity, rotation, and more. Below, I will be explaining some of the equations and mathematical ways of figuring them out. First there are angles, which is “the space measured in degrees between two intersecting lines or surfaces at or close to the point where they meet.” To figure them out, the engineers use machines, models, and test coasters to come up with the perfect angles. They need to make sure the measurements and angles work right before they can go back to designing the actual coaster. Roller-coasters do not have engines, but they are controlled almost completely by the angles and velocity it reaches after the first big drop goes down. Heights are “something figured out by measuring from the base to the top. Specifically, for the roller-coaster, the engineer usually measures the highest point of the coaster, from the ground to the top of it. Next, is speed or velocity, which is “the speed of something in...

...Roller Coasters are fun and scary rides, but to make them that way it takes work. The first decide what kind of roller coaster is it going to be like for what age and see for little kids they might do a little hill, but for older kids they might want it to be fun a large hills and making them go upside down. After that then they have to make another decision if they want to use steel or wood if they use steel then it might use thin style structure and a thick support. But most people say steel ones are the most hard or confusing ride to make. But the wooden ones mainly use southern pine for structure or others that are strong and good supporters steel then come in, but only for the plate of the roller coaster. But if you think that's not...

...In any amusement park, the roller coaster is usually the most popular ride. It was first built in Russia during the 16th century, ever since then, the roller coaster has been a hit. With the car slowly moving up the everlasting height of the hill, high enough to touch the clouds, and then rushing downwards through many loops and twists, is enough to keep one’s adrenaline pumping. But what is the secret of the roller coaster? How is it possible for it to work this way? The answer is science. Many may not know, but science, specifically physics, has a lot to do with roller coasters. The roller coaster is actually powered by many types of energy: mechanical, potential, and kinetic. Mechanical energy is ‘the energy acquired by the objects upon which work is done.’ (Definition of Mechanical Energy). Potential energy is ‘energy possessed by an object because of its height above the ground’ (Definition of Potential Energy). Kinetic energy is ‘the energy of motion’ (Definition of Kinetic Energy)....

...Roller Coasters are not self propelled they are pulled up by a chain or cable along the hill to the first peak of the roller coaster track. When the roller coaster stops it gathers tons of potential energy. When the car races down the track it produces kinetic energy. they also have a lever that lifts the car down the track, but the main thing that helps the car go down the track is Gravity. Gravity is the force that attracts something toward the center of the Earth. The oldest roller coasters originated from Russian, which were constructed out of hills of ice. The drop was 50 feet. Later on Most roller coasters were built with wood. In 1959 the first steel track roller coaster was built at Walt Disney World. A big...

...Roller coasters are the bomb, right? Almost everyone enjoys going to an amusement park and playing all day, but some people do not know the danger of roller coasters. Roller coasters are the cause of some deaths and severe injuries. In one year, there are about 350 injuries on roller coasters. That is like almost one every day of the year! Now, it is much rarer since the safety and technology are more advanced, but there is always a slight risk. Inspectors have noticed that most injuries or deaths are from a roller coaster that was over twenty years old. There was only one coaster that was built in the last decade. As most people can see, amusement parks are fun, but can also be life threatening. From 1987 to 1999, there were forty-two death...

...draft 2 I was waiting in line for the biggest roller coaster I have ever seen. My body was shaking, I was so scared. We walked up the stairs it felt like we waited in line for hours. Finally it was our turn, we quickly got on the ride and my hands dug in the handle bars. The roller coaster was going up and up and I hear click click click. My feet were straight up as my back was pushing against the chair. The roller coaster went straight down and I screamed as loud as I could. I squeezed my dad's hand. The roller coaster flipped upside down and did loopty loops and we got to the top. I heard people screaming and I smelled the cotton candy that was just made I could taste the popcorn. Then all of that went away it went straight down....

...Every time when I get sick and got the wind knocked out of me I remember the first time that I went on a roller coaster. It was a humid and muggy day at the end of the spring and in the beginning of summer. The were hoards of people all over the place and the smell of popcorn filled the air. The normal person would be excited but not me because today I would have to face my fear of going on a roller coaster. My fears of heights and being held upside down did not make a good combination when it came for confidence of going on a roller coaster. As my friends and I walk around my park one of them says how they want to go on the roller coaster. I quickly deflect this and I point to another ride and say maybe we should work our way up. Thankfully my friends agree and we walk to the smaller ride. The smaller ride was over almost as soon as we got on and all of a sudden I found myself walking with my friends to the larger ride. Out of desperation I point to another ride hoping they will agree but they denine saying that we aren’t staying here all day and that we should go on the cool rides. My heart sank deep in my chest. I wanted to tell my friends desperately that I didn’t want to go on the roller coaster but I don't want people to think I was scared of going on the roller coaster....

...In my lifetime, I've always loved to go on rides. Whether it's from amusement parks to rides in the mall I just loved them. Lots of people get scared or terrified about going on one but it never bothered me about going. I've had some of my best memories spent with roller coasters. But, there came a day when I found out about Kingda ka. Never in my life have I went on a ride like that one. Never in my life have I been this scared to go on a ride. I'm not gonna lie, I was so scared. It's such a high roller coaster and I dared myself to go on it with my dad. This ride has a max speed of 128mph and a height of 456’. I knew that I wasn’t the only one scared to go on the ride. I looked at my dad and he was perfectly fine. I was trying to make him...

...I shakingly journeyed towards it, my body already shaking out of fear and yet the excitement was still there. We were going to have fun , I was sure of it. The line wasn’t as long as it could have been, it was night so everyone was leaving to go home, but we were going to ride this one last ride.We got in line, filling in all the empty space between us and where the line began. This will be awesome, I thought, one of the best roller coasters in the world is 30 minutes away. It was only about ten minutes later when I was really scared, “dad, i’m really scared.” “Don’t worry bud, I’ll be right next to you.” We finally arrived at the sendoff station, but by now I was so scared I was shaking like an earthquake. “Dad, I don’t know about this,”...

...I looked trying to feel secure with my new surroundings. My friends and I were debating on which roller coaster to ride on. I voted for the least scary one, however, majority rules and everyone voted on riding The Vortex. While standing in the long line, my anxiety for riding a roller coaster for the first time felt like fire. Biting the inside of my cheeks hoping my friends wouldn't notice how frightened I was feeling. While the line moved forwards, I knew that the inevitable was about to come. My palms began sweating when we reached the front of the line. Luckily we had to wait for the cart to come back because it was full. While waiting, the constant heartbeat inside my ears felt like listening to spastic drumline. Unconsciously, I began...

...The Insane Roller Coaster Have you ever chose something horrible, or you did something you will NEVER do again? Because… unfortunately something really bad happened to me. First I was at Six Flags with my mom and dad and it was getting dark but I was super excited! I saw all these thrilling rides and I was so ready to ride them. But then 5 mins things started to get bad. Before I get into things let’s start from the top. I was walking with my parents looking for which one to ride first. It was so hard to choose which one to go on because they all looked so fun, it would take one million years to choose. Finally i chose one. “So you want to go on that one,” questioned my dad? “Yeah that one,” I ushered. “Alright let’s do it,” my dad gladly...
