Roman Entertainment

The underlying purpose of entertainment varies across societies, and at times the attitude a society takes towards its entertainment reveals its values just as much as the actual forms of entertainment do. This was certainly the case with the ancient Greeks and Romans but, as we will briefly discuss, this also holds true today.
As mentioned in the module, the Greeks aspired to represent their philosophical ideals in all aspects of life, including entertainment. However, when the Romans conquered the Greeks and began to assimilate aspects of Greek culture into Roman society, many of these ideals were cast aside. Although the Greeks were proud of their culture, they also contemplated questions about humanity as a whole. In contrast, the main focus in Roman society was pride in the emperor, the gods, and the identity of the empire itself. Deep philosophical questions were ignored by the lay public, and Greek forms of entertainment were transformed into …show more content…
Christians today find themselves in a similar position. Although real life-or-death sporting events are illegal, American society still glorifies violence through fictional television shows and gruesome images in newscasts. In addition, just as Roman theater elevated slapstick humor and coarse plotlines, most American entertainment lacks moral significance. Christian parents need to address these issues with their children. One way parents can do this is by helping children choose and evaluate entertainment in light of Biblical values. For example, the car ride home from a movie is an excellent opportunity to reflect on the morals promoted by the characters and to compare those values with Scripture. Parents should also explain the difference between entertainment that encourages godly behavior and amusement that is merely intended to relax the

...have taken a lot from the Romans, but the main thing that we have gotten from them is their structure of the buildings used for entertainment. They used coliseums for the use of amusing the town people. They would hold gladiator shows, or fights till the death as well as chariot races and killing fugitives for the use of others amusement. Another thing that they used the buildings for where; dinner theater shows for the upper class and emperors and empresses. The structure of these buildings where really important because they had to hold a lot of people due to the fact of that was usually the only means of entertainment. The building that I chose that I feel as though portrayed this is the first mariner arena. The first mariner arena is built as if it was a coliseum but in particular the pantheon; and it is used to host plays as well as the circus and other forms of entertainment in Baltimore. Although it does use arches the inside of the building uses the same structure which is kind the bowl shape. I feel as though they use this shape to fit as many people inside as possible. Another thing that I have noticed the structure for the hallways or tunnels used for the entertainment to enter in has not changed much either. Also whoever the entertainment is for that particular event is usually put in the center of the arena or coliseum so that everyone can see even if you are sitting up high. So in conclusion a lot of our buildings used for entertainment where derived from...

...important human activity which benefits a person not only the physical but also a person’s well being. The “need to do something for recreation” seems to be an essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be “fun” the term “recreation” implies participation to have a healthy and refreshing mind and body. It is also very entertaining. Active and healthy recreation is already practice before. One example is the era of Romans. The Romans had the coliseum, where they watched chariot races and other entertainment. The Greeks had amphitheaters where they viewed drama and comedy. Others invented the Olympics, one of the greatest entertainment sport spectacles in the world. Even the bible discusses singing, dancing, music, and other forms of acceptable recreation, so even the most ancient civilizations enjoyed entertainment and recreation of some sort. Aristotle said that happiness result from being the best we can be. The sort of happiness that Aristotle was thinking should not be equated with simple pleasure. Amusing ourselves can be pleasant, but he says it is childish. Amusement for sheer pleasure degrades rather than improves us. Aristotle admits that amusement is helpful because it refreshes us from work. But amusement is never as good as true leisure, which provides a life of deep fulfillment rather than fleeting bodily pleasures. Aristotle...

A Social Melting Pot

...Personally, Duke Basketball is not a team I would cheer for. I am from St. Louis, Missouri. I study and live at Mizzou as a freshman. Teams I would cheer for would be St. Louis teams like the Rams, the Cardinals, and the Blues. Since I go to Mizzou, I would also cheer for Mizzou teams, whatever the sport. Places like gyms, stadiums, fields, and courts gather people together. The gym everyone is gathered in (like the one in the picture) is a place where diversity can exist, and nobody questions it. Individuals come to meet friends, family, even strangers to become one fan base for their favorite team. No matter what differences these people have, they still manage to bond because of this one similarity. Everyone cheers for the same team, unless you’re in the wrong section of seats. This group, and any other large group of fans, represents a melting pot of people with different ethnicities, sexes, cultures, and/or religions. This picture of Duke fans gave me an appreciation for my hometown and the fact that so many of my friends and I love sports. It reminded me of the connection people feel when they are together, as one, cheering. Going to the baseball stadium, football dome, or ice rink, with my friends helped me grow closer to them. Through the excitement of everyone in the picture, the unity of school colors on each individual, and the diversity of sex and race, it can be determined that Duke's basketball team serves as some kind of social captivator for Duke fans, who are...

Twelfth Night

...the year 1601.it is also likely that it was first presented before queen Elizabeth I in a great hall of her palace of Whitchali ,just outside London. the play would suit such an occasion since it’s a delightful ,lighthearted comedy ,full of love and laughter ,and with only a cloud or two to pass across the happy sunshine. But what about the social background of the play? For many centuries Christian communities have celebrated the feast of Epiphany-the time when the infant Jesus was first presented to the Magi (wise men) twelve days after his birth on Christmas day .in Shakespeare’s time; this whole period from 25th December to 6th January was given over to ‘Yuletide revels’-a time of feasting and celebration which probably dates back to Roman Satumalin. During this extended partying, it was traditional to play tricks on people, and it was understood that, for a while the usual master-servant relationship were turned on their heads. Twelfth Night was a period of carnival in which typically: a. People might give away to bodily pleasures of all kinds (drinking too much, indulging in sex, over eating and many more). b. Language itself seemed to run riot (with jokes, nonsense and wit). c. The traditional hierarchies (the lord and lady ‘at the top’ and the servants in various ranks beneath them) were temporarily overthrown. Twelfth Night itself marked the end of these festivities and was therefore a signal that the ‘misrule’ was over and the traditional hierarchies would once again...

Mass Media

...Evelyn Widjaja Ms. Webster Expository Composition Period 2 7 April 2011 Mass Media The concept of media has expanded throughout society, whether to being on the newspaper, television, radio and the internet (Robyn 1). The main purpose of mass media in our society is to provide information, entertainment and advertisement (http://saching.com/Article/The-Positive-and-Negative-Effects-of-Media/873). I will discuss the influence that mass media has for the public and some evidence that will help support the statement “People are more influenced by mass media that they think” (Alexander & Janice 1). Technology has attracted people to engage in mass media, it has brought out easy ways of communication and provided us to make contact with people from different places (Robson 1). Mass media does not corrupt us but it gives the information clearly and steadily (Robyn 1). We need to add to these different types of media as in a way that can help us in life ( Levine 9). Our everyday style is showered with advertisement, more like information and other sorts of different type of mass media (Robyn 2). For instance the newspaper is an incredible influence tool in the society, they can easily turn on people emotions in favor or against an issue sometimes (Robyn 2). This is because we as readers tend to believe everything that is written in the newspaper even though it might be the wrong information (Robyn 2). Due to the technological purposes, we have achieved a step where...

...carrying guns in school, increasing the possibility of someone being shot. The appetite effect shows that children exposed to a lot of media violence would want to see more of this kind of media. Simply put, the more one watches, the more wants to watch. While bystander effect explains that children who watched too much violent entertainment habituate to gradually increasing, amounts of violence, in other words they are becoming more callous, desensitized, and less sympathetic to the victims of violence, whether in media or in real life. And last, children who have aggressor effect shows that children tend to become more violent, meaner and more aggressive once they are exposed to a lot of media violence. In general, males get more affected in the, appetite, bystander and the aggressor effect while females get more affected in the victim effect only. But the author said that it is still unclear how to exactly predict any given individual will be affected by any given media violence presentation. Boniol, 1998, the increase of rape cases of children and harassment in the streets of India are one of the results of media violence. Major sources of entertainment in India are films, and television programs....

Product Placements in Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” Music Video

...brands, including Virgin Mobile, Monster Heartbeats by Lady Gaga headphones, Hewlett Packard laptop, Polaroid, Diet Coke, Wonder Bread, Miracle Whip, and dating site PlentyOfFish.com. Although the frequency of product placement in this music video has been to a ridiculous level, the way that brands listed above are inserted into each scene is quite coherent. For example, Gaga steals the Virgin cellphone to contact Beyoncé to bail her out of jail. Food brands like Miracle Whip and Wonder Bread feature in the kitchen scene. The production placement in “Telephone” is interesting and worth studying since it shows viewers that the boundaries between entertainment and advertising have been blurred because of pop culture phenomena and that these two industries’ purposes are getting intertwined. “Telephone” represents the anxiety of entertainment industry about costs to make videos and promotions, which hence causes the artists to...

The Road Analysis

...Response to “The Road” In our class for our final, we watched the Movie “The Road” after reading the novel in class. Most of the times a film version of a book is either a hit or miss with the audience. A lot of times readers think the film spoils the image they had created in their mind while reading, but other times the film will exceed your expectations and be very good. In this essay I will explain whether or not I liked the film, what parts I thought were very similar to the book, and which parts helped me understand the story more clearly. First of all, I liked the film version of “The Road” a lot better than I liked the novel. The film was much easier to follow. While reading the book, I found it hard to follow along because of the unique writing style that McCarthy used. This style made it hard for me to focus, and made me become easily distracted. The film version, however, was much better. It was filmed in a traditional manner, which made it much easier to follow along. The main difference I saw was the language usage. In the novel, the man and the boy talked in weird, abrupt sentences. This was one of the main reasons it was hard to follow. In the film, they spoke in more normal English, and that made it easier to follow along, and kept my attention better than the book did. The film also did a very good job of showing the action sequences. While the film could have been filmed in a boring manner, they did a good job of bringing the story to life and producing...

Will this proposed regulation affect you or the business in which you are working? If so, how? The Georgia Department of Regulation- I goes to the casinos with friends occasional and I one of my friend owns few gas stations that have coin-operated amusement machines. This is affecting my friend due to the fact Department of Revenue is refusing to issue businesses licensed for the operation of coin-operated amusement machines in his place of business. 2. Describe the proposal/change. (10 points) The proposed regulation would authorize all gas stations the ability to apply for amusement and entertainment license while looking for more ways to gain revenue. With the state looking to bring three casinos here that would bring nearly $1 billion by 2014. Independent small business should have that opportunity as well. 3. Write the public comment that you would submit to this proposal. If the proposed regulation deadline has already passed, write the comment you would have submitted.
