There are a lot of similarities between these two ill-fated couples, the first being that they are in fact ill-fated. That means that both of their romances end badly, either in the death of their bodies or souls.
A second similarity is that their loves were forms of rebellion, forbidden in their society at the time. They had to meet in secret, love in secret, and fear discovery at the hands of those who forbade their relationships.
A third similarity is that their initial attraction was mostly physical; Romeo is struck with Juliet's beauty and thinks he is in love. Later, they build on that initial attraction and form a more solid and mature connection. It is the same with Winston and Julia; their first real meeting involves merely a physical encounter; later, they establish an emotional and mental connection.
Differences between these two relationships are that in the case of Winston and Julia, they betray each other and their love in the end; Romeo and Juliet did not, staying true through death. In Romeo and Juliet it was their families who disagreed with the match; with Winston and Juliet it was the government. Romeo and Juliet are much, much younger, young teenagers. Then, Romeo and Juliet's love forged a bond between warring families; the example of their love for each other was so powerful that it changed hearts and lives of many, many people. This is not hte case with Winston and Julia; their story ends more sadly, even though they do not die. Even love wasn't powerful enough to overcome the all-powerful Party; their love for themselves and their own survival trumped their love for each other. Society was not changed by them at all.
I hope those thoughts helped; good luck!

1984 and Romeo and Juliet

...Shakespeare and Orwell present forbidden love in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘1984’. Introduction What is love? What are the main similarities and differences between the presentation of forbidden love in 1984 and Romeo and Juliet? Relate briefly to the contexts of both texts. Paragraph 1 Why does Romeo love Juliet? Why does Winston love Julia? Look at how Romeo is attracted to Juliet for being beautiful and compare it to how Winston loves Julia for her lack of purity. Explore this idea. You could use the quotes: ‘The brightness of cheek would shame those stars’ – Romeo about Juliet, page 53, Romeo and Juliet “Listen. The more men you’ve had, the more I love you. Do you understand?” “Yes, perfectly.” “I hate purity, I hate goodness! I don’t want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” – Winston and Julia, page 144, 1984 (part 2, chapter 2 end) Paragraph 2 What is the connection between hate and love? What similarities do you notice between the two texts? Look hatred has become an important element of each relationship. You could use the quotes: ‘My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself’ –Romeo, page 55, Romeo and Juliet “As soon as I saw you, I knew you were against them.” Julia says this about Winston, page 140, 1984. Paragraph 3 How is sex presented in both texts? Is sex a natural or unnatural act? Look at how sex is shown to be unnatural in 1984 – birds singing, etc. Effect is that the reader...

Romeo and Juliet + 1984

...Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early in the career of William Shakespeare about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original. Shakespeare's use of his poetic dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course...

Comparison Between 1984 and Romeo and Juliet

...One distinct difference between Winston and Julia, and Romeo and Juliet, is how they met and fell in love. Winston met Julia at his work and from the first time he saw her, he hated her. Winston even wanted to kill her once, because he believed she was a spy from the Thought Police. His anger quickly changed to love when she secretly handed him a note containing the message, "I love you." Upon receiving this note Winston became obsessed with Julia, constantly trying to find ways to meet with her and worrying that she would lose interest in him. After much careful planning, Winston and Julia were able to meet, yet only talked for less than a minute and in a very business like manner. Eventually they found ways to meet a couple times a week for a few hours each time. Romeo and Juliet, on the other hand, met at a party. Romeo was looking at the fish in an aquarium when he spotted Juliet on the other side. He was stunned by her amazing beauty and could not take his eyes of her. She eventually saw him through the aquarium and was very attracted to him. They both fell in love at first sight and were married soon after. One similarity both these couples share is that their love is forbidden. Winston was a married man, and even though he does not live with his wife, the Party would kill both Winston and Julia if they found out abut their love for one other. And even if Winston wasn't married, love and marriage is frowned upon by the Party, but is allowed in order for there to be...

Love or Rebellion: Explore How Shakespeare and Orwell Present Forbidden Love in Romeo and Juliet and 1984

...Both secreted their relationships, knowing that they wouldn’t get let off lightly if they were ever caught, the consequences of Winston and Julia was foreshadowed at the beginning of the book by Orwell constantly reminding us what it is that would happen if a comrade was to go against big brother. At the beginning, they would be the audience watching as the convicted recited his convictions, but at the end the end Winston turn came. Orwell displays selfishness in Winston as he ends up betraying Julia once their relationship was put to the test and he saw that his life had been threatened by O’Brien; if Winston was put in Romeos position, he probably would not have committed suicide for Julia. As the mask came towards him and time was mocking him, he wished Julia could be in his place instead of him, he could of wished for it just to stop, but as well as the thought of her being there he also ‘shouted frantically’ . To shout it frantically meant that there was no hesitation in this order and he added that he wouldn’t care if they wanted to ‘tear her face off’, so he knew that she would suffer because of her crime and for his too. This seems to be the transaction period at which Winston’s learns to believe and love in Big Brother, in saying this I believe that Winston had realised that all of his thoughts of defeating big brother was not worth him dying and he had already converted. After Julia had recovered, her glance at Winston was full of hatred and ‘dislike’, it is not clear...

England

...Social Stratification Classes and Castes. Class is the primary way in which people approach social stratification. The upper class (the landed gentry, the titled nobility, and members of the royal family) has roughly the same social position it has had since the nineteenth century, when the middle classes began to compete successfully with the landed interests for influence. However, the upper class lost official political influence (and credibility) in the twentieth century. The major change in England's social identity structure has been the shrinking number of workers in manufacturing and the increasing number of people who work in service industries. White-collar and other service workers have replaced blue-collar workers as England's economic backbone. Consequently, the middle class has increased in size and wealth, and home ownership has increased, while union membership has declined dramatically, along with the size of the traditional industrial working class. Most workers expect unemployment at some point in their careers, especially the unskilled and uneducated. In 1983, only 5 percent of non-manual workers were unemployed. In contrast, skilled manual workers experienced 12 percent and semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers 23 percent unemployment, and manual workers combined accounted for 84 percent of the unemployed. England is becoming a society of the included and the excluded. There has been a sharp rise in long-term unemployment. The nature of work in a fluid...
