The Tragedy Of a Maniac
(TS)In the play of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo exemplifies characteristics of a maniacal lover and this damages the relationship between him and Juliet ultimately leading to the downfall of their love. (CD)For instance, when Romeo threatens to kill himself after he learns that the Prince banishes him, he says "There is no world without Verona walls...Hence 'banishèd' is banished from the world/ And world's exile is death" (Shakespeare III.iii.1720). (CM)Without Juliet by his side, Romeo would go insane and become very desperate, one of the few traits of a maniacal lover. (CM)Once Romeo leaves Juliet, life would become instantly pointless. (CD)In addition, when Juliet marries Romeo at Friar Lawrence's cell, Romeo promises Juliet everything by saying "Ah, Juliet, if the measure of thy joy be heaped like mine, and that thy skill be more to blazon it, then sweeten with thy breath this neighbor air, and let rich music's tongue unfold the imagined happiness that both receive in either by this dear encounter" (Shakespeare II.vi.2429). (CM)All maniacal lovers share a characteristic in which the lover begins to imagine a future and serious commitment. (CM)Here, Romeo promises everything Juliet wants and asks her to express her love toward each other. (CD)Furthermore, during Capulet's party in which Romeo first saw Juliet, he rashly says "Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight/ for I ne'er saw true beauty till this night" (Shakespeare I.v.5960). (CM)Just like how a maniacal lover switches between different types of uncertain of what type attracts to him, Romeo instantly switches from loving Rosaline, to Juliet. (CM)Romeo clearly does not know what type of women attracts to him since he says he never saw anyone as beautiful as Juliet even though he insisted he loved Rosaline hours before.

Through his dynamic plot, Shakespeare is able to involve audiences in his stories. This play is no exception. Romeo and Juliet is an engaging play because of all the characters, the narrative techniques and the Theme. To start, Romeo is dramatic and twists the plot. “If I profane with my unworthiest hand this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.” (1.5.93). Review Essay on Romeo and Juliet

...Review essay on Romeo and Juliet On 27 April 2012, I watched Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. It was directed by Ivan Heng from W!LD RICE. It brought laughter and tears to me, from the witty scenes to the tragic parts. This version was an exciting, refreshing, contemporary twist of the classic love story. The set, costumes, music, sound and casting gave this play a whole new spin to it. I felt the casting was perfect. The main characters, Romeo, played by Hansel Tan and Juliet, played by Julie Wee, really brought out the deep emotions of their characters. Their chemistry was amazing and it wasn’t hard to imagine them as star-crossed teenage lovers. Romeo’s character was strong, with Hansel pulling of his intense feelings brilliantly, such as the part in Act 3, Scene 3 that starts with “Tis torture, and not mercy” when he talks about being banished. Juliet’s transformation from a wide-eyed girl into a self-assured, loyal, and capable woman was well portrayed throughout the play. One memorable character was Nurse, played by Neo Swee Lin. Though I felt she that at some points her Singaporean accent would emerge, it somehow worked to make the character funnier and she injected much humour into the piece with her frequently inappropriate remarks and speeches. Act two, Scene three, where she meets Romeo was especially funny when she kept going for Romeo’s chest. It was hilarious! Every scene kept the audience engaged, from the beautiful, intimate scene where Romeo lies...

...critics alike for centuries. It could be argued that his sonnets (166 and 130) and the play Romeo and Juliet best represents his exploration of strong feelings and of love. Romeo and Juliet is a love story written by Shakespeare, it is the most famous tragic love play. It is about “two star-crossed lovers” in different households both alike in dignity which is where the scene begins. At the beginning of the play, there’s a feud going on between the Capulet and Montague families. People involved in the feud have to defend their families and friends, even if that means bloodshed. The main thing is that Shakespeare was trying to describe an exotic place where the audience could believe a tragic love story might happen. Romeo and Juliet are about two households in Verona which is where the scene begins. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare presents love as a strong and passionate emotion. He generally links love and religion in his play. The prologue is a 14 line sonnet. This describes two families that are both ‘alike in dignity’ and live in Verona; this also tells us that from each household ‘a pair of star-cross’d’ lovers will appears. Their lives are taken to mend the hatred between their families. In Act 1 Scene V takes place at the Capulet’s party. Compare And Contrast Romeo And Juliet Essay

...Romeo and Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet’s story is not a story of true love. Why you ask? The following reasons apply; Romeo and Juliet said “I love you” on the first night they met. Also, they got married the next day, and they barely saw each other, how could they know it was love. Romeo could have turned out to be someone Juliet did not expect or the other way around. First and foremost, Romeo and Juliet said “I love you” on the first night they met. This could not be true because all true love takes time, they did not take anytime to get to know each other. Saying this could have just been out of excitement and an imagination of what their first love will be like. In that era they did not have a lot to do so some would have gotten very...

Romeo And Juliet Comparative Essay Outline

...Comparative Essay Outline Thesis Statement: In “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare demonstrates the concept that fate cannot be prevented, no matter what is said or done. Point 1: Fighting against fate is not worth the time, for whoever bothers will fail. Augustus seeks to control his own fate of death by not smoking, but even by trying to live vigorously, fate still won in the end. Proof from text #1: With a cigarette in his mouth, Augustus states, “You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing,” thinking he had a choice of how he would die, but his cancer was already killing him. Transition Sentence: Likewise, the Friar thought he could help the two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, be together. If...

Romeo and Juliet Critical Essay

...CATS Cats are clean and graceful animals requiring very little care. They instinctively clean themselves and do their "business" in dirt or cat litter before covering it up with their paws. It's a shame that cats get such bad publicity in the media and are considered dangerous animals in the view of most human beings. For example the saying that “these mean things will claw your eyes out” is really not true. Such a thing won't happen unless you corner a cat and/or it's afraid for its life. Each cat has their own personality, but most cats are very independent and can be very stubborn. (i.e. it's hard to train a cat to make it do what you want, like sit or roll over) They can also have a short temper, but will usually warn you before you really make them mad. After forming a bond of trust with the cat, they have nothing but love for an owner that treats them right. Cats are great at cuddling in bed, but If cuddling isn't your thing they will learn to give you your space and sleep at the foot of the bed or on a chair. Cats are very playful. They instinctively enjoy running around and catching things that move. Cats also will genuinely care about an owner they love. For example, if you leave the house/apartment they will worry that you left them, or if you or a loved one is crying they will often try to comfort you. It should also be noted that petting a cat is scientifically proven to lower blood pressure and stress. So go ahead, pet them all you want! They will...

Immaturity In Romeo And Juliet Essay

...into a world where action is given no second thought. In the story Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, the two lovers’ lives end by the irrational actions caused by immaturity, ability to control one’s anger and misguidance conveying that one must think before they act. One can find it challenging to control their own feelings towards others because of immaturity. Romeo’s lack of maturity in being able to control his feelings is inconsistent thus, leading to the tragedy of the deaths of Juliet and himself. His approach to women is based on appearance which can be seen when he states, “Did my heart love till now? Romeo and Juliet Themes Essay

...LOVE In Romeo and Juliet, love is definitely one of the dominant themes but it differs in its forms. There are various types of love throughout the play; such as in the beginning of the play where Romeo displays a more childish and superficial love for Rosaline. This changed very quickly as soon he became infatuated with this irrational love he felt for Juliet. The play is filled with intense passion and romantic gestures between the individuals and it focuses on the romantic love surrounding them. Throughout the play, love is portrayed as an overpowering and controlling emotion that's overtakes all other loyalties or values that they may have previously cared for. The love that Romeo and Juliet shared consumed them completely, but it was also very hasty and rushed. There were many different manifestations of love in this play; such as physical, passionate and spiritual. Family and friends were being pushed away as the two lovers became engulfed with one another and this was when problems arose. Juliet spoke ‘deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wit not, be but sworn my love, and ill no longer be a Capulet’. Her undying devotion to Romeo soon became an overpowering force in which she began to ignore all common sense and rational thoughts. The love in this play was not a pretty, idealized emotion that always ended perfectly, though it was always intimate and passionate. But with that passion came new obstacles and problems for themselves and the people surrounding...

The Friar In Romeo And Juliet Essay

...Juliet and the Friar were the main causes of the problems in Romeo and Juliet. Juliet caused most of the trouble, but the Friar caused a major portion of the trouble as well. Juliet was the main cause of the trouble in Romeo and Juliet. Because of her, most of the chaos in the story occurred. She drank the potion, which caused her to appear dead and caused the death of Romeo, Paris, and herself. She decided that drinking the potion from the Friar was the easiest way to stay with Romeo, but it was probably the most complex decision she could have made. Also, the way she wanted to approach the marriage of her and Romeo was not very smart. Juliet should not have drank the potion from the Friar. “Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, I drink to thee”(Shakespeare pg 457). There were so many terrible consequences that occurred because of it...

Romeo And Juliet Comparative Essay

...William Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” is an exciting play that many have gone to watch before. In fact, it has become so famous that when the technology of capturing moving pictures became commercial, the play has been incorporated into many films throughout the century.
