I value the experience of volunteering for Rosecrance’s crisis line. I began my training with four group sessions that involved learning about various psychiatric disorders, medications, how to handle various types of calls, and role playing. I then moved on to learning a book full of resources located in the Champaign/Urbana area and 12 supervised hours of taking calls. After this extensive training, I was finally able to take calls on my own. I felt confident in my ability to help people in their time of crisis because of the valuable lessons I learned during training. I learned how to demonstrate to someone I was actively listening during a phone call. Without seeing someone in person, it is sometimes difficult to know they are truly focused
