In the "Rough Road Ahead: Do Not Exceed Posted Speed Limit" by Joe Kurmaskie, a cyclist decides to test his luck with trying a “‘shortcut’ that was to slice away hours of [his] ride to Yosemite National Park”, advice given to him by a group of old strangers. Eventually he begins to realize that his trust was misplaced as his water supply diminishes to nothingness and the landscape changes from hopeful straight roads to ghost-town scattered hills. The various tragic events in the setting, such as the rusted pump and washout juice factory, as well as his depletion of water, follows the downward spiral of both the cyclist’s sanity and trust.

The water pump at the first stop on the Yosemite trip is a sign of hopefulness for the cyclist, that is, until he realizes that the pump is rusted. As he works “the handle of the rusted water pup with all [his] strength” the narrator slowly realizes how little help the “two hundred degrees…battery acid” water will be for him. The water pump, a sign of possible revival, shows the beginning of the cyclist’s sanity’s fall. His water supply continues to deplete as he moves on, where the “flat road [is] replaced by short, rolling hills”. …show more content…
The further he searches the “abandoned factory of juices and dreams”, taking his sanity to the edge in the “dry honeycombs of [his] deteriorating brain”. At this point, the cyclist’s trust starts to falter as well as he questions the judgement of the old

It covers these topics: • Choosing Safety First • Driver Factors • Everyday Driving Skills • Special Circumstances and Emergencies CHOOSING SAFETY FIRST You have important choices to make – sometimes even before you start your vehicle – that will affect your safety when you are behind the wheel. Begin by making sure you and your vehicle are “fit to drive.” VEHICLE CHECKS: PREPARING TO DRIVE 1. The Financial Crisis in Spain

...Sample Article: The Financial Crisis in Spain Summary Unemployment in Spain has reached 17.4 percent, according to figures released April 24 by the National Statistics Institute. Even without the global recession, Spain's economy likely would be going through a rough patch now due to the country's overheated housing market; with the recession, it is also suffering from a banking crisis and an industrial slump. Analysis Spain's unemployment rate rose from 13.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 17.4 percent in the first quarter of 2009, increasing the ranks of the unemployed to more than 4 million, according to National Statistics Institute (INE) figures released on April 24. Spanish Economy Minister Elena Salgado said that the first quarter of 2009 will be the worst in terms of increasing unemployment. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that unemployment in Spain will reach 17.7 percent in 2009 and 19.3 percent in 2010, but the INE figures seem to indicate that unemployment could exceed 20 percent by the end of 2009. Of all the European countries, Spain has in many ways been one of the most gravely affected by the global economic crisis. Even without the global recession, Spain would most likely be undergoing a correction this year due to its extremely overheated housing market. But it is facing a severe housing market correction, an industrial slump, and a banking crisis caused by the housing correction and the recession's overall effects -- simultaneously...

Mormons in the 1830's and 40's

...“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,” (otherwise known as Mormons) have proved to be crucial to the growth of the U.S.A. in every aspect. After the establishment of religion in 1827, Mormons have been the target of persecution and discrimination by many. The bulk of this persecution occurred in 1836 when a group of rebel militia attacked Mormon headquarters located in Northern Missouri. This ambush against the Mormons sparked an onslaught of hate crimes to come. After being exiled from Missouri and Illinois, Brigham Young led an intrepid party of immigrants into the Great Salt Lake valley in 1847. The population grew rapidly, and by 1849, the Mormons had managed to form a civil government with Young at the helm. This brief summary has set the stage for this report, where I will evaluate Mormons of the 1830’s and 40’s and enlighten you on their beliefs, culture, and impact throughout American History. Establishment of Religion The establishment of the LDS church is a very interesting story that many people do not understand. “In the spring of 1820, a 14-year-old boy named Joseph Smith went into a grove of trees near his home in Palmyra, New York, and prayed to learn which church he should join. In answer to his prayer, God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to him, just as heavenly beings had appeared to prophets like Moses and Paul in biblical times.” Joseph learned that the Church originally organized by Jesus Christ was no longer on the earth...
