In this chapter Rudolfo Anaya introduces the characters as well as the cultural division in Antonio´s family by showing his dream. Before the dream Antonio's parents discus Ultima and how she will be coming to live with them. The discussion between his parents opens the major theme that Ultima is the bridge between the Luna and the Vaquero. During the dream he witnesses his own birth and the argument that follows on what to do with the afterbirth. Ultima settles the argument and claims that she is the only one that knows his destiny. Ultima´s seemingly omnipotent vision of the future exemplifies magical realism. Both sides of the family want to control Antonio's fate, something that ultimately should be his decision.
