Ruining Your Life And You Re To Blame Analysis

In discussions of Social Networking, one controversial issue has been whether or not social media sites are good for society. On one hand, Nicole Ellison, in a New York Times blog “Is MySpace Good for Society?” argues they are helpful, claiming they “have made us better off as a society and as individuals, and that as they continue to be adopted by more diverse populations, we will see an increase in their utility.” On the other hand, Kerry Coppinger, in her work, “Phone Fetish: How Snapchat is Ruining Your Life and you’re to Blame”, argues that social media sites, such as Snapchat, are harmful, stating “We seemingly can’t go anywhere without posting something about it, in hopes of being validated by our peers.” My own view is that social media sites are damaging because they falter society’s growth and spark hatred and feuds.

First off, one of the essential things in society is growth. How we grow as a person affects how we grow as a society. Americans today tend to believe that society is growing because of the things we post and tweet about, however, it is …show more content…
In several well-publicized cases, victims have even been driven to suicide. The anonymity afforded online can bring out dark impulses that might otherwise be suppressed. Cyber-bullying has spread widely among youth, with 42% reporting that they have been victims, according to a 2010 CBS News report.” Basically, Jung means that because online bullies have been able to sneak past getting caught while openly persecuting someone, the victims have nowhere to run, and in some cases committed suicide. The most common users of social media are from society’s youth, whom of which are also the future of society. If social media has flicked their finger in the Domino Effect, and one by one victims of things such as cyber-bullying has the youth of the internet falling down, and committing suicide, then one by one our society starts to shrink, in numbers and in

Review of Law in Context

...from the summary executioner before you dive in; These notes are an interpretation of the book Law in Context and the lectures given as part of the 1991 Course. They are not a satisfactory substitution for reading the text. You are only likely to get the maximum value out of this summary by reading it in conjunction with the text. The question of ‘the law in whose context’ may be worth keeping in mind as you read. This is an interpretation seen through my eyes, not yours. My comments are not unbiased, as it is as equally unlikely that yours may be. So my ‘advice’ is consider what is said here and in the book considering the need to understand the ‘mechanics’ that help make sense of the more involved themes that develop in the book as you progress through Law in Context. The observations, important in their own right, may be particularly useful for seeing how their often ubiquitous expression is taken as ‘normal’ in the areas of wider society, such as in discussions of economics and power. It is unlikely that you will find any ‘right answers’ from this summary, but I do hope it helps you in synthesising opinions. A bibliography of books I used is given at the end of this summary. If your head isn’t spinning too much, maybe it is worth getting together earlier in the semester with friends and talking about some of the issues that particularly interest you. Don’t be worried if ‘you don’t know anything’. It’s probable that you, as for most of us, are neither as...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...
