...Professor Lori Shipley Spirituals to Rock and Roll 23 April 2016 Joan Jett Pioneers Through Rock and Roll History America has been characterized by revolutionary people changing the aspects and perspectives of its citizens through innovative acts, movements, and even through word of mouth. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the outlook of millions of Americans on the racial division in the country by using peaceful protests and eloquently delivered speeches. Benjamin Franklin and the founding fathers pioneered an idea that a country could be run by the people, which was in direct opposition to the rule they were under in Britain. These two events have set forth a phenomenon in America that allows people to challenge prototypical roles and views. When it comes to music icons that have changed the normalcy of music during their time, one would have to be Joan Jett. She was faced with the overwhelming obstacle of battling sexism and gender inequality throughout her musical career, particularly in the Rock and Roll industry in the 1970s and 80s. The music industry was changing during the 1960s in part to what Americans were experiencing; the British Invasion, the assassination of President Kennedy, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Rock and Roll quickly made its way into the mainstream being a powerful voice for the cultural revolution. Rock and Roll was a man’s world during the 70s and 80s, and women rockers were unwelcomed by both the musicians and fans. Joan...

...THE RUNAWAY, from THE THINGS THEY CARRIED AWAY Tim O'Brien, 1990 Author biography: A native of Worthington, Minnesota, Tim O'Brien graduated in 1968 from Macalaster College in St Paul. He served as a foot soldier in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, after which he pursued graduate studies in government Harvard University, then later worked as a national affairs reporter for the Washington Post. He now lives in Massachussetts. Tim O'Brien is of the generation of writers who came of age during the Vietnam War era and his writing has focused on that turbulent period of American history with compassion and insight. He is widely recognized as the preeminent American novelist of the Vietnam experience and his novels have gained widespread critical and significant popular success because of their ability to translate the experience of wartime into perspectives on the largest questions of life and death. The Things They Carried Away 1990 is both a collection of interrelated short pieces which ultimately reads with the dramatic force of a novel. A simple tale told from the perspective of one foot soldier, it depicts the men of Alpha Company, and, of course, fictional Tim O'Brien reappearing as a thread of continuity. He has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of 43. The characters battle the enemy, or maybe more the idea of the enemy, and occasionally each other. In their...

...The runaway This passage is untitled « The runaway » but it’s actually « On the Rainy River » which is a short story written by Tim O’Brien. This American author published in 1990 « The Things They Carried », a collection of related stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. While modeled after the author’biography and sharing the same name, Tim is a fictional character and not the author who’s intentionally blurs this distinction, even though he has also been drafted overthere. To sum up briefly, the character, 21, tells us how his storybook world collapsed when he received a draft notice for the Vietnam War. We’ll fisrt develop the dilemma which tortures Tim. Then we’ll analyze the role of the second character, Elroy, and the unexpected « nonconformist » punch line. This excerpt takes place in Minnesota where Tim is fishing on the Rainy River which marks the border between the USA and Canada. It deals with the issues of whether the war he has been drafted into is right and if he should go to the war or be a coward and run away from the war. The dilemma is hard. The draft, at least during the Vietnam war, was a sort of lottery that determined the order of men, by birthdate, to serve as soldiers. This was instituted because there were not enough voluntary soldiers serving in the military. The ways a citizen of the U.S. could avoid going to the Vietnam War was either leave the country or contract some life threatening desease. The first one may...

...The song I choose to do was “ Runaway Love” by Ludacris ft. Mary J. Blige. The song focuses on three different scenarios dealing with young girls from the ages of 9-11. For the first scenario it focuses on a nine year old whose mother had many different men in her life. Throughout the men who go in and out of her mother life they are sexually abusing her. She tells her mother what is happening, but her mother does not believe her. The second scenario is about an eleven year old who is being beat by her alcoholic father and only had one friend who understands her. Walking home from school one day the friend is shot by a drive by bullet. Now she is left alone because that’s was the only person she had. On the last scenario an eleven year old is doing drugs and being sexually active with males that are older. She knows if her mom finds out she will go crazy. The sum of the three stories are these young girls are going through situation where they wish they could runaway and just forget everything that has happened. The race that the song is mainly directed towards all nationalities because these things can happen to anyone. Accent- slang speaking in a way that a more African American audience would understand Gender- targeted to mainly females Class- lower class which is the poor because all the situation the parents were struggling financially or had some type of...

...cherish can be as bad that you feel it is demented and god-forsaken place. The general emotion throughout the song is sadness, because you feel bad for each of the girls and the situations they are in. The song can even make you feel a little empathy. As well as feeling bad for the girls in the song, you also start to understand where they are coming from, with wanting to just escape the situation that you’re in, because you feel like if you stay, it will only continue to get worse. Another poetic device that he uses is rhyme. Rhyming is often used in hip-hop and rap songs to make the lyrics flow together. The last word in every line rhymes with the word in the previous line, but only during the verses. The only parts that do not rhyme in “Runaway Love” are the hook and the outro. [I attached a copy of the lyrics so you would be able to refer to the song throughout reading this analysis.] Ludacris also uses imagery to make his song feel more powerful. Imagery helps the listener to relate with the characters in the song because they can see in their mind what is taking place. “Mama is on drugs getting high up in the kitchen” is an example of the imagery that is being used because the listener can picture the little girl sitting alone in her room, while her mom is doing drugs in their kitchen. This makes the listener sympathize for the little girl, Lisa, because she is only nine years old and her mother is too busy getting high to take care of her. Ludacris is able to make his listeners...

...Running head: RUNAWAY TEEN STRUGGLES Runaway Teens Struggles Joyce W. Davis Oklahoma Wesleyan University Abstract Research has shown that physical and sexual maltreatment precipitate runaway behavior in adolescents. However, there has been little large— scale examination of the family, school, and personal problems of maltreated adolescents. In the present paper, an 85—items Client information Record was completed on 2,019 runaway by shelter staff from eight southeastern states. There were significant differences in the problems reported by physically abused, sexually abusive, depression, stress and prostitution runaways when compared to their non abused runaway peers. Runaways who were both physical and sexual abuse maltreated were significantly more vulnerable and much was off than those who only experienced either physical or sexual abuse. The purpose of this review of information is to contribute a better understanding of how physical and sexual abuse are correlated to runaway teens and how depression, stress and prostitution faced by many young people, today. Runaway Teen Struggles “The runaway and throwaway issue has been a silent crisis far too long. We badly need a little noise, and the hope is that government officials, educators, and ordinary citizen join in the clamor.” Maureen, Blair Although estimates vary, each year approximately 1.5 million young people in the United States—more than half of them between the ages of 15 and 17—leave...

...In the film, (Runaway Jury, 2003) the issue of jury tampering and ethical dilemmas are examined. The 6th Amendment guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. In the beginning of any trial a jury is selected and through the voir dire process, potential bias jurors are eliminated. Runaway Jury showed the process of voir dire but the ultimate goal of each counsel in the case attempted to create a pool of jurors that were more likely to vote in favor of their client. However, the unethical behavior by both parties involved, were not in line with giving the case a fair chance to be heard without the manipulation of outside influences. The rights of individuals exist because they can justify behavior and also places limitations on behavior (Williams & Arrigo, 2012). The rogue behavior continued on throughout the film because there was no real checks and balances to their behavior. Even when the judge ordered for the jury to be sequestered, the manipulation of the jurors continued. The rights we value play a critical role in the consideration of moral behavior, as well as how one responds to controversial legal, social and political issues (Williams & Arrigo, 2012). Gun control in the movie and in real life remains a hot topic issue, especially after tragedy strikes. Therefore, what we value personal...

They went there because Canada had no slavery which meant no slave catchers. Over 10,000 people traveled there. Tudman, the leader of the underground railroad was in Canada. 4,000 million slaves were stuck as slaves. In January, 1856, Margaret Garner lived in Covington on a farm. She had four kids and husband. She lived 5 miles from freedom, so she attempted to runaway. She made it at the Ohio River at dawn. The Ohio River was a quarter mile long and frozen. They took the risk and walked over the river. ... What would you do if you were faced with a decision that could be between life and death, when you had no friends to cheer you up, nor a family to help you, and no God to shine his face upon your own? Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte for three reasons: He could have been accused of theft, become a Whig, or have lost all his old friends. The first reason Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte is that he could have been accused of theft. Johnny had already been told by his friend Rab that Mr. Lyte was a very crooked man, and for Johnny to assume a place at Mr. Lyte’s right hand would simply be given to him without question was a very idiotic hypothesis. Johnny should not have even tried to open up such diplomacy, for it would have been nothing for a man like Mr. Lyte to simply snap his fingers and send Johnny to the gallows. The second reason Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte is that he would have lost old friends. If Johnny had succeeded and was welcomed into the Lyte’s formidable household Johnny’s social life would have been carefully directed by Mr. Lyte and him alone. For one thing, the respected Whig would never allow Johnny to associate with Rab or other patriots like him. Also Johnny would not be able to choose friends for himself and this includes Cilla---but who cares about goggle eyed pigs anyhow? The third reason Johnny should not have shown his cup to Mr. Lyte is that he would have to become a Whig! Even if Johnny had...

... Solitary confinement was a really depressing scene. People were banging and begging to escape the terrifying prison. John woke up groggily asking himself, Why do I do these things? He then appeared to identify some type of infection spreading amongst the prisoners, but ahead he could say anything else he was thrust into the dispiriting concrete cell. By the time John looked up, the metal bars trapped him in, without an outflow. “You need to learn how to be a real leader!” John wanted shout with anger and distress. But, he tested to not leave his anger to take the best of him again. There has come to be a path to amaze out of here! John thought frantically. He sat down at the steel table and he heavily exhaled to reveal an old map covered by dust. The map seemed to be there for weeks and ant the bottom of this revealing map it said: Cover with dust when finished John stared at the note curiously and took off his glasses as he continued to analyze the map. “It’s a map of the underground, but how will I get to those pipes?” He carefully peeled the tape that held the old, thin paper from the banged, concrete wall and revealed a hole. The hole seemed to be dug by a fellow prisoner and in the makeshift hole was an old, red screwdriver, which was blooming with rust. John grabbed the screwdriver, confused, “Why do I need this screwdriver? It’s not like I could dig myself out of here!” He shared a chuckle with himself and went to bed, and thought about how that screwdriver...

...The slaves were tired and sick of being controlled by white men that they started to runaway. African Americans wanted to be free, so in doing so they began to rebel (De Mederio, 2009). Slave found way to sabotage the system they were living in. They slowed down their pace, murdered the owners, destroyed crops, burned down buildings/forests, and commited suicide (Africans America, n.d.). Most slaves who tried to runaway to freedom got caught and were whipped and branded (Rothbard, 2013). To control runaways, they were put in chains and shackles (Digital History, 2016). Slaves that were even caught planning for rebellion would be executed (De Medeiro, 2009). Doubling the term of indenture was common for slaves who started to leave (Rothbard,...

...Moreover, the mother and child are separated, and she was sent to live twelve miles away. She would be required to wait until it was dark to reach her son. Douglass states, “She was a field hand, and a whipping is the penalty of not being in the field at sunrise, unless a slave has special permission from his or her master to the contrary--a permission which they seldom get, and one that gives to him that gives it the proud name of being a kind master” (Douglass 3). Every mile on those journeys to visit little Fredrick his mother was in danger of being caught and would be considered a runaway slave; the punishment of which would always be a whipping and usually would also constitute being sent down the river into the deep south. The further...

...My project is about Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave from the 18th century. Crispus was believed to be born the year of 1723, in Framingham, Massachusetts. He is also believed to have been born into slavery since his father was most likely a slave and his mother was a Natick Indian. At around the age of 27, in 1750, Crispus finally had his dream come true and he was able to escape slavery, just after he escaped, he moved to Boston and changed his name to Michael Johnson. Shorty after, his owner (William Brown) put up an advertisement offering £10 to whoever brought him back. Crispus was mainly known for gallantly giving his life for Pre-America which ended up being the first casualty of the United States Revolution. Crispus was unlucky...
