Running Outside or Treadmill Running

Running Outside or Treadmill Running
Humans are born to run, at least some are. Some run because they love to run and others run to stay in shape. No matter what the reason is as to why a person runs, running can be beneficial for their health. It is well known that regular exercise, such as running, is a total body workout. When a subject begins a running program the biggest benefit they will see is they will lose weight. Running is an aerobic exercise that involves the whole body and little equipment is needed to enjoy this activity. Runners have different choices from where they decide to run to which type of surfaces they prefer to run on.
After a subject decides to begin a running program, they are now faced with the dilemma of where to go. Do they head down to the beach and run on the path or do they go to the local fitness club and run on a treadmill? The question is do they choose outdoor running or treadmill running? There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Everyone has a preference as to what kind of running they do, so it will be up to the individual as to what they will choose. Outdoor running gives the subject the pleasure of being in nature where they can enjoy the sights and sounds of the environment. They can choose their path to be challenging or easy.
It can be on the city streets or on rigorous trails in the mountains. The possibilities are limitless.
Some enjoy running with a significant other or a friend to help pass the time. Others choose to run in a group or a running club to stay motivated to continue running. Also, when the subject runs outside, they stay aware of their surroundings and their body constantly adjusts to the environment changes. However, outdoor running also exposes the subject to elements that make running challenging. During the winter, they face the cold, rain, snow, and slippery surfaces. During the summer, they are exposed to the heat, which can lower their energy level. The heat can also cause dehydration. Then of course there is pollution that can cause the subject to struggle to breath if they have allergies. If the subject has any injuries to their back or knees, they may experience increased pain due to the constant impact on hard surfaces. The subject also has uneven ground, rocks, potholes, and cracks to deal with that may cause them to fall. Then there are pedestrians, strollers, and vehicles that can block their path. An alternative to running outside is to choose to run on a treadmill. A treadmill is an exercise machine for running or walking while staying in one place.
A treadmill is usually in a controlled environment inside an air conditioned room. With this, the subject will not be exposed to the outside elements such as the sun, heat, rain or cold. If the subject has allergies, treadmill running is an alternative because they will not be out in the open. The treadmill belt has a spring that pushes the subject’s legs forward, giving them added energy. This in turn is easier on the subject’s joints, especially if they have back or knee problems. The treadmill has a continuous, smooth belt that can reduce the chance of injury to the subject because of its flat surface. Their running can be more consistent with no interruptions from traffic or pedestrians and they can run all year long. The other advantage of running on a treadmill is the subject can run in the comfort of their own home.
Yet, treadmill running can be very humdrum because there is no change of scenery. The subject also needs to work harder on the treadmill to get the same workout outdoors. In 1996,
Journal of Sports Sciences discovered, “Treadmill runners need to run at a one percent incline in order to get the same level of exercise that they would get running outdoors.” (as quoted in www.Livestrong.com. 2011). When the subject runs on a treadmill, they will most likely be running alone because of only one treadmill in the home. Another disadvantage of treadmill running is the proprioceptive perspective which is the unconscious ability to know the location of your body parts. The treadmill has a smooth surface therefore; it is easy to lose concentration and go off the belt.
There are advantages and disadvantages of running outside and running on a treadmill.
Depending on the subject they may prefer to run outside with a friend along a beach path or they may prefer to run alone on a treadmill in the comfort of their own air conditioned home. A subject may even prefer to alternate between outside running and treadmill running to vary their workout. Either way, each running choice can provide an exceptional workout, but it will ultimately be up to the subject as to what they will choose.

Running-Personal Narrative

...I was stretching for the big run when I saw my coach flash a smile at me from a distance. The bright sun made his smile brighter yet it brought unease to my mind. I looked at the crowd sitting on the wall-like bleachers, only to see their expectant faces that seemed to go on for miles. After weeks—no, months of training—the race was finally here. I knew I was ready for this but was I really ready? “Runners, if you could please get into your starting positions.” “You’ll be okay, kiddo.” said my coach while he patted my back. Once I crouched down on that track, I realized that everything was larger than I expected: the crowd, the lanes, and the runners. “On your mark...get set...GO!” The gun along with me blasted off and I ran and I ran and I ran, passing all the other runners, not even looking back with my heartbeat intensifying like a drum and my breath becoming heavier. The track below me blurred out and I felt a surge of adrenaline within me, surrendering myself to the miraculous beat of my feet against the ground. The angry pitter-patters of the soles of my shoes hitting the ground was the way I released my energy, and that's exactly what happened. I was dashing down my lane and I was free from all the uncertainty I felt before. I could see Runner #1, right in front of me, just an arm’s length away and he was certainly fast—there was no doubt about that—just not as fast as me. I quickened my pace to an unimaginable speed but I still couldn’t reach him, even after all...

...Running Running, we were always running. Running for our lives, running from our lives, but no matter what the reason, we were always running. The only time we ever stopped was about every few hours so we could rest and eat. “Who are we running from,” I would always ask my parents. They would just look at me for a while like I wouldn’t understand till I was older. Nothing else. Nothing more. During the day, there was much silence. Most noises came from the wind rustling through leave or the occasional bird. The only time anyone ever spoke was to hurry someone else up or to give directions. All this silence meant that there was a lot of time to think. I would mostly think about my life before we started running. I would think about playing in the park with other boys from...

Running In High School

...Ever since I was a kid, running was not my forté. Whether it be speed or distance, I would fall short compared to others. My physical inadequacy troubled and embarrassed me often, though never motivated me enough to take action. Not until the ten minute mile standard was introduced to me in my high school gym class. That fateful day I was nothing but surprised and fearful. Surprised that such a standard existed and fearful for the shame and embarrassment that was sure to come. As I began to run with my classmates, I remained optimistic I would fall only slightly short of the standard. However, soon enough, years of lacking any physical activity begin to catch up with me and I came in dead last. Words could not describe the shame I felt that day. The humiliation was enough for me to...

Running Research Paper

...Millions of people around the world find enjoyment in running. Although some may find runners deranged for being able to go out and run an easy eight or ten miles, running is just a way of life to them. Some do it to stay fit, for the feeling of control in their lives, or even run professionally and competitively. While there are many types of running-- easy morning jogs, sprints, cross country, marathons, and triathlons-- shoes are an important factor in all of them. With aspects such as shoe size, comfort, and shoe type, the proper running shoe’s quality can heavily contribute to a runner’s life and well-being. Although the right shoe size might be a vital characteristic for any type of shoe, it is most critical towards a runner’s shoe. Running with even one size too big or too small could lead things like blisters, lost toenails, stress fractures, and other foot-health related problems. This is why buying the correct shoe size for any type of runner is essential. However, due to everyone’s feet swelling and getting bigger as the day goes on, purchasing some running shoes in the morning rather than in the evening could prevent people from getting the proper size. With the average swelling peak being at 4:00 pm., it is recommended at that time to find the proper size....

Once I was in high school never did I think running would become my main sport; becoming my number one reason for going to school. When a former teammate told me I had the potential to go on and run in college, every day I would show up to practice, putting all my effort to perfect my times. Not once did it ever cross my mind that it was possible to have something wrong with my body, causing me to sit out from running for what felt like two eternal years. From then on, I realized this sport was all I had; it was the only thing that helped me feel better. I learned never to take my sport for granted because I had big things ahead when it came to running. The start of my first year I was new in the state of Oklahoma, and I was to start high school off with no friends. It was a bit nerve wrecking but I had decided I would join a sport to become involved at school. Since I had been on the Track team in elementary school, I decided to try out for the Cross-Country team since it was similar to Track. Soon enough came the day of my first race on the junior varsity team, the feeling of finishing a race was great and I was...
