...In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, conformity plays a major role. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, there are two rival gangs, the greasers and the Socs. The greasers are considered hoods and delinquents, while the Socs are considered nice, responsible children, even though they often are just as bad as the greasers. Ponyboy Curtis, a greaser, is not like everyone else, while the other greasers beat up strangers and rob gas stations, Ponyboy likes to read books, watch movies, and look at sunsets. Through the actions of the greasers, Hinton shows that a teenager will tend to hide his differences ad will do what is expected of him, rather than what he wants, proving that conformity can be beneficial. Darry, Ponyboy’s older brother, is different from the rest of the greasers. While in school, Darry was a football star, a great student, and a well-behaved child. When his parents die, leaving him in charge of his brothers, he has to leave everything behind to become a...

...One may think that children of different social class have differences, but do they share some similarities? These kids have their own conflicts to resolve in their lives, even if their rich or poor; It doesn’t matter. Both have similar problems that they need to resolve or just live through it. In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, proves that Greasers, a gang who lives in bad neighborhoods and may have some financial issues, are similar to the Socs, who are rich and have lots of time in their hands. ...In S.E. Hinton's, The Outsiders, people judged each other by family wealth. All they have to do is forget the wealth and focus on qualities, heroic qualities, of everyone, greaser and Soc. Here are the reasons why three greasers, Darry, Ponyboy, and Johnny should be named heroes as a result of their selfless actions. Darry is a thoughtful young man, and though he never acted like a superhero, he has qualities of a real hero. In the book it mentions that the Curtis parents were killed in an Auto Wreck, so Darry was left in charge of his brothers. Darry is father-brother figure to his brothers and honestly not every 20 year old can take care of two high school boys. Since Darry has to provide food for his brothers he works to jobs so that...

...Heroes don't all have to be perfect. The Outsiders is a book about the Greasers and the Socs. The greasers are poor and not have all of their basic needs met as the Socs are rich and get everything thing they want. this starts a rivalry. S.E Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was only 16 because she was a teenager it provides an accurate portrayal of what being a teenager was like in the 1960s. The book was based in the 1960s and took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this book there is a lot to argue if the greasers should consider themselves heroes or villains. The greasers are heroes because they stand up for what they believe in, they risk their lives for others, each and every one of them has had to overcome hard challenges, and they help each other become stronger. The first characteristic that make one or more of the Greasers heroes is that they stand up for what they believe in the fourth chapter ponyboy says to the Socs. “You know what a Soc is? White trash with mustangs and Madras.”(page 55) this is an insult to the Socs because the Socs had been cussing out Ponyboy and Johnny for picking up their girls, and they were not ok with that. Ponyboy had gotten fed up that the Socs and...

...Imagine a world where you are constantly criticized and judged, when violence becomes an everyday issue. In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy lives in a place where he is constantly pegged in a category. When a quagmire forces him and his friends to defend themselves, they must endure a series of emotional and physical challenges. With this, the Socs were responsible for causing Johnny’s death. There are many reasons why this claim is true. The only reason the boys were at the church was because the Socials jumped them and Johnny had to defend Ponyboy and himself, forcing them to go into hiding. After Johnny kills Bob, they go to Dally for help. When Johnny told Dally how he had knifed the Soc, he explained to Dally that, “We figured...

...“I will destroy my enemy when they become my friend”, this is what Abraham Lincoln said when he was still the president in the 1800’s. This is the same type of thing that S.E. Hinton was trying to write about when she wrote the book The Outsiders. See in the beginning of the book, the socials and the greasers hated each other, the the socials were always jumping and beating the greasers. But at one point of the book PB and Johnny were jumped but Johnny ended up killing a greaser named Bob. And the book transitions from that point on. The reason Darry is a hero is because he gave up a football scholarship, free education, takes care of Soda and PB, works two jobs so he has the money to take care of Soda and PB. The reason I think...

Johnny Cade learns to be appreciative and thoughtful of nature and the Greasers. According to chapter five, "I never noticed colors or clouds and stuff until you keep reminding me about them. ...What is a hero? What does it mean to be one? The Outsiders is written by S.E Hinton published in 1967 by the Viking Press, the most recent edition was published in 2006. One or more Greaser(s) can be considered a hero, there are many examples such as; Johnny and Ponyboy saved children from a burning fire, Ponyboy stopped Two-Bit from telling off Johnny’s mom, and Johnny risked his life to save Ponyboy’s. Firstly, Ponyboy and Johnny were found in a very difficult situation, Ponyboy was being brutally drowned in a fountain by Bob the Soc, and Johnny was about to be beat. This was a very traumatic moment, during this Johnny was trying to figure out how to save Ponyboy, then he had remembered his switchblade and pulled it out. As Ponyboy was nearing death he stabbed Bob and Bob fell to the floor. A quote from that scene is “They might have killed you, and they were gonna beat me up.” Pg 57 Many argue this is self defense and many argue it’s not, but this clearly states Randy was coming after Johnny too, so it does fall under self defense. Not only did Johnny save Ponyboy’s life he risked his. That is the work of a hero....

...The Outsiders Book/Movie Comparison S. E. Hinton's story "The Outsiders" is a story the examines two different social groups in high school back in the 1960's. The book was such a big hit around the world that Francis Ford Coppola decided to make a movie out of it. When making the movie Francis didn’t want to leave out the little details that made the movie unique. There are many similarities and many differences between the book and the movie. My goal is to examine those similarities and differences and to look at the meaning behind the small details in the book and in the movie. One of the first similarities between the book and the movie was the 1960's setting. The book and movie both use old cars and the way the characters dress to express the story's 1960 setting. In both the book and movie the Socs drive new Mustangs and Corvairs, but the greasers drive old fixed up cars. "The Outsiders" book and movie both have a blue Mustang that is driven by the Socs. The Mustang represents fear and danger in the Greasers eyes, because whenever they see the Mustang coming they know something bad is about to go down. for his little brother, and that he wants Ponyboy to succeed in life. Another relationship represented in the book and the movie is between Johnny and Dally....

...Sixteen years after a sixteen-year-old wrote this book, Francis Ford Coppola turned this novel into a movie. The book is a coming-of-age novel, but the movie focuses on the characters' loss of innocence. The movie follows the story line very closely. The reader is only told that this story takes place in the southwest, but the movie places it in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the year 1966. It also changes the conflict from the East Side versus the West side to the northside versus the southside. This minor directional change was probably made due to the relative time proximity to the musical West Side Story, which won the best picture Academy Award in l961. However, as with all movies, character insight that is critical to understanding the story is lost when the format goes from the written word to the screen. Ponyboy is telling us the story, the same as in the book, but the 91-minute film only glosses over many character relationships. With the exception of Ponyboy, the viewer misses out on knowing most of the novel's characters.
