...The Occupational Safety and Health Act provides specific regulations for employers to ensure employees Safety and health, a survey of 117 employees evaluated employee perceptions of workplace safety. Analyses found that employers are not fully committed to providing sufficient safety cultures for their employees. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from the U.S. Department of Labor in 2008 A total of 1.6 million injuries and illnesses in private industry required healing away from work; and that employee absenteeism cause a reduction in man-hours which leads to less profit that affect the financial health of the company, and can be readily avoided by having a culture of safety. The business ethics of any organization will be a reflection of all actions by people within that organization although the attitudes and perceptions of employees’ about the ethical behavior of an organization are dependent on the decisions made and actions taken by the organization’s management (O’Toole, 2002). Studies have found that ethical businesses will normally have a social conscience and it would be concerned with the health, safety, and well-being of its employees. (Warren and Tweedale, 2002). Also the organizational culture has a major influence on decisions made by both managers and employees (Dettman, 2007). Safety culture is an organization’s norms, beliefs, roles, attitudes, and practices concerned with minimizing employees exposure to workplace hazards. Studies have found that...

...where he was going because a dog was chasing him. He then rode out between two parked cars and was stuck by the car. The incident represented a public safety issue according to Michigan Safe Kids Coalition; bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer product except the automobile. Angie Young was very upset and outraged when the teenager that hit Marcus was let off with just the loss of his driving licenses until age 20. She felt something more needed to be done to insure the safety of her children in the neighborhood. As a citizen she participated in the legislative process by writing a letter to her congress women complaining about the speed limit. Ms Young questioned the law maker on what could be done to reduce speeding cars in her neighborhood. Ms Young’s congress women suggested a campaign petition to install speed bumps on her street. This scenario demonstrates how the legislative process influences public health when a citizen complains to a law maker about an issue that is important to them. Ms Young collected 500 signatures for his petition which demonstrates that speeding in residential neighborhoods is a public safety concern for the Neighborhood citizens. Pedestrian and bicycle safety comes under public safety as many communities have laws that require children to wear safety gear such as helmets, and pads while riding bicycles. The role of government in public health care is shaped by both the needs and demands of its citizens...

Angie felt something more needed to be done to increase the safety of the children in the neighborhood so she wrote a letter to her congress women complaining about the speed limit around her neighborhood. She asked what could be done to lower the speeding cars that come through the neighborhood and it was suggested that she campaign petition to have speed bumps installed on her street. ...Why New Illinois Concealed Carry Gun Law Increases Public Safety By Matt MacBradaigh New Illinois Concealed Carry Gun Law Increases Public Safety. Gun politics as usual, antigun politicians like Gov. Pat Quinn say new law endangers public safety. But that is exactly contrary to the academic research on the matter. When Illinois passed a law to allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns, it became the last state in the union to do so. Illinois previously allowed no handguns outside the home, but the courts ruled this violated the Second Amendment, and gave the state legislature until July 9 to change their law before the old was repealed. In the land that made the phrase “Chicago politics” infamous, the stakes – and grandstanding – were high. A version of the bill was originally sent on to Governor Pat Quinn, who threatened veto and sent the bill back with suggested changes. The changes were all but ignored and the legislature passed the bill with a two-thirds majority anyway. Governor Quinn called the vote “extremely disappointing,” saying it “will lead to tragedy” and that “public safety should never be compromised or negotiated away.” He accused the legislature of “surrender[ing] to the National Rifle Association.” But who’s playing politics? Does Gov Quinn have a point, or is he patently wrong? Based on academic research from criminologists, Governor Quinn is wrong. His suppositions of what endangers people run exactly contrary to research. There is no reason to...

...Patient Safety Jesse Woodworth Baker College of Muskegon Patient Safety According to the 2010 Office of Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services, 180,000 Medicare deaths were contributed to poor hospital care (Allen, 2013). It is the responsibility of every member of the health care team to ensure that each patient is safe from any harm. Due to the vast amount of issues such as preventable infections acquired within the medical facility, multiple organizations have created standards regarding patient safety. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (2014) defines patient safety as “Making care continually safer by reducing harm and preventable mortality” (para. 1). Each visit to a healthcare facility places a patient at risk for harm. Five percent of patients treated by health care professional, in both a facility and the patient’s home, obtain a healthcare acquired infections. Though some of these healthcare acquired infections (HAI) are not caused by any error, the majority of them are preventable. The most common of these infections is catheter related blood borne infections. These infections begin when a pathogen enters the body via the inserted catheter and infects the blood stream (O'grady & Alex et al., 2011). In reaction to these types of infections, organizations such as the Center for Disease Control have created guidelines in order to prevent patient harm. Though many organizations have developed their own interpretation...

...According to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, racial profiling is “any action undertaken for reasons of safety, security or public protection, that relies on stereotypes about race, colour, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, or place of origin, or a combination of these, rather than on a reasonable suspicion.” (OHRC). The practice of racial profiling is often times criticized for utilizing prejudice – ultimately promoting false syllogisms about certain races (ie. All black people are involved with gangs). However, is racial profiling really an unethical practice? Many can argue that it is. However, according to Darwin’s view of human nature, racial profiling is justifiable due to the fact that: it is an act of discression and safety, racial...

...October 28, 2014 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has come a lengthy way to cut the death rates of firefighters in half. In 1970, they implemented a plan to help change working conditions for all Americans. OSHA was charged with the accountability of fulfilling health and safety standards, conducting inspections, issuing citations and penalties for noncompliance of regulations. OSHA created a division called National Institute Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This division, the NIOSH, conducted research on the causes and prevention of work-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths, then provide information on what new measures can be used to prevent this from occurring so often. The group was directly appointed by the president of the United States (Edwards, 2010). During my research, I discovered a book detailing the standards of OSHA. Accident Prevention and OSHA Compliance is a book that is said to contain information obtained from authentic and highly regarded sources. The book discusses some interventions OSHA and NIOSH have implemented. Here are just a few interventions, Occupational Health, Hazard communications, Respiratory Protection, Protective Equipment, Emergency Response Planning, Enforcing Safety, First Aid and Medical Personnel. OSHA also covered Inspections, Preventable Injuries, and the hardest one of all which is Tragic Accidents (Michaud, 1995). As we can see, OSHA, being enacted into law in...
