...Everything happened just as Mexico enjoyed great success for growth and economic development in1994 when was recently signed the North American Free Trade Agreement and the president Salinas enjoyed and celebrated the economic growth of the country. The Mexicans had finally found a leader in which they could trust. Foreign investment in Mexico had grown by 98 Percent in 1993 and the streets were full of Mexican foreign brands and stores, such as Mcdonals, Dominos pizza, Pizza hut outlets,etc.. Mexico was about to be accepted as a full member of the OECD, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The whole world was surprised by the rapid growth of Mexico and its citizens were proud of it. “Polls showed that Mexican people were more optimistic about the future than they had been in years”(12).Everything seemed too good to be true, until this happiness and celebration did not last long for Mexican people. Just when everything was going perfectly well, one night in1994 when the president Carlos Salinas de Gortari was celebrating the New year with his family and friends, it was reported that there had just been a guerrilla uprising in the southern state of Chiapas remote, “More than two thousand Mayan Indians, carrying everything from machetes to AK47 riffles, had taken the city of St Cristobal de las Casas shortly after midnight and were reported to have also seized the nearby cities of Ocosingo, Altamirano and Las Margaritas”(14). Mayan Indians were protesting and demanding...

...Research Paper A Corrupted Government and Abducted Students: How Can We Ensure the Safety of Mexico’s Citizens and Others? AP Geography Stefania Grazzianne 1/28/15 Mr. Butler 2B Word count:_________ Tears fall on banners and printed images of the many students that have gone missing over the past few weeks in Iguala, Mexico. Families and friends have gathered round to grieve for who they have lost on September 26, 2014. Earlier that year, forty-three college students have gone missing for the past months and weeks after protesting against the government for its unfair reforms in education. For the past months, these forty-three students have not been found and still remain missing. Some have been found dead; burned up or shot. It results that the Mexican government has strong ties with a large criminal gang association, and permitted the criminal association to illegally abduct the students. As the people of Mexico are roaming the streets, protesting in rage, the government is refusing to do anything to stop or prevent such events as this. One must believe that Mexico is in desperate need for help and support, and thus needs outside help to stop such events from happening-perhaps step by step, the government will crash (overthrown) . One must agree that the United States must step in and help the citizens...

...to Carlos Salinas de Gortari and his outgoing administration. Gortari’s government currency policy put an unbelievable strain on the nation’s finances. In the early 1990’s, Mexico seemed to have established itself as a reformer and was establishing economic development. Domestic deregulation and privatization combined with liberalization of trade and investment led to rapid growth and massive inflow of direct and foreign investments. By May 1994 Mexico falsely believed that there was prosperity in the nation and that it in fact could be a first world nation. The Banks were just lending credit without conducting proper checks or having any accountability and it was widely known that the currency was overvalued and there was economic mismanagement taking place. The situation was not helped and led to a collapse in confidence by several political shocks that took place like the uprising in the South and the assassination of the leading presidential candidate (Gil-Diaz, the CATO journal vol.17 no 3). The government’s corruption caused the increased account deficit fostered by consumer binding and government spending alarmed the investors who started selling their investments depleting the already low central reserves bank. In order to maintain the fixed exchange rate, the economically right thing to do, would have been to sharply increase interest rates by allowing the monetary base to shrink, as dollars were being withdrawn from the reserves.
