Anyone who has walked along a street when it is dark knows that the amount of lighting on the street, or lack thereof, can greatly influence the mood of the area. This is particularly true in the areas from Salter Street, around the Halifax Waterfront, and along Hollis Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Within these areas, there is a great variation in the amount of lighting present along the walkways which greatly influences a person’s mood in that area and in turn making them feel safe or unsafe.
I started my investigation along Salter Street. The street itself was well lit from various street lamps; however, the end of the street that was attached to the boardwalk has almost double the amount of lights along both sides of the street. Along the boardwalk the lights were a tad sparser than the road leading up to it, nevertheless, there were no dark areas along my route. The amount of illumination along the boardwalk increased dramatically once I reached the area around the Bicycle Thief restaurant which was decorated with string lights along the building and shrubbery as well as lamp posts. The remaining boardwalk, which leads to the farmers market, was similar to what I had witnessed earlier at the start of my walk along the boardwalk. As I walked along Salter and the boardwalk, I felt safe. This feeling of safety created an ease within me throughout the walk which made me enjoy the walk even more. I was able to look around, talk, and laugh with no fear that I was at risk. On Hollis Street, however, I did not feel safe. This, therefore, caused an uneasiness in my mood. I became nervous and conscious of every noise around me. I feared other passers-by simply because I could not see their face and my ability to talk normally was lessened.
