While these officers are necessary, committed volunteers are also essential to the success of this extensive ministry and its programs. Historical Roots In 1865, the Salvation Army was founded in London by William Booth, an English Methodist minister. Military ranks and titles were assigned according to their responsibilities. His wife, Catherine, was co-founder. The "soldiers" preached openly in the streets. ...The Salvation Army Week4TeamC Ethics and Social Responsibilities 17 June 2013 Professor Ward Scheitrum The Salvation Army The Salvation Army’s duty to the community stems back in history. In, 1852, William Booth started his ministerial profession, desiring to win over the hearts and minds of England and bring them to Christ. He would walk the streets of London as an advocate for the gospel of Jesus Christ and would primarily focus his messages to the needy. He disagreed with the ideas of the stance that the churches of London took. He decided to take his idea to the people, instead of fighting the church. His commitment led to the disagreement with the religious leaders, who believed in the teachings of the churches beliefs. He decided to leave the church because of that reason and toured across England, to establish meetings in order to gain substantial like minded believers. This essay keys in on a few important points, such as; influences of the organization’s social commitment, social responsibility, and their potential moral and ethical effects on the world today. ...One of his drivers asked 2 weeks off to take care of a ailing family member. But the company rules said that this driver was not eligible. If Colvard went by the book, the driver may eventually take the days off anyway and be fired. On the other hand Colvard chose to give the driver the time off. Although, he took some heat for the decision, he also kept a valuable employee. Had the Colvard been faced with same decision 6 months earlier, he says he would have gone the other way. What changed his thinking was a month he spent in McAllen, Texas. It was a part of UPS management training experience called the Community Internship Program (CIP). During this month in McAllen, Colvard built housing for the poor, collected clothing for the Salvation army, and worked in a drug rehab center. Colvard gives the program credit for helping him empathize with employees facing crisis back home. And he says CIP has made him a better manager. “My goal was to make the numbers, and in some cases that meant not looking at the individual but at the bottom line. After that 1 month stay, I immediately started reaching out to people in a different way.” CIP was established by UPS to help open the eyes of company’s predominantly white managers to the poverty and inequality in many cities. Today, the program takes 50 of the company’s most promising executives each summer and brings them to cities around the country. There they deal with a variety of problems from transportation to housing, education...

Cutting through the general mayhem, a drunken tenor sings a tune about his lass at home. Talk of home outside the ocean liner infuriates Yank and he tells the tenor to be quiet. Long, quite drunk, stands up and makes a Marxist speech, preaching to the men that if the ship is home, their home is hell and the Upper Class put them there. Yank tells him to join the Salvation Army and get a soapbox. Paddy, a wise, older fireman tells the men that life on an Ocean Liner is hell by comparison to his life on a Clipper Ship. The Salvation Army Thrift Stores are dedicated to raise money for its rehabilitation programs by selling donated used items such as clothing, housewares, and toys at a cheaper price for those in need (“History,” 2016). Like many other thrift stores, The Salvation Army thrift stores suffer from the increasing problem of waste disposal due to unwanted donations.
