...GUIDANCE & COUNSELING PRE FINALS Princess Shelly Ann Carla Aguiman AB Math Maalaala Mo Kaya(MMK) October 5, 2013 Episode tells about the story of Joan Panopio, the news anchor of TV Patrol Southern Tagalog. Joan came from a family which was not well-off, yet, she kept her high spirits as a child. As a kid, she has dreamed about joining the annual “Sagala”. Yet, because of her physical appearance, she never got a shot at it. She was also insulted and teased because of her looks. Yet, her father always tells her that she is beautiful. She was also discriminated because of their family’s economic status. Her dream was to be the next Korina Sanchez. When she got to college, she took Developmental Communication, a course that would help her get closer to fulfilling her dream. She thought she already lives in an environment where people would accept her no matter what she is. Yet, her classmates still discriminate her, even letting her join a beauty pageant only to make fun of her. Because of that, she regained her childhood fears. As a practicumer, she still experienced the discrimination. These experiences only discouraged her with her dream. She graduated, but she worked in a DVD rental store, a work which is very far from her course. She met a man who eventually became her boyfriend. Her father misjudged him, thinking that Greg influenced her to stay in their town instead of applying for her dream job at Manila. Because of this event, she and her father drifted apart....

...Case Study: Implementing a Syndromic Surveillance System Loreli Galvey, Samantha Sweeney, Marie Her, Sholanda Morris, Juanita Sanchez-Noble HCS 533 December 22, 2014 Portia Bonnett 1) How will your agency seek to ensure the quality of the data acquired from many hospitals throughout the state? Syndromic surveillance refers to methods relying on detection of individual and population health indicators that are discernable before confirmed diagnoses are made. Prior to the laboratory confirmation of an infectious disease, ill persons may exhibit signs, symptoms or laboratory findings that can be tracked through a variety of data sources. Data acquisition can be manual or automatic. Manual acquisition requires personnel resources like email a report or transfer a file, whenever data are to be transmitted. Automated processes may result in the transmission of a text report, a data file, or a series of structured messages over an error-tolerant interface that do not require human intervention to trigger each report. Developing systems such as web-based or handheld devices that allow providers to manually enter information at the time of patient care can help ensure the quality of data acquired from different hospitals. These systems allow more specific and complete patient syndromic information to be gathered and would enable better identification of patients who have the condition of interest. Developing standard formats to store or transmit data is another way of ensuring...

...Kritika Ku ltu ra NEW SCHOLARS FORUM Gay Language: Defying the Structural Limits of English Language in the Philippines Norberto V. Casabal Lyceum of Subic Bay, Philippines nvcasabal@yahoo.com Abstract Gay language has achieved a higher degree of acceptance in recent years in the Philippines. Both gays and nongays can be heard uttering gay expressions. But the main role of gayspeak for gay people in the Philippines is to function as an “armor” to shield themselves from the chasm and the social stigma caused by gender differences. From a linguistic point of view, this paper not only describes the nature of this gay language and how expressions are coined; it also looks at how code mixing (gayspeak + English language) is made possible. This paper also examines how this code-mixing creatively violates the grammatical structure of the use of the English language in the Philippines. Keywords code-mixing, gayspeak, gender difference, Philippine English, street-talk About the author Norberto V. Casabal is Head for Academic Affairs of Lyceum of Subic Bay. He is currently pursuing his MA in English Language and Literature Teaching at the Ateneo de Manila University. Introduction Binabae and bakla are familiar words in Filipino street-talk. But what about badaf, baklush, and baklers? These are a little confusing for the average Filipino speaker, while the expressions Bading Garci, pa-mihn, pa-girl, X-men, will lose most expert speakers of the Filipino language. These are terms which...

...Maybank IB Research PP16832/01/2013 (031128) Economics & Market Update 2 May 2012 Minimum Wage Labour Day “Gift” Another SRI delivered. PM Najib announced the country’s minimum wage policy on the eve of Labour Day. The National Minimum Wage Policy is part of the Strategic Reform Initiatives (SRI) for Human Capital Development under the Economic Transformation Programme. The minimum wage is set at MYR800-MYR900 per month with some allowances or fixed cash payments allowed to be considered in the calculation for minimum wage. It will be enforced six months from the date the Order is gazetted and will benefit 3.2m private sector workers (26%) out of the 12.3m total employment in the country. Impact on inflation should be gradual. Labour costs account for 9% of total production costs for the whole economy. But with only 26% of workers to benefit from the minimum wage, this group, at most, constitutes only 2.4% of total production cost, we estimate. According to a World Bank study in 2011, Malaysia’s wage growth (2.6% p.a.) was slower than productivity growth (6.7% p.a.), implying the capacity to implement minimum wage without causing excessive inflation rate pressures. We expect a gradual impact on inflation and maintain our inflation rate forecasts of 2.7% for 2012 and 3.3% for 2013. Gradual implementation to help manage the impact. The impact on other macroeconomic variables like employment and investment can only be gauged after some time since this is the first time an economywide...
