Unobservable school, parents and child’s characteristics could have an impact on both nutrition and educational outcomes, resulting in a severe endogeneity problem. Based on a large data set from Madagascar (with nearly 6000 pupils), this paper tries to estimate the causal relationship between nutrition and school achievement with the help of an instrumental variable method. Variation in the total amount of rainfall from a year to an other during the five first years of a child’s life is used as an exogenous instrument to predict the long term nutritional status. Once instrumented the effect of nutrition over test scores appears to be larger, meaning that OLS estimates of this relationship were underestimated. The type of analysis chosen depends on the research design, characteristics of the variables, shape of the distributions, level of measurement, and whether the assumptions required for a particular statistical test are met. A crosstabulation is a joint frequency distribution of cases based on two or more categorical variables. Displaying a distribution of cases by their values on two or more variables is known as contingency table analysis and is one of the more commonly used analytic methods in the social sciences. They have “been shown to predict students’ future educational attainment and adult employment and income” (Trafton, 2013, para. 2). First used in Imperial China for determining suitable employees for the government of the ruling class (Do standardized tests show an accurate view of students’ abilities, 2012), the standardized test as we know it now is a result of an open letter to the public by the U.S. Department of Education entitled, “A Nation At Risk: The Imperative For Educational Reform”, that was released in 1983 (Jolley, 2014). The SAT, an aptitude test typically taken by high school juniors and seniors, was started in 1926 and has been modified multiple times to eradicate any evidence of bias and contain no references to content outside the classroom (Bauerlein, 2015). The demand for removing bias has led to one of the reasons for opposition to standardized testing; teaching to the test. The present study compared the academic achievements of homeschooled children with children attending traditional public school. When the homeschooled group was divided into those who were taught from organized lesson plans (structured homeschoolers) and those who were not (unstructured homeschoolers), the data showed that structured homeschooled children achieved higher standardized scores compared with children attending public school. Exploratory analyses also suggest that the unstructured homeschoolers are achieving the lowest standardized scores across the 3 groups. ...discriminant analysis handwriting occupational therapy child validation studies In this study we sought to validate the discriminant ability of the Evaluation Tool of Children’s Handwriting– Manuscript in identifying children in Grades 2–3 with handwriting difficulties and to determine the percentage of change in handwriting scores that is consistently detected by occupational therapists. Thirty-four therapists judged and compared 35 pairs of handwriting samples. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed to determine (1) the optimal cutoff values for word and letter legibility scores that identify children with handwriting difficulties who should be seen in rehabilitation and (2) the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in handwriting scores. Cutoff scores of 75.0% for total word legibility and 76.0% for total letter legibility were found to provide excellent levels of accuracy. A difference of 10.0%–12.5% for total word legibility and 6.0%–7.0% for total letter legibility were found as the MCID.
