Research Assignment
(Your name)
(Date of submission)
Instructor’s Name 1. Define the term “collective bargaining” and list and describe four issues that are mandatory components of a collective bargaining agreement.

Tips for success:

• Have a clear Introduction, Body, and Conclusion for each question.

• If I ask you to define something, please do not give me something from a dictionary. Be more creative than that.

• Make sure you follow the MLA formatting style. You should be familiar with this by now. Note: I prefer, so I required, the use of parenthetical citations (I hate to have to scroll to see your references)

• Make sure your source is credible. For example, do not give me anything you saw at Wikipedia.org – Wikipedia is a free-for-all site. Anyone can publish there, but these sources are not credible.

• Make sure you discuss the relevance and/or applicability (to the question) of the source material you are using (and citing) in support of your offering. Paraphrasing or summarizing is always a nice touch. Here's an example from a previous student's paper: "The May 2010 issue of EPSU (http://www.something.something) discusses the plight of French firefighters who took action to try to get the government to declare their jobs as dangerous and to agree to special retirement agreements. At the time of the writing of this article, the firefighters and the government were preparing for what would be sure to be upcoming demonstrations. The same May 2010 issue discusses the launch of opposition against the government due to job cuts. It is the French government’s intention to cut at least 15% or their workforce or at least 5000 jobs between now and 2011. This demonstrates to us that collective bargaining is not just an action that is taken here in the United States, but in almost any country where labor seeks not only to be gainfully employed, but to be employed under conditions that will allow them to grow and to prosper as individuals."

• Make sure you check, and double-check the hyperlinks you provide to me. A common error is to do a search using an online library service or database and include the hyperlink to the article you are using only to find out that when I or someone else clicks on it, you need a user name and password to get to the article. Make sure your hyperlink takes me directly to the article.

• Make sure you follow the directions I've included in the Research Assignment itself. I know what I asked you to do, how I asked you to do it, and when I asked you to do it. You should know that information as well.

• Plagiarism. Don't go there ~~ not even close to there. Know what it is, and know what it's not. Be aware that we online instructors get a feeling for your writing style by reading your conference thread postings. When the writing style in your paper is a clear departure from what you've shown me in the past, I get "curious". Do the work, and use your own words.

• Back up your work.

• Do not wait until the last minute to get started on this. Use your project management and time management skills. Know that as they say in the commercial "Life comes at you fast". Things happen, and it is rarely our fault. We don't always achieve our goals. If, at the time of the deadline (which is Sunday of week 6) you have not completed the entire assignment, then submit what have up to that time. Include a note at the beginning of your paper letting me know that you have not completed all you would have liked to do. Some credit is better than no credit.

• Make sure your next question is restated at the top of the next page. If you are using Word, and this was the last part of your answer to question 1, then at the space next to the last "g" in the word something (below), you would click on "Insert" from the menu bar, then "break", then "page break". Other word-processing programs have similar methods of achieving this.

Remember

According to MLA style, you must have a Works Cited page at the end of your research paper. All entries in the Works Cited page must correspond to the works cited in your main text. See http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/05/

2. List and discuss three U.S. laws that support collective bargaining, and three examples of employer unfair labor practices.

Notice that this question starts at the top of the next available page after all you have to offer for the Q1 has been completed.

Questions 3 and 4 and your Works Cited page must follow the same format – each starting at the next available page once the preceding question has been answered!

...In search of the competent project manager Crawford, L Project Management Program, University of Technology, Sydney, PO Box 123 Broadway NSW Australia 2007 As project management matures as a profession there is increasing international interest in the concept of project management competence. Demand for added value and the impact of the information age on work practices has meant that we are constantly required to deliver more for less with increasing emphasis on the competence to deliver value. Whether we recognise it or not, in every aspect of our lives, we are increasingly delivering results through projects. This places emphasis on competence of people who manage and contribute to projects. A major international research project is enhancing understanding of the project management role and of the environments in which projects are managed. It is providing clues in the search for the competent project manager. 1. Introduction Project management is often referred to as the ‘accidental profession’ [1]. It is also a profession in formation, and much of the attention given to project management competence reflects attempts to pin down, or better understand the evolving nature of project management and the role of the project manager. Although there has been focus on the search for the competent project manager, there is growing appreciation that projects will be delivered more effectively if there is synergy between the project management competence of individuals...

...Marketing Research 101 Introduction D Market Research For more information contact: uring the last meeting of the Market Research Working Group (MRWG) it was suggested that the volunteer members could use an overview or summary of marketing research terminology and methods. This paper is by no means a comprehensive view of marketing research, but rather a basic primer intended to familiarize members of the MRWG to basic marketing research concepts. What is Marketing Research? Marketing research is a systematic process that collects, analyzes and draws conclusions from data gathered from consumers, business owners, or other groups of interest. Types of Marketing Research There are different types of Marketing Research and each type has its place in attempting to answer questions and meet the needs of an organization. Marketing research can be broken down many ways. One of the most common is to group research into quantitative versus qualitative methodology. Qualitative Research Qualitative research is usually exploratory in nature and is useful for uncovering insights into research questions that may not be well defined or no previous research has been done in the area. Methodologies include focus groups, in-depth one-on-one interviews, observation, etc. Qualitative research is defined by: • • • • • Smaller sample sizes (i.e. < 30 respondents) Non-random sample (i.e. respondents chosen based on their willingness to attend) Less structured/Open-ended...

Project Management in Banks: a Case Study

...A Project Management approach to Service Delivery within the Financial Services Sector; A case study of CAL BANK 1.1 Background The competitiveness of service business is contingent, at least in part, on the design and configuration of quality service delivery and the value proposition inherent in such services (Frei and Harker, 1999; Johnston and Clark, 2005; Verma et al., 2002). Therefore, congruence high level of alignment between a service experience and value for money is crucial for success of all organizations. From this perspective, a study aimed at investigating how project management can be successfully applied to service firms (banks) to lead to quality service delivery for customers is highly justified, as customers are the life blood of any organization. Indeed, several empirical studies suggest that firms achieve higher levels of profitability and performance through successful implementation of project management (PM) (Sauser et al, 2009; Lockett et al, 2008; Chin, 2004; Atkinson et al, 2006; Alleman, 2008; Gallo and Gardiner, 2007; Fernandez and Fernandez, 2009). Moreover, project management has been proven to have the ability to enhance flexibility, remove bureaucracy and also to create room for adaptability (Gomes et al, 2008; Lockett et al, 2008; Lord, 1993). Similarly, the argument for providing quality service has far been advanced by many scholars both in marketing and management circles. For example, Heskett & Sasser, (2010) documents the importance...

...Marketing Research Project Types and Examples 1. Satisfaction Studies: Obtain measures of satisfaction for different attributes of products and services, and relate this to customer type or segment, experience, demographics etc. Data/Methodology: Satisfaction studies typically require a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches. At an early stage, qualitative research techniques such as focus groups or one-on-one customer interviews might reveal unexpected dimensions of customer dissatisfaction. Usually customer satisfaction measures and information on customer type are collected by use of a survey. A satisfaction survey frequently includes items dealing with importance and performance of various attributes, and some information on customer type (heavy/light user, experience and other segmentation variables). In addition to simple tabulation, analysis could include cross-tab and regression analysis to understand predictors of satisfaction. Are all segments equally satisfied? Why/why not? Is performance adequate on the most important attributes? Why/why not? EXAMPLE PROJECT: Research Purpose: Find areas of improvement in the order experience for an online retailer selling specialty dog chew-toys. Research Objectives: Using a sample of current customers, measure importance of key dimensions of the purchase experience, and current performance along these dimensions and relate these to purchase frequency, customer type and demographics. Possible Recommendations: Redesign the...

Non-Probability Sampling

...Programme name | Management | Module title | Survey Research Management | Module code | MN3121 | Local Resource Centre (where relevant) | School of Management | Date Submitted | 13/12/2013 | Word count (to include everything except the references and appendices) | 2108 | Nonprobability sampling in management research ESS has made a survey created to measure attitudes cross-nationally in Europe, using probability sampling. Measuring an attitude across countries is a tough job, but to successfully apply the methods of probability sampling too, seems close to impossible. This essay will look at the sample-problems that this survey faces, and how a non-probability sample can be successfully integrated. Before starting to analyse the survey, I would like to briefly explain what a sample is, and the main differences between the two sampling techniques. First of all the objective of most surveys or research projects is to obtain information about the parameters of a population. To do this a sample is collected representing a subgroup of the population selected for participation in the project. The sample characteristics are used to “make inferences about the population parameters”. (Malhotra, 2010: 370) Meaning that you by selecting a small representation of the population can tell something about the whole population. Non-probability sampling can be defined briefly as “Sampling techniques that do not use chance selection procedures, but rather rely on personal...

...Chapter 3 Research Design Introduction In this chapter you will learn about: • • • • • The building blocks of intelligence – which includes secondary as well as primary data. The applications for qualitative and quantitative research. How to match the research design to the research method. Things to look out for when choosing a quantitative research method. How a company used a range of different research designs to launch and track the success of a new product. Sources of market intelligence – secondary and primary data Every day companies make decisions without market research. In fact, the number of business decisions that are underpinned by formal market research is probably very small. This is not necessarily the result of cavalier management, taking decisions without due care and attention; it is most likely because the investment in market research is not judged to be necessary. There are four sources that management can turn to for intelligence that will help their business decisions. Before spending time and money on market research, managers will scan the quality of infor39 mation that sits underneath their noses in the company. This could be factual (such as sales figures, number of enquiries, lists of prospective customers etc) or it could be opinion (such as the views of the sales force). If these sources are considered reliable, there will be no need to look externally for the data. The internal sources could be considered suspect because they are biased...

Motivation

...changing world, without identifying the key indicators in the motivation of employees, their commitment towards the work cannot be achieved. Therefore, while I was going through the various topics suggested in the RAP guidelines provided by Oxford Brookes University, as soon as I came across this topic, I instantly decided to work on it for my research project after having discussed it with my mentor. As far as selection of the company is concerned, I felt that Coca-Cola being an international brand that has gained loyalty among the masses, could actually be of great interest to base my research on. Moreover, I personally knew a relative of mine who is currently an employee at Coca-Cola. He had told me that the company’s human resource department since the past few years has been doing a lot to increase employee motivation and commitment towards the organization. According to its official website, the company has a portfolio of over 3,300 products, among which the popular ones are Coca Cola soft drink, Sprite, Fanta, Diet Coke, Minute Maid juice, Aquarius mineral water and POWERADE energy drink. The company is currently striving to research on low calorie products and to substitute sweeteners in place of sugar considering the fact the people have now become more health conscious towards their diet. Moreover, Coca-Cola had revenue generation of $8.7 billion in the year 2010 and has targeted to achieve $500 million annual sales by the end of 2011 (Alazraki, 2010). Other than that...
