I concur with Bill McEwen’s article “ River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds” on the San Joaquin River Restoration Program. The San Joaquin River Restoration Program (SJRRP) planned on restoring the water flow to San Joaquin River from Friant Dam and its convergence with the Merced River, and revitalize the Chinook Salmon. McEwen has a much more superior expertise due to his 35 year career at Fresno Bee. In McEwen’s views, “ According to experts at UC Davis studying California’s rapidly declining salmon population; the fish ‘are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change.”(McEwen,2015) In other words, salmon is susceptible to warmer water caused by global warming. In fact, UC Davis ranks 1st in plant and animal science establishing a remarkable credible school. Stearn himself writes, “We have a powerful economic engine in regard to food supply that is appropriate to our region. We need more efforts to capture water - not divert it.”(McEwen,2015)We can’t solely base the restoration of the river on fish that won’t survive. California alone produces nearly half of US-grown fruit,vegetables and nuts. So, watering the fields for crops is more important on the grounds we have a powerful economy regarding food supply. McEwen states, “ No one even knows whether salmon can even survive in the lower San Joaquin, which has temperatures more suitable for bass and bluegill.”(McEwen,2015) To clarify, salmon is intolerant toward sweltering heat, whereas bass and bluegill can resist temperatures ranging from 39-90 degrees Fahrenheit. In essence, salmon can’t survive in no part of the San Joaquin, it’s the reality and the restoration of the river won’t help the salmon in no way possible. McEwen himself writes, “ Besides, scientific evidence suggest that California’s salmon problems have been caused in large part by oceanic conditions ”(mcewen,2015)This is to say that, CO2 is causing the oceans to become more acidic which is deliquescing primary food source of salmon. Also, the rise in sea level is submerging their habitat in which they make their transaction between ocean and river life
