“The struggle you go through today will give you the strength you need for tomorrow”
It was 6:00 me and my brother were watching TV and not doing much. Our dad offered us to go on a walk with him and our dog Sandi but we both replied with a simple shake of our heads and kept watching TV. I took quick a glance out my window to check on my dad then saw my dad and dog strolling along the sidewalk so I kept watching TV. Then heard a small bark but it didn’t really bother me, but then I heard someone scream.
“AHHH” get it away” the lady screamed with fear in her voice.
At first I just laughed a little but then I saw my brother with his eyes straight at me and his eyebrows moved down giving me a stern look like saying “Conor this isn’t a joke!” and I soon after figured out that this really wasn’t a joke because I looked out the window and saw one of the most horrific sights ever…. …show more content…
Then I saw my dad he made a fist and started pounding on Sandi’s head just trying to make her let go of the other dog’s neck or loosen her grip in the dog. The lady who had screamed was standing there not knowing what to do with a horrified look on her face (I had a horrified look on my face too but her face was much more horrified) I couldn’t pull my head away from the window but finally I couldn’t bare the sight any longer and pulled myself

A Critique on Blue Ocean Strategy

...and its associated opportunities in order to become the competitive one and the only one. I am very much agreeing with change and how one can change the rules and not compete head-on. We have to take a look at case by case models of change and understand the quantifiable rate of production. Let’s take for example: the smart car or electric car. If we all agree, it makes sense for the environment to accept a smaller “smart car”, and we achieve 100% adoption as consumers, what happens to the tracking industry and the delivery of our consumptive goods? Are we now willing to transport goods because we have to transport them into smaller containers with less power? Can you imagine a smart car next to a diesel 18 wheeler? Are we willing to sacrifice the safety of our families for the cost of the maintenance of the environment? People are fundamentally selfish and will not voluntarily create a sea change unless they are forced to do so or unless there is no choice. Companies can identify the need to change with the associated opportunities to become the only competition but without government intervention to drive the change at a local global effort, the results are depressing. Blue Ocean is a fantastic way to look at familiar environments in a new way to find competitive edge. Unfortunately, companies for their majority, have...

The Alchemist

...these things are up to you. Your reaction to these hardships could in fact make it or break it. This process of achieving your dreams is shown in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. Coelho’s novel was written to show the importance of dreams and having something to live for. In an interview with a magazine, Coelho explained, “The Alchemist is about -- well, it is a fable about the necessity we have to follow our dreams.” Coelho also added, “They will lose their jobs, they will start having problems, but it is the only choice because in any case, you have to pay a price for your dreams,” when he was asked about the problems that may evoke when people would start chasing their dreams. To Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist was written to show the self sacrifice that needed to be made to follow your dreams. The Alchemist outlines the adventures of Santiago, as young shepherd, as he travels from his homeland in Spain to Egypt in search of a treasure that appears in his dreams. During this journey he meets many people such as a wise king, a merchant in fear to live out his dreams, his true love and the Alchemist. On the way to the pyramids, he comes across numerous difficulties and temptations but moves on undeterred to fulfill his dreams. Santiago must go on a journey alone, sacrificing his sheep, his love, and comfort of his...

Adoration of the Lamb

...afterlife (Glover). The lower middle panel is the most intricate piece in this painting. The Lamb, located on top of the altar, carries a large amount of significance which this paper will go into detail. Christ is represented twice in this painting. Christ is shown as the Celebrating Priest in the upper level seated on the throne with his crown (Philip 61). The second representation of Christ is the Lamb of God being sacrificed on the altar. Its position on the hill indicates how the Host is elevated at the consecration. It serves a double purpose in that it shows the importance of the lamb being above everyone else (Philip 62). The sacrifice of the lamb echoes the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made dying on the cross. Since Jesus was also shown as the priest in this painting, that means that Christ is both committing and being a victim to the sacrifice (Philip 63). This is a central idea of the Church. It can be a confusing aspect having Jesus represented in two different ways. The Catholic faith asserts that...

Video Games Neil Gaiman

...Professor English 15 May 2015 Birth of the New American Gods: The Video Game God There are gods, old and new, among us and little do people know they are born by humans. The Video Game god is a new god because people spend time, money, and worship games in a new ways which allows this new god to exist. People can say it’s in the past where gods have been created through worship but the creations of these gods haven’t stop just because people just stop worshipping certain named deities, but only have been forgotten. These gods still live today and are still being created by human beings; in similar ways gods have been created in the past, but people subconsciously do it. A new god that can be seen today in our time can be the Video Game God, and this god has been created by people all over the globe. The Video Game God is a new god that people spent hours, days, even weeks on enjoying the entertainment, influences and effect the god has had on human, and what the god provides to his people. Before proving that there is a Video Game God that exists in the modern world, one needs to understand what a god truly is. After reading Neil Gaiman novel one can grasp a better understanding that religion isn’t needed for a god to exist and that, “Religions are, by definition, metaphors, after all: God is a dream, a hope, a woman, an ironist, a father, a city, a house of many rooms[…]” (Gaiman). In this part of the chapter people can understand how religion isn’t needed and is...

Marilyns Sacrifice

...Marilyn’s Sacrifice After reading a publication in the INB (Interstellar News Broadcasters) regarding the Stowaway Marilyn Lee Cross, Mr. and Mrs. Cross were furious with the writer of the article Mr. Narveson. They contacted Brian Di Felice (Mr. Narveson’s Manager) to have a conference call between the three parties. The Following conversation is a recording between Brian Di Felice, Jan Narveson, and Mr. and Mrs. Cross. Brian: Hello Mr. and Mrs. Cross, I have received your complaint. I have Mr. Narveson next to me who is willing to answer any questions regarding his publication in yesterday’s INB article. Parents: Mr. Narveson, we are furious with your interpretation of the events which happened upon EDS 34G11. We are appalled that you say Marilyn’s sacrifice was a “morally correct” action by the EDS pilot given the circumstances at hand. How can the sacrifice of an innocent person ever be morally correct? Narveson: There is our first discrepancy in the sacrifice of Marilyn, as I do not see Marilyn as truly, 100% innocent. Parents: How is our daughter not innocent? Truly you cannot believe that she deserved what had happened to her! Narveson: I do not believe that Marilyn deserved her gruesome fate, however she did enter the EDS willingly, with the knowledge that she was not permitted to board. She more than once admitted her guilt to Barton the...

Corn Mother

...was needed. Eventually, the humans had killed too many animals so there was starvation. Corn Mother who is the mother of all humans pitied her children and cried for them. She eventually asks her husband to kill her and tells her sons to drag her body all over the earth until her flesh peels off. After this was done, they were to bury her ones in the middle of her flesh and come back after seven moons. When they returned there was corn and tobacco. I feel that this sacrifice was the end of violence in the Penobscot tribe. This is because they didn’t have to hunt and kill animals anymore. This story also shows us how close the Penobscot were to the divine. They could go to the divine anytime that they wanted because the divine were basically their parents. The closeness is also not only on the side of the humans. The divine also care about the humans given the fact that Corn Mother sacrificed her life for theirs. The Penobscot have a great respect for the natural world. This is because of Corn Mother’s sacrifice. I believe that they have great respect for the natural world because they are fed by nature. The corn and tobacco are gifts from nature that sustain them and help them to flourish. Another possible reason is that their parents, Great Nephew and Corn Mother (First Mother) were created from nature. The humans were also indirectly created from nature since their parents...

Kite Runner Redemption

...guilt. Guilt can be sinful; it stains your conscience and ruins your morals. Although these actions are wrongful, they can be atoned to through sacrifice or purification. People find piece of mind in doing something that makes up for the cause of guilt and this is especially eminent in Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner. Although there are many ways to advocate to wrongful doing, through the main character Amir’s actions sacrifice was proven to be the most liberating act. Throughout the book, the main character, Amir, seeks redemption for his “…past of unatoned sins” (Hosseini, p. 1). These feelings of guilt arise at the beginning of his life, when his mother, Baba’s love, dies giving birth to him. From that point on, Amir strives to redeem himself because he feels he is responsible for her death: “Because truth of it was, I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn’t I?” (p.20). It is this guilt that Amir carries throughout most of his childhood and for which he tries to atone to with Baba’s love and affection: “Maybe he’d call me Amir Jan like Rahim Khan did. And maybe, just maybe, I would finally be pardoned for killing my mother” (p. 60). Amir competes against Hassan for the approval of his father and his willingness to sacrifice the relationship he had with Hassan shows the extent of his need to please and gain his father’s affection. When Amir wins the kite running competition...

Rikki Davi Character Analysis

...“I bring a lot to the table. I'm not talking about material things, but what I have to offer as a person - love and loyalty and all the things that make a good relationship.”-Jennifer Lopez. Defending somebody when nobody else does is true loyalty. Even Rudyard Kipling included it in his story,” He made sure he would be banged to death, and for the honor of his family.” Is the saying really true? This story all connected with us, because the loyalty shown in Rikki-Tikki-Tavi always came with a price. The theme of the fictional story Rikki-tikki-tavi by Rudyard Kipling is loyalty can have a big impact on your decisions. Rikki Tikki is a loyal character in this story. For instant,”He wanted all his strength and quickness ready, he must keep himself thin.”(para 34) This reflects, Rikki`s loyalty, because he`s reconsidering his `traditions` of snake-eating and opting to stay healthy for his family. This also entails Rikki is pushing aside his animal instincts of snake-eating and developing more human traits like loyalty. Secondly, “He made sure he would be banged to death, and for the honor of his family.”(para 58) This shows that Rikki would have enough loyalty to challenge Nag when the two cobras plotted against his family. This also conveys Rikki was prepared to die for his families safety and welfare. In conclusion, Rikki is a loyal companion throughout the story. Nagaina, another character in the story is also loyal. To begin with,” Nagaina spun clear round, forgetting everything...

The Rain Came

...Rain Came I think the village lives different from what we would consider the norm. The village has been in a drought for a while now and they really need water. So in the past, their ancestors would sacrifice on of their own to make it rain. For me this is a taboo. No one around me would see this as a way of life. He was a young man when he took the oath so that could have been a factor of him thinking that he would never have to come through with it. He had twenty children and Oganda was the only daughter that he loved very much. Also she will soon have to marry at a young age and leave his side. He feels that he needs to spent more time with her before she has to leave and also he wants to see her get married. Oganda made Labong’o a better chief and without her his spirit will vanish. On the other hand if he doesn’t go through with it would mean that the whole tribe would be sacrificed. The story says that he would be than putting the best interest of an individual above the society and dis obeying the ancestors. Also the Luo tribe would be wiped off the face of the earth. The story talks about how another lady had to sacrifice herself from going into the lake. It says that she is also a young lady and the village had rain coming down in torrents. The chief must sacrifice his only daughter for the village to have rain. You can imagine how the chief must feel to have his daughter go through with this. In the story he takes an oath “I will lay down life, if necessary, and...

Gift of a Magi

...Poverty, Love, and Each Other “The Gift of the Magi” remains one of the most recognizable and frequently read stories in American literature. During its time the tale was extremely popular. Today the story is considered juvenilia and has not garnered much serious critical attention. “The Gift of the Magi” initially appeared in one of O. Henry's best-known collection of stories, The Four Million, which was published in the late 1906. This story’s plot has two main characters on Christmas Eve. A young married woman named Della has cut and sold her long beautiful hair in order to gain enough money to purchase her husband a Christmas present. The present that she wants for her husband is a platinum chain for his pocket watch. However when her husband Jim returns he is stunned to see that she has cut her hair. ...religion and community centrism(Cruz 2012). Religion influenced the Indigenous peoples' entire lives, particularly their daily activities, sacrifices, geographic location and their calendars. Community centrism impacted major aspects of their lives such as their form of rule, and whether or not they became educated. Unlike the western european custom of going to church and worshiping on sundays, their religious values were reflected in daily activities through religious reminders and spiritual thought. (Cruz 9/10/2012). Religion and worshiping was a huge and important aspect of their lives. For example, their means of obtaining food did not just consist of growing the food, but it also included the blessing of their soil and praying. Indigenous people made observations about growing food, which their lives depended on; and Shaman priests would bless the soil their food grows on(Covarrubias 8/27/1012). During ceremonies, time was taken out to pray and give thanks for corn, water etc (cruz 9/5/2012). Another crucial part of their worship was sacrifice. The Mechica made sacrifices or offerings to the gods which was usually in the form of a ceremony. These rituals were performed by high priests on sacred days. A chalchihuatl was a blood sacrifice which meant that an individual would die, offering their life and blood to the gods. They chose to sacrifice blood because blood is pure and untouched and was seen as the highest and purest form of giving back. Their reasoning was that since they...

The Power of Sacrifice

...Topic: The Power of Sacrifice. Text: Genesis 22:2 “And he said take now thy son,thy only son Isaac whom thou lovest ,and get thee into the land of Moriah and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountain which I will tell thee of” Title: Power of Sacrifice. Introduction: From Genesis to Revelation the Bible speaks of sacrifice. There is plenty of proof in the bible that sacrifice brings power and lack of it of course, will cause us to walk a powerless Christian life. We must be willing to sacrifice time, sleep, food and all other comforts in order to advance the kingdom of God. Without sacrifice we will not see the power of God that belongs to us in the measure we should see it. Paul says in Romans 12 that God wants our bodies to be living sacrifices to Him. Sacrifice is something that costs, hurts, and doesn’t come easy. Sacrifice with other biblical giving is commanded by God. What is a Sacrifice? 1. Sacrifice is an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else. 2. It is offering to God, honor without looking back. 3. It is surrendering something to somebody without expecting a return .a possession as an offering to God or to a divine or supernatural figure What can we give as Sacrifice to God? As we have seen, Sacrifice means to give up things which we love and hold dear (2 Samuel 24 vs 24) The things may be tangible and concrete or intangible and abstract. Examples are: 1. Time. 2. Praises and...

Reflection Paper of the Happy Prince

...THE HAPPY PRINCE Literature study is a book consists of many useful short stories. Each of them is very beneficial for the reader. One of the stories in that book that caught my attention was “The Happy Prince”. This short story was written by Oscar Wilde in 1888. In this story, it talks about the generosity of a talking statue. I really love reading this book. In addition, I am going to analyze the whole story: a summary of the story, an analysis of a symbol of happy prince, and my idea toward the contribution of the happy prince toward his people. Happy prince was once a human whose life was full of exhilaration and happiness. He never gets to see what life like beyond that thick wall of his palace. When he died, they built him a status and put him up high in the middle of the town. There, he saw a lot of misery, starvation, and poverty. Next he made a friend with a swallow, whose friends are leaving to Egypt to escape the frozen season, and begged him to be his massager. The swallow continues to help the happy prince doing the charity job by talking the valuable stones and gold from the happy prince status—the happy prince status was made of god and rare sapphires. The little bird continues to take those priceless stuffs from happy prince status to help the poor until there were none left. Next, the winter strive, the swallow died because of the cold. Then, the major of the town order his servants to remove the happy prince status from his place since the status was not...
