Having been given the opportunity by my clinical educator to volunteer as a student physiotherapist for the Sanflippo’s Children’s Foundation, I was privileged to travel down to the great ocean road in Melbourne to provide physiotherapy treatments for 100 ultramarathon runners this year. The SurfCoast Century marathon allowed us to fundraise for medical research into Sanflippo syndrome in children. Sanflippo is a fatal, genetic condition that affects metabolism and results in severe damages to the central nervous system in children. Due to this extremely rare condition, there was initially lack of funding for research into medical treatments for this genetic disorder in children.
