...CASE: SM-153 DATE: 08/08/06 SAP AG IN 2006: DRIVING CORPORATE TRANSFORMATION Success can be seductive. It can trick us into focusing too rigidly on long-established patterns of thought. That’s why it is often so tempting to recycle yesterday’s ideas to form the guidelines and dogmas of tomorrow. I hope that we can use the right vision and strategy to avoid this trap. ⎯Henning Kagermann, CEO, SAP AG INTRODUCTION On a windy April evening in Walldorf, Germany, Henning Kagermann took a sip of his tea and picked up the 60-page document lying on his desk. Several months earlier, Kagermann, CEO of SAP AG, had tasked his Corporate Strategy Group with preparing a strategic analysis, informally nicknamed the “Sun-Tzu document” in deference to the legendary Chinese general. It outlined the strategic opportunities and challenges that SAP should expect to face between 2006 and 2010, and examined the prevailing forces shaping the enterprise software industry in 2006: technological change, consolidation, and shifting customer needs. Kagermann believed that emerging Internet-based technologies and standards known collectively as “Web services” soon would transform the $79.8 billion enterprise software applications industry, in which SAP held the leading market position.1 Although sales of SAP’s existing products had begun to rebound in 2004 after a multi-year slowdown, Kagermann had committed SAP to deploy new Web services-based technology on a massive scale by the end of 2007. The design phase of this paper will demonstrate the creation and process steps of what the ALT formulated based on the PIP discoveries. Inquiry Phase PB Family The PB family is made up of six facilities across the globe and is the third largest gelatin manufacturer in the world. Each PB facility thrives on creating value for customers at competitive prices and is committed to achieving the highest standards of product safety and quality. ...SAP software One of the big advantages of SAP software in general is that it is applicable to any business. For a small business, anywhere from 5-100 employees, the SAP software called Business One is best. There are numerous advantages, including saving money and being more efficient. Compared to other SAP software, it is more affordable and still works effectively. Smaller businesses would implement this software because it does not require a large IT staff to run it, and it takes 2-8 weeks to get it running. They can also run it off of the cloud, which gets rid of some of the hardware costs and space needed to use it. As for the benefits, Business One has many ERP features. It keeps track of all financial information and manages it for the small business. It cuts down on errors and it makes the entire financial process faster (Fertig, 2004). Overall, it allows businesses to make better, more informed decisions. Business One also helps keep track of inventory and production. This reduces costs and time by knowing exactly how much inventory is in the warehouse, and it gives the business more control in ordering and shipping products. When it comes to customers, Business One helps in multiple areas. Not only does it help with support after a sale has been made, Business One includes a Crystal Reports software which helps in gaining new customers. Businesses can analyze sales trends and opportunities, as well as asses the performance of individual departments with the software...

...Technology since it has been privatized by MICT Berhad and ATLAM had overhauled its Information Technology (IT) in year 2000.gain The system had not been functioned to produce financial statement. After knowing the weakness, ATLAM has two alternatives which is ACCPAC and Petra’s group-wide SAP. ATLAM has been asked to upgrade its accounting system with the Petra group-wide SAP system. Zulkifli as ATLAM’s finance manager need to critically assess the risks associated with the decision on whether to or not to implement SAP in ATLAM. Zulkifli has arranged a meeting to discuss the new system upgrade. He had invited Sani (Project Manager), Gopal (User Project Manager), Lim (User Representative) and Kamal (Functional Analyst) to discuss about implementing SAP in ATLAM. As it shown in the case, the first meeting have not come to a mutual agreement on whether to implement SAP in ATLAM as Lim has pointed out that implement ACCPAC is a cheaper option compared to SAP that would be incurred a huge cost for ATLAM as it will becomes a financial constraint and burden to ATLAM. In second meeting, Lim stated that the SAP is impractical in ATLAM as the the company don’t even have enough computer to operate SAP and some of the ATLAM staff...

...SAP for ATLAM Background It had been December 2001 and the management of ATLAM, a wholly owned organization of MICT Berhad, had been asked to upgrade its accounting system with the PERT group-wide SAP system. The cost of implementing SAP in ALTAM is one of the main concern. Apart from that, it had been more of whether ATLAM’s staff would be ready to embrace the new systems. The purposed of SAP system was scheduled to be phased in by 1 April 2002 i.e. the star of the financial year. Situation 1: Implementation of SAP system in ATLAM but parent company pays the cost ATLAM has to evaluate the decision to upgrade the current accounting system to the SAP system. Although it is critical to assess the risks associated with decision, ATLAM has to ensure the best possible outcome for the organisation. In order for better access of ATLAM’s IT facilities and the need for consolidation with PETRA’s servers to leverage group wide PETRANET network system, ATLAM need to consider implementing the SAP system for replacement of existing accounting system. Recommendation Due to some constraints that faced by ATLAM (timely and costly), it is recommended that the parent company of ATLAM pay for the SAP system. The SAP systems will be capitalized in the parent company’s book and depreciation will be calculated and recorded in their accounts. This cost will be incorporated in the group consolidated accounts and not the company accounts of ATLAM. Situation 2: Implementation of SAP system...
