If I should have a Daughter
Here I introduce Sarah Kay, her discussion was over “If I should have a daughter”. During the first part of her talk she went over the fact how her mother would point at her and calls her “point b” what this means is that her mother wanted to just label them as no names and teach them that “she already knows them because she is the one that raised them”. Her mother taught her that even though life would fight against her and place her in a “rock and a hard place” that she needed to get up and try again. Although sometimes it would fight against you trying to get back up you just need to get up and try again till you succeed. Then Sarah Kay goes on to explain when she has a daughter she will explain to her that she will not be the only one to her …show more content…
My favorite line would have to be the fact she tells her daughter to “lift her head up and smell for the smoke and follow it back to the burning house where she will find a boy and maybe just maybe save him unless he is the one that started the fire then she would try to save that boy.” Another point that she would teach her daughter would be “to look at the world through a microscope and see that there will always be days like this” what I believe that she means by this is there is days of failure and you can only go on and fix these things if you keep trying to move on and forward. The three steps she would entrust and train her daughter would be “Step one, I can I can,” “Step two, I will I will,” “Step Three, realization.” These three steps she is telling her daughter always tell yourself that you can, never let anyone or anything get in your way as you know for a fact you can do what you put your mind to. Once you understand that you can tell yourself that you will do what you say you can, by this you will set forth and go out there and do it instead of trying, and last by realizing that you have just set forth into a world that judges you by what you can and will

...SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas...

The World in 2008

...time the biggest contributor to global growth) along with India and other emerging markets that will shine. Another focus of attention will be climate change. As China replaces America as the world’s biggest producer of greenhouse gases, serious efforts on global warming depend on the serious involvement of those two countries. If 2007 was the year when this rose to the top of the global agenda, in 2008 people will expect action. It is striking that green is a theme that links all the contributions from political leaders in this volume, whether at the city level (Michael Bloomberg), the national level (Felipe Calderón, Nancy Pelosi, Nicolas Sarkozy) or the supranational level (the UN’s Ban Ki-moon, ASEAN’s Surin Pitsuwan). The politicians have talked the issue up; will they now let people down? A third preoccupation will be geopolitical risk. The conventional wisdom is that America is...
