The Sarcee Tribe
The Sarcee tribe who used to be called the Tsuu T’ina live near the city of Calgary in the Canadian province of Alberta. They were located on the upper courses of the Saskatchewan and Athabaska Rivers of Alberta before moving south to the Great Plains near the end of the 17th century.
The lifestyle of Sarcee indians consisted of hunting, gathering, growing tobacco; which was the only crop they could grow, and fighting with Cree. The Sarcee had a constant state of war with the Cree who drove them westward. The success sought refuge from Blackfoot as a result of the conflicts with the Cree. He was the chief of the Sarcee Indians from 1947 to 1953. He started a band farm where the Sarcees cleared and broke 200 acres of land and together learned the skills necessary to farm it. Also, he encouraged the children to get a good education. He fought for the rights and benefits for his people. From the effects of settlers, David Crowchild still kept his people happy and from him they adapted more techniques and opportunities such as being able to get a good education. He also encouraged to boys on the reserve to try new things such as baseball and hockey. David Crowchild allowed the Sarcee Indians to be recognized by the government that some tribes don’t usually get the chance to have. The Europeans did not really affect the Sarcee territorial wise because most of the europeans settled on the east coast. Later on a disease of smallpox caused by the settlers swept westward and the Sarcee caught it causing some indians to die.
