An in media res opening wrenches the reader into the heart of the action and encourages dramatization. By beginning a story in media res, the author adds interest to the story. As the reader does not know what events lead up to the start of the narrative, it raises many questions- hooking the reader. In “Saturday Climbing”, Valgardson opens the plot in media res, with the narrator hanging off of a cliff. By choosing to enter the narrative in the heart of the action, the author bypasses the antecedent action and launches right into the action. However, antecedent action is provided throughout the story with flashbacks. For example, the father in the story remembers when his daughter would come home smelling of marijuana and how helpless he felt in that situation. From this point onwards, Barry’s perspective on Moria changes. In this reversal of outcomes, Barry no longer views his daughter as a child who needs to be protected, but as an adult who can take care of her own life. In this moment, Barry brings light to what he has known all along, but refused to acknowledge- that Moria is able to take care of herself. With conflicting thoughts, Barry questions whether or not he should let her go; however, he accepts that she is ready for more responsibility, and decides to give her the freedom she deserves. Nonetheless, Barry still keeps a careful eye on his daughter, ready to be there when she needs him. This perfectly exemplifies what a parent/ child relationship should be like, where the child is able to freely explore the world but watching in the background as a silent guardian are the parents, ready to help and support them whenever they may need
