Saudi Arabien ist nicht der einfachste Ort in der Welt für westliche Unternehmen um dort Geschäfte zu machen. Auf der einen Seite bietet das ölreiche Königreich viele Gelegenheiten für Unternehmensgeschäfte. Westliche Baufirmen haben lange eine Rolle beim Errichten von Infrastruktur im Königreich gespielt. Westliche Marken von Coca-Cola, Nike und McDonalds bis Body Shop, Next, Benetton haben dort eine signifikante Präsenz. Östliche Luftfahrtunternehmen wie Boeing und Lockheed haben eine beträchtliche Anzahl an Flugzeugen an Saudi Arabien über die Jahre verkauft. Markt der Saudis ist einer der größten im mittleren Osten. Für mehr als ein Jahrzehnt hat die Regierung signalisiert dass sie offener gegenüber fremden Investitionen in bestimmten Sektoren der Wirtschaft ist obwohl Öl und Gas Gewinnung immer noch für staatliche Unternehmen reserviert ist. Auf der anderen Seite ist Saudi Arabien ein historisch konservatives Land wo ein großer Anteil der Bevölkerung sich die religiösen Werte und alten Traditionen der Region zu bewahren wünscht. Das läuft auch in den Geschäftssektor über. Kultur des Landes wurde durch eine Kombination von islamischen und beduinischen Traditionen geformt. Als 1744 die Wüstennomaden die arabische Halbinsel bevölkerten, schloss bei einer Oase wohnende al Saud Klan einen Pakt mit Ibn Abd-al-Wahhab. Wahhab war ein einflussreicher islamischer Wissenschaftler der es anstrebte den Islam zu reinigen und ihn zu seinen traditionellen Wurzeln zurück zu führen durch strenge Einhaltung der wie er glaubte ursprünglichen Prinzipien des Islam wie sie im Koran ausgedrückt wurden. Im Austausch für das Beschützen von Wahhab und den Folgen seiner Lehren bot Wahhab seine Unterstützung der ambitionierten al Saud Familie an.140 Jahre später vereinigte die Familie die nomadischen Wüstenstämme unter ihrer Herrschaft und 1922 war das saudische Königreich geboren.
Die strenge Wahhab Sekte des Islam hat heute immer noch einen starken Einfluss auf die Saudi Kultur. Das ist etwas was sichtbar gegenüber der Reisenden ist. Zum Beispiel schließen Läden und Restaurants zu den fünftäglichen Gebetszeiten und viele Restaurants eingeschlossen westliche wie zum Beispiel McDonalds haben separate Essensbereiche für Männer und Frauen. Frauen in Saudi Arabien dürfen kein Auto fahren, Boot segeln, Flugzeug fliegen oder draußen auftauchen mit entblößtem Haar, Handgelenken und Knöcheln. Etwas das westliche Firmen im Hinterkopf behalten müssen, wenn sie im Land oder Saudis selbst in anderen Ländern Geschäfte machen. In der Tat Frauen die alleine reisen benötigen allgemein ein Regierungswächter oder einen Berechtigungsschein. Das Festhalten der Saudis an den Werten des Islams hat zum Anstieg von antiamerikanischen Stimmung geführt welche sich nach der amerikanisch geführten Inversion einer anderen muslimischen Nation, dem Irak erhöhte/steigerte. Kulturelle Solidarität spiegelt sich selbst in Konsumentenboykotts der amerikanischen Produkte wieder. Beunruhigender als diese Boykotts sind die Terroristenangriffe gegen westliche Auswanderer in Saudi Arabien während der vergangenen 10 Jahre. Die wahrgenommenen Risiken Geschäfte im Königreich zu machen haben sich signifikant erhöht. Beduinische Traditionen waren ebenso stark wie islamischen Werte beim Formen der saudischen Kultur. Werte, die den stolzen Nomaden wichtig waren und sie zu befähigt haben in ihrer haschen Wüstenlandschaft zu überleben, können immer noch in der modernen saudischen Gesellschaft gefunden werden. Sie schließen Loyalität, Status, Hervorhebung von zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen, die Idee von ungefähren statt der genauen Zeit und ein Widerwille gegen jegliches Verhalten das untergeordnet oder unterwürfig angesehen werden könnte, ein (inkl. Handarbeit).
Die beduinischen Traditionen reflektierend machen Saudis oft Geschäfte nur nach dem Vertrauern sich wirklich bewährt hat – ein Prozess, der gemessen an westlichen Standards eine große Anzahl von persönlichen Treffen erfordert. Saudis mögen sich darüber ärgern in Geschäftsentscheidungen gedrängt zu werden, sie bevorzugen es Diskussionen in einer entspannten Art und Weise zu führen etwas das es westliche Personen mit ihrer Bindung zu präzisen statt ungefähren Zeiten anstrengend finden dürften. Geschäftstreffen dürften solange dauern weil viele Saudis ein „offenes Büro“ unterhalten und werden ein Treffen unterbrechen um andere Geschäfte durchzuführen. Das kann auf eine beduinische Tradition zurückgeführt werden, bei der alle Stammesmitglieder das Recht haben ihre Anführer ohne Termin zu besuchen und zu ersuchen. In Anbetracht der kulturellen Wichtigkeit die dem Status anhängt, werden saudische Führungskräfte nicht gut reagieren, wenn eine fremde Firma eine junge unerfahrene Führungskraft sendet, um ein Geschäft abzuschließen. Loyalität gegenüber Familie und Freunden ist eine starke Kraft und Jobsicherheit und Fortschritt dürfte auf Familien und Freundschaftsverbindungen basieren statt oder zuzüglich bewiesener technischer oder führender Kompetenz. Abendländer könnten das negativ als Vetternwirtschaft auslegen. Aber das reflektiert eine nomadische Kultur wo Vertrauen in Familie und Stamm über alles andere gestellt wurde. Saudische Führungskräfte werden sich auch mit Familie und Freunden beraten bevor sie Geschäftsentscheidungen treffen. Ihre Meinungen dürften mehr Gewicht haben als die von Experten die sie nicht genauso gut kennen. Der beduinische Widerwille gegen untergeordneten Arbeiten hat ein chronisches Arbeitsproblem im Königreich geschaffen und fremde Firmen werden schnell entdecken dass es schwer ist Saudis zu finden, die Handarbeit oder grundlegende Dienstarbeiten ausführen. Folglich leben aktuell 6 Mio. Personen fremder Nationalitäten in Saudi Arabien. Diese Auswanderer die primär aus anderen muslimischen Nationen wie Pakistan oder Indonesien stammen verrichten viele der untergeordneten Berufe die Saudis geringschätzen / verachten. Obwohl die Öleinnahmen dieser sozialer Schichteneinteilung möglich gemacht haben sieht die saudische Regierung dies als potenzielles langfristiges Problem an.
