“For there exists between the two as great a difference as between savage and cruel races and the most merciful, between the most intemperate and moderate and temperate and, I might even say, between apes and men.” Sepulveda makes explicit points through his whole excerpt, with reputation, that the Indians are barbaric, half-men, not capable of learning, and in-human. He believes that the Spanish are superior to the Indians and should be able to rule over them as they please to show them the right way of living as they believe to be the only way. Sepulveda uses the observations he makes of the Indians as his justification towards his believes and arguments. He observes that “…these half-men. In whom you will barely find the vestiges of humanity, who not only do not possess any learning at all, but are not even literate or in possession of any monument to their history…nor do they have written laws, but barbarian institutions and customs.” He makes clear statements that he believes the Indians have no “proof of human cleverness” and are just mere dirt on the bottom of the shoes of all humanity.
Las Casas claims a different central argument, one that is quite the opposite of Sepulveda. He claims that “the Indian race is not that barbaric, nor are they dull witted or stupid. They are so skilled in every mechanical art that with every right they should be set ahead of all nations of the known world on this score.” He believes that the Indians should be treated just as the Spanish are treated. Casas supports this argument by calling out at Sepulveda saying “[do you] think that the war of the romans against the Spanish was justified in order to free them from barbarism? Did the Spanish wage an unjust war when they vigorously defended themselves against them?” which reviles that Sepulveda’s ideas are merely irrational for even his society. Feeling as if the Spanish society in some aspects is exactly like the Indians, so what makes theirs so justified and the Indians seen as inhuman. He closes with how he truly views the Indians “For they are docile and clever, and in their diligence and gifts of nature, they excel most peoples of the known world…”
After stepping in to the view point of both Sepulveda and Casas, I find that Sepulveda’s argument is more compelling all though I do not agree with it. When is expressing his point of you he uses things like strong adjectives, repetition and a strong tone. I do however not agree with his views of the Indians. He claims that because they don’t do things the way he was taught to do them that they are wrong. He is too closed minded towards his views on Indians. Casas is more open to allowing the Indians to thrive as who they are with the exception of converting to Catholic religion, this expectation I do find to be a little close minded because, the Indians have their own religion that they believe to be the correct way of doing things just like Catholics, Muslims, and etc. I do agree with all of Casas’ claims, but I think that they should be able to express their own religion freely, those who would like to convert have that choice but those who do not wish the same are not forced to. Overall Casas is more open minded towards the Indians customs which is what I more strongly agree with.

...1) Online auctions: We believe it’s high time that we embrace the technology and make a transition to internet auctions. Develop an online platform through which growers can sell their products and buyers can purchase them. Both of them will be charged a 0.1 % of transaction amount. This will not only bring in additional revenue but also make the whole process of buying and selling a lot easier. These are the financials involved. We estimate that online portal will cost us around $3 million. With the revenue that we will generate from it, cost of portal will be covered in 341 days. 2) Service Customization As per the recent trend, many clients don’t want full range of auction services. Hence sometimes they bypass auctions and directly contact growers. Taking this into account, we have decided to offer clients what they want. Auctioneers will offer services in the form of bundles. Clients can customize their bundles as per their needs. 3. Situational Analysis 3.1. A Brief History of the Indian Motorcycle

...A Brief History of Indian Motorcycle America's love for the motorcycle began in 1900 with bicycle racer George M. Hendee and engineering wizard Carl Oscar Hedstrom. In 1901, the partners unveiled their first creation, the 1901 Single. The trade name chosen for their innovative machine would signify "a wholly American product in pioneering tradition". The name was Indian. 1910-1919 By 1911, Indian riders hold every American speed and distance record. In 1914, over 3,000 employees work on a 7-mile long assembly line in Indian's 1-million square foot Springfield, Massachusetts plant. Racing activities are suspended in 1916 as the company supplies the war effort with 41,000 machines. 1920-1929 In 1923 the company is renamed Indian Motocycle Company, dropping the "r" in "motorcycle". It's a decade of growth for the Indian model line, starting with the revolutionary 1920 Scout and followed by the 95-mph Chief, the even more powerful Big Chief, the lightweight Prince, the awesome 4-cylinder Four. The 1928 101 Scout becomes the machine of choice for "wall of death" stunt riders. 1930-1939 The Art Deco era hits the Indians adorned in a full range of Duco colors, two-tone designs, pinstriping, and decals. Two new lightweight models debut in 1932, the Motoplane and the Pony Scout. "Iron Man" Ed Kretz, aboard a Sport Scout, laps the entire field in his win at the 1937 inaugural Daytona 200. With the onset of World War II in 1939, the focus again shifts to providing the...

Andrew Jackson

...should be a representative of all the people. Andrew Jackson played a large part in shaping our democracy today. (Andrew Jackson, 2013) Andrew Jackson played a vital role in the shaping of the United States modern democracy. Many opponents of Jackson believe that he should not be on the $20 dollar bill because of his decisions towards Native Americans and the fact that he owned several hundred slaves. Although these are true facts regarding Andrew Jackson I don’t feel as though they are reason enough to remove him from the $20 dollar bill. We have to think about the time frame that Andrew Jackson was elected president in. During this time slavery was not against the law and was not uncommon. Yes, Andrew Jackson played a large role in the Indian removal act but again this was not uncommon during the era that Andrew Jackson was President. Is it right to say a President was a bad president because he was following the social norm of his time? Although Andrew Jackson had several controversies surrounding his Presidency he still was considered to be a successful...

Indian Camp

...Indian Camp - by Ernest Hemingway The title doesn’t say much about the story. The title is very short, simple, and already now, we’re seeing examples of the iceberg technique. The iceberg technique is, when the author only writes about 10% of the essentials in the story. The reader has to read the last 90% between the lines. I think another reason why the title is so simple, might be that the whole story is based on Nick’s story. He chose a title that would fit into Nick’s world. Nick is just a little kid in this story, which is seen by how he sits in his father’s arms for comfort. As a little kid, a title with much meaning and a lot of complicated words doesn’t make much sense. A reason why Ernest Hemingway chose to let the title be as if it was Nick’s choice, might be that Ernest Hemingway identifies himself with Nick. Hemingway’s father was also a doctor, so he had a lot of experiences, maybe familiar to the one we hear about in the story. It is seen that Nick appears a lot in Ernest Hemingway’s stories. In every story Nick grows older and the title’s complexity also grows. We see Nick in different situations from different perspectives in every story. When I compare the introduction to the ending, I’m thinking about the change that Nick goes through. For instance, on the way to the camp in the boat, Nick is sitting in his father's arms. On the way back, Nick sits on the opposite end of the boat. The fact that Nick sits across from his father in the boat on...

Rupee Depreciation

...1. Indian currency (INR) has depreciated close to 22% in the last 1 year. In the article we will try to study the concerns of a country facing depreciating currency, the factors that led to this depreciation and the measures government can take to stabilize the situation. Most importantly we will see if global economic uncertainty rides over all the other domestic factors to determine strength of a currency especially in developing economies. Why don’t we need a depreciating INR? The persistent decline in rupee is a cause of concern. Depreciation leads to imports becoming costlier which is a worry for India as it meets most of its oil demand via imports. Apart from oil, prices of other imported commodities like metals, gold etc will also rise pushing overall inflation higher. Even if prices of global oil and commodities decline, the Indian consumers might not benefit as depreciation will negate the impact. The depreciating rupee will add further pressure on the overall domestic inflation and since India is structurally an import intensive country, as reflected in the high and persistent current account deficits month after month, the domestic costs will rise on account of rupee depreciation. Exchange rate risk also drives away foreign investors which in turn depreciates the local currency. Indian Rupee is currently caught in this vicious cycle; it will have to find a stable level to regain investors’ confidence. The depreciating rupee has serious effects on the external debt...

The great Indian mathematician Aryabhata   (476-529) wrote the Aryabhatiya ─ a volume of 121 verses. Apart from discussing astronomy, he laid down procedures of arithmetic, geometry, algebra and trigonometry. He calculated the value of Pi at 3.1416 and covered subjects like numerical squares and cube roots. Aryabhata is credited with the emergence of trigonometry through sine functions. Around the beginning of the fifteenth century Madhava (1350-1425) developed his own system of calculus based on his knowledge of trigonometry. He was an untutored mathematician from Kerala, and preceded Newton and Liebnitz by a century. The twentieth-century genius Srinivas Ramanujan (1887-1920) developed a formula for partitioning any natural number, expressing an integer as the sum of squares, cubes, or higher power of a few integers. ...By: Priya Jashnani Report Highlights: The first foreign quick service and casual dining restaurant brands entered the Indian market nearly 20 years ago. At the time, Indians rarely ate out and many wondered how the restaurants would overcome supply chain challenges and opposition to foreign investment. There are now an estimated 43 foreign restaurant brands operating 1,900 outlets across India. The number of home-grown chains is also rising as Indian firms adopt franchising or chain models to meet growing consumer demand for the dining-out experience. The rising number of restaurants does not present a significant opportunity for imported food products given relatively high tariffs and import restrictions on key products, but restaurants are introducing new cuisines and changing consumer tastes and preferences, a trend that could result in long-term opportunities for exporters. This report provides an estimated census of foreign and domestic casual and quick service restaurant brands operating in India. Things Have Changed Over the Past 20 Years It has been nearly 20 years since the first foreign quick service and casual dining restaurant chains and franchises opened in India. The initial opening was met with a mixture of anti-globalization opposition and consumer curiosity regarding how the restaurants would adapt their menus and operations to the Indian market where many consumers are vegetarians or do not eat beef. At the time,...

Comic Market

...erstwhile France), Archie and Commando (war stories of World War II) etc. A costly product for an average Indian, these comics were rather available to the children of the wealthy. The change came in the mid ’60s when a leading newspaper publication house of India launched Indrajal Comics. It was the first serious effort directed towards the evolution of comic culture in India. Well within the buying capacity of middle class children, Indrajal Comics made foreign comic heroes like “Phantom- the ghost who walks”, Mandrake the magician, and Flash Gordon household names in India. The immediate success of Indrajal Comics gave a further boost to the indigenous comic industry and in 1967 came the educational comics series called Amar Chitra Katha (Immortal Picture Stories) by Anant Pai, who is also considered the father of Indian comics. A welcome change, Amar Chitra Katha effected a fusion of the rich treasure of folk tales and exploits of mythical and legendary characters in comics. Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualised all of these and wrote the scenarios for most of them. With over 70 million copies sold in the last 40 years these comic books are regarded as internationally successful. Manan Kumar Most Indian children have grown up with Amar Chitra Katha’s vast and rich treasury of Indian folk tales, the brave exploits of mythical and legendary characters—from Birbal’s witty and lively...

India has over 13.25 lakh active military personnel compared with China's 22.55 lakh troops.   China's Air Force has 9,000 aircrafts with 2000 fighter planes. The Indian Air Force has 3,000 airplanes with 790 fighter planes. China's combat power is guaranteed through its fleet of Russian Sukohi-30 MKK and indigenously built J-10 fighters.   The Indian Air Force, on the other hand, has French built-Dassault Mirage 2000s and Russian Sukohi-30 MKI as the best aircrafts in its combat fleet. No indigenous fighters or aircrafts have been deployed by India so far.   The Indian Navy is the world's eighth largest navy with a with a fleet of 145 vessels consisting of missile-capable warships, advanced submarines, the latest naval aircrafts, and an aircraft carrier in its inventory. It is experienced both in combat and rescue operations during wartime and peace, as seen from its wars with Pakistan in 1971, and  the  Tsunami that struck in December 2004.   In comparison, China's Navy with its fleet of 284 vessels is quantitatively larger but lacking in actual war experience, which could undermine its strategic capability. China currently has no aircraft carriers in its naval fleet but is slated to build and induct an aircraft carrier by 2010. In strategic nuclear defence and delivery...
