Chiapas has very high rates of mortality of women during childbirth. If they had the healthcare they needed these deaths can be prevented. There are short supply of healthcare workers and trained midwives. Blood loss is the top reason for maternal deaths. As we know, Chiapas is poor and individuals do not have the transportation to get to the hospitals. This leads to in home births. There are many influences and factors that prevent women from receiving proper healthcare and access such as culture, environment or lack of income. According to The New York Times (2013), Sergio Castro is located in the rural mountains of Chiapas. He knows several languages and aids in healing people, building schools and creating water treatment systems. Sergio taught himself how to heal and treat various wounds. He treats 100 cases a week. People either go to his clinic or he personally visits patients at their homes. He is the primary health care provider for those in his area. Sergio is not employed by anyone, but does this work on his own and glorifies God for being able to share this gift to help care for others. He heals the poor people who have different severity of wounds and injuries and also provides hospice to those who are dying. It is amazing on the amount and good quality of healthcare he provides to the indigenous with his limited resources and materials. He does not charge a single penny to his patients and even refuses to accept money from them when he is offered it. His work is funded on donations usually internationally. He also has a Mayan museum where he raises funds for healthcare; he is depended on tourists or volunteers to help financially or dedicate their time. Sergio has brought food to patients’ home when needed. This gives them peace of mind in order for the person to heal properly and comfortably. By doing this, patients do not have to worry about their work and how they are going to feed their families. Sergio is a caring man and makes his patients feel at ease at each visit. On top of that, after treating his patients he makes sure to discuss the aftercare with them. Education is extremely important in healthcare. This will help the patients heal fast and prevent any future injuries (The New York Times
