The difference the story focusses on is the difference between different cultures, ethnicities and individual rights which emerges from these differences. The story takes place in Nigeria with Mr Ugwu who is a Christian Igbo, which is an ethnic group in Nigeria. Because of Mr Ugwu’s job he has been forced to move from Lagos to the bush, which geographically is a step down in the social hierarchy. The bush is a place where the Hausas are the dominant ethnicity and rain is one of the rarest things you will see. Saving Mr Ugwu is a short story by Lin Anderson. The point of view in the story is a third person narrator and Mr Ugwu is the main character whom is followed by the reader. The reader gets to know Mr Ugwu’s thoughts and feelings. Mr Ugwu is also the only person that we are able to characterize, because he is the only person that the reader receives enough knowledge about to make a characterization of. Mr Ugwu is a Christian Igbo who works for the Baturi. The Baturi makes Mr Ugwu the scapegoat as they make him deliver the low payment to the Hausas for working. Despite of this Mr Ugwu appreciates his job and his employer. The appreciation he gives his work and employer can be seen in the following quotation from the text, “The company has been good to him, he reminds himself. Good to hisfamily. He is a company man. ...Saving Mr Ugwu is a short story written by Lin Anderson. The story takes place in Nigeria which is a country in Africa. The capital of Nigeria is Lagos and the Ugwu family lived there, but they moved to a more uncivilized part of Nigeria the bush because Mr Ugwu got a job there. Mr Ugwu is native though he identifies himself with Western men. He comes from the civilized part of Nigeria. He is well educated. He went to the British school in Lagos and travelled to London after his graduation and stayed there for a year and he is an accountant and it pays well. He accepts the new job even though his wife does not want him to take is “You are not a bushman, she said” but Mr. Ugwu feels he need to accept the job because he feels he has a responsibility towards the company because it is good to him and his family “When the company tells him to go somewhere, he is not in a position to argue”. He likes mentioning he has expensive things like his spacious Lagos bungalow and his crisped white European cotton shirt which emphasizes he is a civilized man. He also has a condescending attitude towards other natives” He is resented, oh not by the Baturi!... He gets on well with Europeans…. No, he sighs, it is the Hausa who resent him” even though he is native himself. The lack of thought and focus on materialism and him being a civilized man make him appear superficial. Mrs Ugwu represents the urbanized native bourgeoisie. She did not want to leave Lagos and she does not like the new place...

...Saving Mr. Ugwu Ethnic disparity has caused innumerable conflicts, and are to be seen everywhere. Even today, ethnic minorities are being oppressed and discriminated against their deviant skin color and behavioral norms and traditions. In fact, the conflicts are not necessarily between a nation and its immigrants, but might as well be rooted in old enmity between ethnical groupings living on the same territory. This kind of hatred is the underlying idea behind Lin Anderson’s short story Saving Mr. Ugwu written in 2012. The short story begins in medias res as the reader is thrown into Mr Ugwu’s new bungalow which lies in the land of Hausa or in the bush (l. 34) as Mrs Ugwu describes the place. Mr Uwgu feels loyal and grateful to the company he works for, which is why he is willing to leave his beloved, affluent Ibo-home in Lagos, which is very regrettable for his wife. Due to the historical facts, the two ethnic groups, Ibo and Hausa, are old enemies, as they have combated each other during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). Mrs Ugwu abhors the Hausa-people and misses Lagos. Lagos is, with a population of 21 million, the new biggest city in Africa, and a result of the African urbanization which probably has made the family’s wealth possible. Lagos is the center of Nigeria’s economy and has many millionaires, but, like many other big cities, two thirds of Lagos’ population are slum dwellers: “The boy’s eyes are half shut as he wipes the table, sweeping the marauding ants...

...Analytical essay – “Saving Mr Ugwu” In historical context, Africa has always been a great market for slavery, and especially western countries like France and Great Britain have exploited that in the past through their colonization of the continent. Although it might be popular thinking that slavery organized by western countries has been abolished many decades ago, it is not necessarily true. Modern slavery in Africa has just had a slight change in character since then. This short story deals with the white man’s continuous oppression and exploitation of black people and their labour force. Furthermore the text thematizes deeply rooted historical conflicts between whites and different black ethnicities within Nigeria. The short story”Saving Mr Ugwu” is written by the Scottish author Lin Anderson. The story takes place in Nigeria, a former British colony, and mostly focuses around Mr. Ugwu and his family who was forced to move from Lagos to the Nigerian Bush because of his job. Mr. Ugwu is an Ibo and is born in the former capital of Nigeria, Lagos. Ugwu works for a big western sugarcane company, and manages the pay checks of the workers who harvest the sugarcanes. These workers mostly belong to another ethnic group, the Hausa. The text gives us the impression that some sort of hierarchy exist amongst the different Nigerian ethnicities and the few white men who live in the bush. “Mr Ugwu thinks once again, how lazy and dirty these Hausa people are”(S2, L59) This hierarchy...

The novel presents us to concerns such as individual rights between ethnicities, and contains themes such as imperialism, racial division and human rights. Mr. Ugwu is from Lagos and is from the igbo race, which is one of the more occurring tribes in Nigeria. Mr. Ugwu and his family have been through some hectic changes recently, because of Mr. Ugwu’s job. They have been forced to move into the bush against their will. He keeps telling himself that “The company has been good to him” He does that to remind himself that although the changes, he has to be thankful that he has a job, that he has an income and the fact that him and his family can live an exclusive life not many from his tribe can. Mr. Ugwu seems to be a man who always has worked hard for his money, but it also seems that he is a man who is privileged in many ways. Mr. Ugwu has a gardener that takes care of his wife’s flowers, and a houseboy that does several tasks in the house such as cooking him breakfast. “The kitchen boy has made him hot sweet tea and sliced bread” …”His master’s breakfast” – This quote says a lot about how the social structure is in Nigeria, there is a clear hierarchy which makes it irrelevant whether you are a Hausa, or an Igbo. However his wife still tries to remind him several times in an attempt...
