Introduction
1.1 Brief Company Overview

Starbucks is the world’s #1 speciality coffee retailer with more than 20,000 stores n 65 countries (See Appendix G). It operates an estimate of 8,800 of its shops, while licensing and franchises operate the remainder of the stores. The company also owns Seattle’s Best Coffee, Torrefazione Italia coffee brands, Teavana, Tazo, Evolution Fresh, and La Boulange (SCC 2014). Starbucks offers consumers various products including: coffee, handcrafted beverages, merchandise, fresh food, and consumer products of coffee and tea and ready-to-drink (RTD) goods (SCC).
1.2 Speciality Coffee Industry and Starbucks Coffee Supply Chain

The speciality coffee industry has seen drastic growth with increase in sales between the 1980s and 1990s. A great number of coffee specialists believed that differentiated coffee supported by the speciality industry would continue to expand at a faster rate than conventional coffees. However, by 2005, the actual definition of speciality in the U.S. refined and included less quality and flavoured coffees (Blumenthal 2008). The coffee bean product is exported globally from countries in East Africa, Pacific Rim and Latin American.

The security I am discussing today is Starbucks (SBUX) common equity (SBUX also has corporate bonds). Starbucks Corp. is a seller of coffee, tea, and related products and beverages. Starbucks is a retailer, a licensor, and a wholesaler, which are all completely different kinds of businesses in that they have economic characteristics that result in vastly different operating margins. In analyzing the common stock of SBUX, the investor must understand what drives top line growth, operating income, and bottom line earning power of the company. During the second quarter of 2008, SBUX suffered their worst operating performance since the company went public in June of 1992. First, I calculated SBUX monthly beta and it equals 1.2, the weekly beta equals .8, and the daily beta was 1.00. I estimated the error in the beta estimates and appear to be .4. I got this number by subtracting the monthly beta 1.2 from the weekly beta .8. I visited four different websites such as Yahoo Finance, Reuters, Nasdaq, and the Value Line beta shown in Damodaran’s company data (spreadsheet) and each one gives a different beta. Yahoo Finance gives beta of .78, Reuters has a beta of 1.21, Nasdag gives a beta of 1.11, and Value Line beta is 1.1. My preferred value for the market risk premium from the data is the Geometric Average 1.71%. The source of the risk premium is historical and I chose it because the data is most current. People are drinking much more coffee from the past and the risk premium is low which is more secure for the company. I also used historical data for my calculation and I believe that it produces the most accurate results. Based on Yahoo Finance and SBUX 10K I found that the Debt $549.6 M, Income tax expense $674.4 M, EBT $2059.1 M and D/E equals 10.62%. My Bottom-up beta is 1.12. I came up with number by multiplying Avg Beta- unlevered with (1+(1- Tax rate) * D/E mkt). My Tax rate 32.75%.
