...Scared Straight Mommy told me not to talk to the bad man. Mommy said it was my imagination. Mommy said I was safe with her. But they were wrong. They must be wrong because the bad man was always watching. I had seen the man first on my 9th birthday. Mommy told me to always be a good boy, or else the dreaded Birthday Spirit, a thing that fed on nightmares, would come, and fix you. But I knew that it was just a myth. That day, mommy and I had gone to the park to celebrate, but I wanted to see the playground. Even though mommy had said no, it was my birthday, and I could do what I want. But when I turned around, she was not there, and suddenly, I was alone. Mommy told me never to talk to strangers. But, my body froze as I realized I was in a sea of...

...Log 5 - Manual Handling & Lifting Equipment Nearly all profesions involve some form of manual handling wether it be lifting, pulling, pushing or carrying different objects. The document states that 54 million working days are lost each year due to pain, strain and injuries to the back (with more than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported to the health and safety executive every year). The risks associated with manual handling are as follows: - Injuries to the back - Injuries to the shoulders - Injuries to the neck - Injuries to the hands - Injuries to the arms - Injuries to the feet These risks can be caused by any of the following: Moving heavy/awkward loads, lifting in an area where the space the person has to move is restricted or enclosed, carrying loads up and down sets of stairs and finaly if the person lifting moves awkwardly, for example by reaching, stooping or twisting. To best avoid injury when carrying out manual handling activities it is important for empolyers and employyes to follow these steps: Step 1 - Think about all the activities within the workplace which require staff to move materials and decide if the manual handling is actually necessary. For example could trolleys, hoists, chutes, roll cages, lift trucks or any other lifting aids be used to help. Step 2 - If the manual handling can not be avoided then the risks associated with each task must be considered. Step 3 - With regard to the load think about the following: Is...

...The straight razor is an old fashioned razor used primarily by men. The razor is famously recognized by having a handle in which the blade sections folds back into. Since the acquisition of The Art of Shaving by world famous Procter & Gamble the straight razors have been making a comeback. Currently The Art of Shaving has a primary target market of males between the ages of 35-45. Normally they would be in a managerial or executive position with an income greater than $75,000. They tend to attract those who are very outgoing, authoritative, and fashion forward. The target social class is the upper middle class. Because the straight razor is such an old fashioned style of shaving there are very little substitutes in its niche market. Proctor and Gamble owns 80% of the much larger undifferentiated market with the brand name Gillette. Currently, The Art of Shaving is positioning itself to deliver upscale shaving products at nearly the most expensive prices. Due to the current marketing strategy and the current primary target group the buyers tend to be very complex, choose the higher end razors, and become infrequent buyers due to the length of time a straight razor lasts. They offer a Royal Shave service from master barbers in order to make recommendations and allow consumers to test their products. The straight razor overall is a much better product when compared to substitutes like the cartridge razor. With the straight razor you tend to get a much higher quality product and...

...Loyalty In Richard Russo’s novel Straight Man the theme of high and low loyalty in different characters plays an influential role throughout the novel. By high loyalty I mean a person who stays loyal to someone whom he or she loves, no matter what. By low loyalty I mean a person who does not stay loyal to people they are with and try to not reveal their disloyalty. We see characters of both types in Russo’s novel. We see characters who are loyal and we also the characters who are not loyal. Some characters in Straight Man show extremely high loyalty to people they love while other characters show extremely low loyalty. The main character Hank and his mother, Mrs. Devereaux, are very good examples of loyal people. Hank stays loyal to his wife Lily but he always has fear that his wife is not loyal to him and that she is having an affair. The reason why Hank thinks this way is caused by his father’s disloyalty when he left Hank and his mother when he was a little boy. He has a fear that Lily might leave him too one day. These thoughts that Hank has about his wife are wrong and shows his childhood trauma. That trauma caused him to lose his faith in other people, even to his wife. Even though that Hank tries to flirt with another woman he never thought of having an affair with her, which makes him a loyal person. Hank’s mother, on the other hand, even stays loyal to her betrayer husband who left her and her son and never came back for years. She thinks that he will come back and...

...Alex Rangel MUS360 TR 4PM Research Paper The genre of music called “Hip Hop,” originated back in the 1960’s with the help of a Jamaican native and Dj, named Kool Hurc aka, Clive Cambell. Since the evolution of hip hop, the style of music has become one of the main branches of an artistic culture that consists of b-boying (break dancing), graffiti, and MC-ing. All of which have tremendously influenced many aspiring artists, their physical images, the ever-changing sound of hip hop, and other elements that relate to the hip hop culture. A lot of people claim that hip hop and rap can only be about violence, aggression, sex, and money in order to sell or be popular. Another view on hip hop and rap is that it’s too violent, and inappropriate to audiences. That it’s not even music but just a bunch of crap, when in reality, it’s like poetry. The lyrics that artists write come from personal experiences, and perceptions of what they see in the world they live in. Hip hop and rap is more than just music. One of the primary sources I found is a review/article published in “The New York Times” called “The Uncluttered Hip-hop of De La Soul”, written by Peter Watrous, in which Watrous critiques the performance and the group De La Soul at a show. This review of Del La Soul is relevant to the history of hip hop course because it makes a point in which gives an argument for positive recognition of not only De La Soul, but other hip hop groups with similar style of music. These groups...

...Dreww Pule’ English 1 Gharib-Thedell Intro-Body Paragraph2 Imagine not being comfortable enough to go about your daily life, in your own body. How uncomfortable and helpless would you feel? The type of hardship I will be discussing and writing about will be about depression, an emotional stress. The articles, texts, and quotes I will be using are going to be from, “ Violinist has The World on Two Strings” by author Steve Lopez. The other article I will be using will be “Straight Outta Compton” by authors Jeff Benedict and Armen Kentyian. Refuge is important to depression victims and anybody who has an emotional stress. Refuge is the number one reason why many people make it through tough times. Not finding refuge and trying to face the over powering emotions by yourself, could lead you to convince yourself to end your life. Depression can make you feel like your worthless, you have no meaning, and that you are nothing. Depression is a type of emotional stress and it can lead you to think that you don’t need anything else but to be left alone. Refuge can prevent all of those feelings from happening. Refuge can come in many types of forms. Nathaniel Ayers will show you his. In the article, “ Violinist has The World On Two Strings” by author Steve Lopez, Lopez writes about a man who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia for many years. Somehow, this homeless musician has found his refuge. When Nathaniel Ayers felt lost, he knew that he could always turn to music as his...

...Response to Review (Straight Out of Compton} I first want to start off saying that Straight Out of Compton was a good movie. I was actually shocked by how good the acting was, and how believable the characters were. The movie does a great job of revealing the reason for NWA's breakup and acts as a precautionary tale about staying true to your ideals. I actually disagree with the grade ew.com is giving Straight out of Compton that is a B plus. I would have thought giving the movie Straight Out of Compton at least an A minus. I liked how the review first started off showing the history of N.W.A when it first started in 1988 and where the music first originated from. I enjoyed the part where it said N.W.A was a gang but it wasn’t a traditional gang, just a tight knitted group of guys that lived in poverty and were often harassed by police officials. The part in the review which I thought was my favorite and that I one hundred percent agreed on was when ew.com mentioned that the best part of the film was “N.W.A’s origin story: their aspirations, assembly, and earliest recordings that lead them to put their faith in a seemingly paternal manager.” The reason why I agreed with this part being the best of the film was because it was the rising action to the climax where they find out that the manger they put their faith on actually backs stabs them by cheating everybody except Eazy- E of their share of the money and also their credit to the music. Eventually the manger does cheat...

...Fuck the Police written by NWA is a great modern representation of the contact zone. The contact zone is defined as “social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermath as they are lived out in many parts of the world today”(Pratt 34) by Mary Louise Pratt in her writing titled “Arts of the contact zone”. This song has been helpful and caused huge issues within the communities. The song shows the struggle that people of color go through in society and how different races portray each other based on stereotypes. NWA, which stands for Niggas With Attitude, wrote this song as a parody. I believe that they presented themselves with such vulgar because they felt like everyone saw them in a negative way. They became what the public thought they were. In doing so they caused a lot of commotion with the FBI and police. The song is from the view point of the 3 attorneys; MC Ren, Ice Cube, Eazy-E and the judge Dr. Dre. Each attorney shares their story about the struggle of being a person of color living in Compton. The first verse is by Ice Cube who mentions “and not the other color so police think/ they have the authority to kill a minority”(NWA 5). What Ice Cube is saying is that cops think because they are white, they are superior to people of color. The cops assume they have the right to kill them and abusing the authority they have. Instead of protecting the civilians...

...Jacques Baynes ENG 101 October 2, 2015 Brad Baumgartner Straight Out Of Compton “Any publicity is good publicity. “Aspiring rapper Eric “Eazy-E” Wright states to the rest of his fellow N.W.A brothers as they sit to discuss the police and F.B.I threats that they have been receiving in the mall. The movie Straight Out of Compton is based on the true story about six troubled some young black men residing in Compton, California who rise unexpectedly to fame, using their viciously honest rhymes, die hard beats, and frustrations about their lifestyle in the streets of the hood. Active from 1986 to 1991 these six men Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Arabian Prince, MC Ren, and DJ Yella have endured enormous controversy owning to their explicit lyrics that many people have view as being disrespectful to women, drugs and crime, police, and gang violence. It’s hard to actively hate Straight Out of Compton, a movie so realistic that is based seemly on the true story of six black rappers whose lyrics and rhymes had left a lasting legacy and impression on the hip-hop culture. O’Shea Jackson Jr and Jason Mitchell are spectacular as Ice Cube and Easy-E who are best friends that come to gloves with one another when Eazy-E receives more money and love from their fans then Ice Cube. Their outstanding performance acting over the edge and showing actions of ruthlessness towards each other as both men spit disrespectful lyrics at each other to become the best rap artist in the industry at that...

DJ Yella and MC joined later with Arabian Prince and dropped out a little before the official release of Straight Outta Compton. Jerry Heller was an American music manager and businessman. He was best known for being the manager of N.W.A. The record labels that N.W.A. was with were Ruthless Records, Priority Records, Interscope Records, Capitol Records, and EMI records. The record Straight Outta Compton talked about the violence and brutality of gang-ridden South Central L.A. and a lot of people did not like that, and the labels for it were Ruthless Records and Priority Records. On August 1, 1989 the FBI sent a letter to N.W.A saying: “Dear Mr. Manganiello: A song recorded by the rap group N.W.A. on their album entitled "Straight Outta Compton" encourages violence and disrespect for the law enforcement officer and has...

...Most groups of citizens say specific icons started the horrible rapping, groups like N.W.A. N.W.A.’s 1988 album Straight Outta Compton is a parodic enactment of the racialized discourses of law and order during the late 1980s, or what I am calling the mark of criminality. Its release constituted a watershed moment in black popular culture that coincided with the devastating consequences of surveillance, containment, and spectacular scapegoating associated with Reagan-era crime control policies and rhetoric. Critics argue that the album and its reception by the law enforcement community of the late 1980s functioned as a confrontation over the meanings of race, place, and crime in the twentieth century. In addition to revealing the contingent meanings of criminality in popular and political culture, the legacy of Straight Outta Compton provides insights into the role of criminality in...

...Lyft is an American transportation network company. It connects users to registered drivers who can pick them up in just a few minutes. It uses a mobile phone application that facilitates peer-to-peer ridesharing by connecting passengers to drivers. This new business model has started many controversial debates on its legality and treatment of its drivers. However it has become a very popular form of transportation because of its easy, convenient, and affordable pricing compared to traditional taxi cabs. There are many ridesharing companies out there but there are only two that stand out. Lyft and Uber are the largest ridesharing companies in U.S. Although both companies are fairly large, Uber is more widely known and has a very strong and dominant competitive position over Lyft. There are many ways in which Lyft can incorporate the six principles of persuasion in order to improve their competitive position. Reciprocation The first principle is Reciprocation. This principle states that people feel indebted to those who do something for them or give a gift. Lyft is already applying this principle by giving new customers a $50 credit on their first ride, but they can further implement this principle. Lyft can give existing customers an incentive to continue using their services. There can be a program created that is similar to the ones airliners use reward customers based on loyalty and miles traveled. Customers can earn points by miles that they accumulate using a Lyft and...

...The film Straight Outta Compton views the life of a “gangsta,” rap group called N.W.A, which stands for “Niggas With Attitude,” who struggle in their society due to the stereotyping that all black folks, are drug dealers or gang affiliated. In this movie the rappers must show the world what life really is with their ingenuous music about the “war on drugs”. Some viewers may say that the music or rapping that this group N.W.A performs is nothing but violence and gang affiliation, but what the public does not understand is that in this time period black folks were treated as if they were all criminals. At the beginning of the film the hood life is introduced, giving the people a feeling of what it was like to be a black folk living in Compton....
