It wasn’t that long ago that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was an unmarried mother to three children with a fourth child on the way. The father of the first three was no help whatsoever – no child support, lived 2 ½ hours away and the father of this soon to be child turned out to be a total disappointment and we were, unfortunately, on our way to ending the relationship. My job at the time was Administrative Assistant at a hotel close to the airport – a job that put food on the table and paid the rent, but by no means was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Aside from having my beautiful children, I felt like a complete failure. And then one day, a phone call came that completely changed my life… I was sitting at my desk and saw that I had a voicemail from an unfamiliar number. As I listened to the message from Ms. Kenyatta Joseph, Health Science Career Advisor at Valencia College, my heart began to beat faster. She stated that there was an opening in the Spring 2013 Nursing program and that I was next on the waiting list. I could hardly believe it; in fact, I could hardly even remember that I had applied for this program seemingly forever ago! I called Ms. Joseph back immediately… “Yes, I accept! I’ll take the spot!”
“Ok great, well orientation is on Friday (it was Wednesday), I know it’s short notice but will you be able to attend?”
“Yes, of course, I will absolutely make it work…when do classes actually start, by the way?”
“Classes begin in January…” I looked down at my growing belly and said to myself ‘Liz, you are due with this baby in January; let’s not mess this up.’ After I had composed my thoughts and realized that a baby and the beginning of nursing school weren’t really going to mix well, I asked Ms. Joseph if I could instead take my place for the Summer 2013 term. She informed that this was fine and classes began May 6th. After I hung up the phone, two feelings overcame me. One was of complete excitement at this amazing opportunity in my life and the other was sheer panic and worry. How was I going to do this with three kids and a newborn? Where will I find the time to study and most importantly, how will I be able to afford it all? Well the saying “where there’s a will, there’s a way” wasn’t just pulled out of thin air. This is the slogan that I’ve lived by for the past three months of nursing school. Every late night and every early morning, I’ve said to myself that I can and I WILL do this. I have been completely blessed by God in how lucky I’ve been with support and love; not only by my family and children, but by my professors and classmates as well. Nursing, as I have learned, is combining science and art and caring is at the heart of everything nurses do. Going through all the hardships in my life has molded me into the person I am today, someone who is capable of providing care to others just as others have provided to me. Being in the wonderful nursing program at Valencia, I finally have a clear career path that I want to take. After I earn my Associates in Nursing, I plan on attending UCF to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. From there I want to earn my Masters in Nursing in order to achieve my ultimate goal in being a Certified Nurse Anesthetist. I am eager to begin volunteering at Winnie Palmer Hospital once I finish Nursing 1, as I believe this will give me great experience in working with women and children. Children, especially babies, ESPECIALLY sick babies, are where my true passion lies. I would like to work in the NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital upon graduation. Being in the career of Nursing is extremely important to me, as I feel that I have finally found my passion and true calling in life. There have been so many times where I’ve just taken from others because I’ve had nothing to give, either financially or emotionally. But with Nursing, I can give back to the world in a way that I never thought could be possible. I truly look forward to serving the public, families – my own and others – and also God in whatever way I possibly can. Through Nursing, all will be possible.

...Selvin Mathew College Map Scholarship Essay Send to clayton.stroleny@ey.com by Feb.2 Imagine a world where college or post secondary education was only available to a select few and withheld from others due to their family history, socioeconomic status, or even geopgraphy. Before being accepted into the College Map program by Ernst & Young (EY) for mentoring, I felt like I might have fallen under those statistics. Fortunately, through EY's scholarship information sessions, admission statistics, tips and Essays for College and Scholarships program, I now know what is actually available to students. If I had the power to change Miami Central in anyway, it would be to make the College Map program less exclusive, that is, to make College Map available to a larger segment of the student body; as it was made available to myself because nothing amounts to the value of a college education. Specifically, I would make College Map available or even mandatory for all 9-12th graders to have them prepped and ready for the transition to postsecondary education. Entering high school, the last thing on my mind was college. That is ironic because since College Map, I understand that I should have been preparing for higher education while in much sooner. Unfortunately, underclassmen commonly are not aware of the hectic college application process they’re about to embark on. However, it's not until junior and senior years that GPAs, Standardized tests and essay competitions become the...

...Scholarship Essay Q&A 1) List 3-5 extra-curricular activities and tell why they are important to you. Having the experience of playing varsity sports has brought a new light on how I perceived teamwork. What does it mean to be a part of a team? Teamwork is such a vital part of our everyday lives. Without teamwork, on is not prepared to handle situations where cooperation is needed to complete a task. Teamwork and cooperation are two significant qualities that many need to have in their lives to face the daily troubles of the “real world.” Varsity tennis and basketball are two experiences that have taught me to work with others in such a way that is useful and time-efficient. Throughout high school, I have been given several opportunities to go and reach out to those in my surrounding community. Mira Mesa High School has a program called the Outreach Dinner that occurs every year right around Thanksgiving assisting and providing the homeless and less fortunate people of San Diego County with free meals, dessert, and drinks. For two consecutive years, I have participated in this event and held significant positions each time. During my first year joining the Outreach Dinner, I was the head of the waiters/waitresses and their assistants who helped set up, serve the food and drinks to homeless, and clean up the tables and disposable plates. In addition to that, we were encouraged to speak with the guests and provide hospitality. In the second year, I volunteered...

As a women I, have experienced the battle of self-hate, which has been very influential to my life in both a positive and negative aspect. From the time I was only fourteen years old, I have faced the battle of overcoming the self-hatred I developed amongst my inner self. The most commonly faced issue found amongst many women throughout the world is the issue of body weight. For many years, I myself struggled with facing that terrifying, horrific number on the scale. No matter how many times it has been stated that the number on the scale “does not define a person”, it didn’t change my own outlook. Turning to extreme measures to decrease my body weight seemed like the only solution. Although little did I realize, that not only would these extreme measures also come along with intense mood changes, but that it would affect my body both physically and mentally. The first idea that approached my mind was “just don’t eat, you will drop such a significant amount of weight that way, without even making any effort”; newsflash, that is the ABSOLUTE worst solution to turn to. As a cause of...

...Scholarship Essay 15 April 2013 A Divine Mind Education was never a priority in my house growing up. Poor grades really did not matter to my family. College was never even spoken of, let alone an option to ponder. After graduating from high-school I entered the military, mainly because it was my only option. Upon growing up and traveling the world, it became apparent that an education was a must. It became a passion of mine to go to college. Actually, while teaching my son to read at the tender age of four, a question arose in my mind. How could I ask my child to go to college, when I had never been? It is with great pride today that I am able to state that I attend College. Thank you for the opportunity to apply for the Chancellor’s scholarship. Being awarded this scholarship would alleviate the financial stress that goes along with attending college. Being a non-traditional student with a family, there have been times in the past year that finding sources for financing college was extremely difficult. If awarded this endowment, it would free up funds allowing me to truly focus on my studies. Without the worry of monetary issues, there would be no stopping me. My plan for the future is to graduate from the nursing program. This gift of the Chancellor’s scholarship would allow me to continue on that path without any interruptions. Being awarded this scholarship would also provide an excellent source of accomplishment. Living in a small town all of my life has been a rewarding...

...INCREASING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 1 Increasing Efficiency in a Community College Scholarship Program Margit Brumbaugh Concordia University Portland An Action Research Proposal/Report Presented to The Graduate Program in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Masters in Education/Educational Leadership Concordia University Portland 2011 INCREASING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 2 Abstract This action research was designed to increase the efficiency of a community college scholarship program. The research developed in response to a desire to increase numbers of scholarship applications from students and to streamline the selection and financial reconciliation processes at the research site. The literature search revealed these aims to be common among community college scholarship programs nationwide. Data was gathered through surveys, interviews, and observations. Data analysis suggests that passive information on the part of colleges, lack of student confidence in qualifications, and lack of student awareness of the differences in scholarship criteria are significant contributing factors leading to low rates of application. Data related to recipient selection processes show that committee training, the use of multiple reviewers, and the use of consistently-applied scoring rubrics increase selection efficiency. Results suggest further research possibilities to determine the extent to which various scholarship marketing strategies, and the manner...

...Making a Dream Come True Being awarded the NOYCE Scholarship would be of great assistance in achieving my dreams not only economically, but professionally as well. My goal is to teach math to the young adults in our local high schools. The scholarship would play an important part in my education by providing me with experience, knowledge and opportunities to improve myself as a teacher. My dream of becoming a teacher dates back to the days when I was a child. At school, I have always been the student who explains math to her classmates. Doing this is something that I have always enjoyed. Those experiences motivated me to pursue a career in education. Similarly, when I worked as a crew leader at McDonald’s, I taught the new employees how to perform the job. This helped to increase my desire to teach professionally. Later when I started working as a math and physics tutor at the Center for Students with Disabilities at El Paso Community College, I confirmed that teaching is something that I love to do and that I did not make a mistake when selecting my career. I obtained tremendous satisfaction in the difference my teaching made to the scholastic success of the students I tutored. In addition, I am interested in teaching as a career because I believe that as a teacher I will have the opportunity to make an impact on society. As a math teacher I will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinkers of the future. I will develop individuals who can analyze and find solutions...

...At 13, I was an ordinary teenage girl. I had my favorite movie stars, my secret crushes, and I probably ate too much chocolate. School mattered very little to me and learning even less. I worried about getting good grades in school but only to please my parents. My happy life consisted of sweet treats and even sweeter thoughts, an endless array of bite-sized banality. All that changed the summer of my 13th year, the year my older sister went away to college. I idolized my older sister. She was five years older than me and my link to the shadowy world of adulthood that seemed so out of reach. When she went away, I was devastated. It was a very wet summer that year and one particularly rainy day, I was lying in her empty bed looking at the artifacts she'd left behind, clutching an old sweater. My eyes travelled around the room and came to rest on her bookshelf. For whatever reason, I picked one book up and began thumbing through it. It was Emile Zola's Germinal and it was to change my life forever. Germinal woke me up from my slumber. I began to see the world around me, to look at it with new eyes. I always thought things like poverty, greed and injustice happened elsewhere, to people that more or less deserved it. But the more I read about Etienne, Catherine, and the Vandame mine, the more I began to realize the universal nature of suffering. This is part of what makes Zola's novel a great work of art. It has the power to change the way you think while also being beautiful...
