APA References

The following sample References page has examples of the following types of sources.

1. Report/Document available on the web, authored by a nongovernmental organization, no publication date

2. Journal Article (continuous pagination throughout volume)

3. Magazine Article

4. Article in a Popular Magazine

5. Report/Document available on the web, no author identified, no publication date (provide title first)

6. YouTube-type Video Blog Post (Note that titles are not italicized) 7. Newspaper Article

The examples on the References page are in the order that they are listed above. For example, if to see how to list a magazine article on the References page, look at the third example on page three.

Sources are listed in alphabetical order by author’s last name. If there is no author, use the title of the article and alphabetize appropriately. See example five for an article found on the Internet without an author or date of publication.

Additional tips:

• URLs should not be underlined. To remove the underlining, highlight the URL and hit the Control key (CTRL) + “U” twice. However, URLs should take the reader to the EXACT page used as a source. The only exception is if you are discussing an organization as a whole, when you may use the homepage URL.

• DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique electronic code assigned to an online journal article. If the article has a DOI, add the number to the end of the citation. See Limb (9) for an example; do not add a space following DOI:

• All references are double-spaced within and between references. There are no extra lines between entries

• The first line of each entry is flush along the left margin; each subsequent line is indented. To indent the subsequent lines, manually hit the enter key at the end of the first line, followed by the Tab key. Repeat for each additional line.

• URLs may need to be broken to comply with standard APA format. If a URL must be broken, break it before most punctuation within the URL and not after. Never separate http:// from the URL. In addition, be sure to turn off the automatic hyphenation in Word before breaking the URL.

• APA no longer requires a date of retrieval for web sources. Use “Retrieved from” followed by the URL.

• Do not include the URL for articles retrieved from databases; this will include articles found in the Virtual Library. Instead, look for the DOI on the first page of the article. If there is no DOI, use the URL for the journal’s homepage.

• Pay close attention to punctuation and format on the examples below.

• Citation editors, including the one in Word, are only as accurate as the information entered, which means you still have to format the citation properly.

• APA uses specific capitalization rules. You will see these rules applied to the examples on the next page. For example, titles of articles and books are capitalized differently than titles of magazines, journals, and newspapers.
