The March For Our Lives movement became the catalyst of our generations revolution. We will no longer sit aside and watch our schools be plagued with the horrors of mass shooting and the safety of our classmates be put in danger no longer. Once every horrendous act of terrorism is bestowed beyond our beloved school children, the people we depend on the most to protect our country seem to stand still. We are told that “this is not a time speak of gun laws, but to express our grievances,”however, at this rate we are in agony, and nothings changed. The conversation is well overdue and the young generation will speak out against it to make change. We are not too young to be aware of the complications within our countries’ gun laws. We shall protest, spread awareness and be active within our communities to ensure safety for our local schools. …show more content…

Our activity in our country influences children younger than us to stand up for what they believe in, despite what age they may be. School shootings are issues that affect all students in the United States, were terrified, frustrated and full of sorrow. We have more than enough issues that we will be plagued with as adults in the future, we atleast want say in what is happening to our own lives within our own environment. ... TWO BOYS, SAME CRIME  Woking up in the morning, getting your kids ready for school. Kissing them and sending them to school. That moment was the last time you see your children alive. I don’t remember any teacher or administrator ever mentioning the subject. There was nothing like there is today, when school kids know what “lockdown” means.School is the first place that is safe you think. Two kids couldn't take the pressure anyone and let it out by killing everyone. Thousands of lives ruin by a child with a gun. School shooting is the number one problem in your country. When was little I didn't think about school shooting or someone coming into your school and shooting us. Knowing that your kid meant be the shooter is what ames your breath away. Thinking not my kid, anyone can be the shooter, you just have to look very close on the signs that child has like mental illness, guns, video games. ...School Shootings When I think of school shootings my mind immediately goes back to the Columbine High school shooting. This was the first school shooting that I was actually old enough to remember and understand. I still remember having a moment of silence for all of those involved. The New world encyclopedia states “Columbine High School shooting was one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The incident drew worldwide attention. It led to widespread discussion over gun control and the prevention of school violence.” (Funk & Wagnalls) According to Wikipedia from 2011 to 2015 there has been 99 school shootings including grade schools, high schools, and colleges. This is a problem that needs more national attention in my opinion in order for there to be some form of change. The killers in school shootings (mass shootings) are what we call mass murderers, they typically want to send a message. It was stated the two students in Columbine sought revenge on bullies; this shooting/bombing was meant to send the message to them. According to a few articles I read they define their personalities as, “pseudocommando” these individuals kill in public during the daytime, plan their offense well in advance, and come prepared with arsenal of weapons, very similar to that of the school shooting killers. (Knoll) According to Warnick, the children...

...School Shootings Sandy Hook is one of the deadliest school shootings in the US history, resulting in the death of twenty six people (5). There have been seventy four school shootings only during the eighteen months after the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012(4). Even though less than 1% of youth homicides take place in a school setting, it can cause long term damage to the students and school staff members(6). Students who witnessed school shootings are more likely to resist returning to school, have sleeping problems and to develop the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The federal government should interfere to protect our students and stop school shooting. One of the most common answer to the problem is strengthen gun laws (1). The solution suggests that making it harder to buy/register a gun will probably reduce school shooting as it will be harder for minors and psychos to obtain arms. People would be required to have a mental check, a background check, to lock up the gun and to undergo mandatory training before being allowed to own guns in their homes. This solution is built on the believe that guns are the main reason why school shootings happen. In reality, such a law will help reducing unintentioned crimes not the planned crimes. The law will help teaching the good citizens how to use guns correctly but criminals do not follow the law and they will find an illegal way to commit their crimes. The fact that committing a mass in a public place by a gun is easier...

...This paper will seek to determine why have school shootings become familiar media events. On April 20th 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, two students of Columbine High School, equipped with multiple firearms including explosives went on a killing spree, before committing suicide (Kohn, 2001). Wounding more than 20 people and causing the death of 13 people, the Columbine High School shooting is considered as one of the most important school shootings in history. School shooting is the action in which ‘multiple intentional killings’ are carried out in ‘educational institutions’ by one or more perpetrators (Böckler et al., 2013, p.3). The devastating event not only appeared on newspapers but it has since been adapted into an Oscar-winning...

Paper on School Shooting

...School shootings The recent increase in School shootings across America has made schools tighten their security significantly, schools are implementing metal detectors, mandatory bag checks and school police, to make sure no weapons enter the school grounds and make sure all students are safe. Every morning from 7:30 to 8:05a.m the school gates are open and the student are able to freely enter the school after their check, after that the school gates are closed, only school personal or people who has been given a entry permit are able to enter the school. The gates do once again open at 2:00p.m where the students are able to leave the school and take the school busses home. But recently students have started to complain over the newly tighten security, the students are annoyed by the new morning checks, they have to wait in line for around 15-20 minutes before entering the school. Some students are also starting to feel more paranoid and unsafe then they did before the extra security was added. A student at Springfield Highschool says – “I feel like a wrongly convicted criminal entering a jail of potential mass murderers, and I can tell my classmates feel the same way I do, everyone is sticking to who they know”. The principle of Springfield High is very concerned with the students’ insecurity but says –“The students of Springfield High are not use to the new security yet, but they will most likely feel more at ease once they get use to it, as long as they have nothing to...

...Unfortunately in the contemporary world, school shootings often occur, and most of the time the victims are young children. Since 1999 after the Columbine shooting in Colorado, school shootings have become particularly frequent, especially in America with Sandy Hook and Stoneman Douglas, yet the US government rarely makes changes. However, a few years before this, a school shooting in the United Kingdom had a very different outcome than the shootings in America. In 1996, Thomas Hamilton killed sixteen students at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland, UK. After the Dunblane Massacre, the government responded to the peoples campaigns to pass sufficient laws and risked negative impacts on the economy to go as far as they could in preventing similar...

...Although rampage school shootings are statistically very rare, the abruptness and magnitude of the events, as well as the mystery of what causes them, has resulted in widespread speculation about the perpetrators. Media coverage often focuses their explanations on social factors such as peer harassment and the influence of violence in video games and television programs. These factors, however, cannot fully explain why school shootings occur or how they can be prevented. For example, it is probably safe to say that numerous students are bullied on a daily basis in virtually every school across the country, but school shootings are uncommon. Respectively, millions of adolescents play violent video games and watch violent movies without ever...

...William Tubao Kaplan May 7, 2014 The issue of school shootings is important to students and should be to the general public. A school shooting involves an educational institution and a firearm being discharged at its facility. It may also refer to shootings near or on a school bus or near a school when it is in session. School shootings could occur anywhere in the world where firearms are available for access. These types of shootings in particular have generated a political dispute on stricter gun control. There are well known shootings in the United States, Europe, Canada, and other countries. The United States has the highest number of school related shootings. This paper will examine a few of those incidents and compare how the media and academic articles portray them. Overall, media articles show that coverage of school shooting events such as the ones that occurred at Virginia Tech University and Sandy Hook Elementary School tend to primarily focus on the number of victims, reactions of family, the misfortune of the event, as well as the mental state and background of the shootings. For an example, in the Los Angeles Times article “Gunman kills 20 kids, 6 adults at Connecticut elementary school”, they focus on the number of dead, imagery, and the emotion after the shooting such as parent’s reactions and children’s reactions. In the article they seem to dramatize the whole situation by saying things like “Evil visited this community today”. Although it is a tragic...

School Shootings

...SCHOOL SHOOTINGS I am going to write about the topic school shootings, based on the two texts “Warning” by Terry McCarthy and “It’s only me” by Nancy Gibbs, who both deal with an event which happened 10 years ago. A school shooting is an incident in which gun violence occurs at an educational institution. It most commonly describes an act committed by either students or intruders from outside school campus. They are to be distinguished from crowd-containment shootings enforced by law personnel and are also differentiated from other kinds of school violence, or terror attacks involving multiple weapons. The incident was committed by a, at the time, 15 year old boy called Charles Andrew Williams, Andy for short. He recently moved to Santee, California, a suburb with around 58.000 inhabitants. He was described as being a “good Christian boy” from rural Maryland. Andy was bullied at school, neglected by his father and rarely saw his mother. His parents divorced when he was 5, and things were not good at home. Even his own friends taunted him, but he just slacked it off, like he kept it all inside. His friends described him as being a “follower” and someone you could easily manipulate with. Andy started hanging out with a different group people called the “Grommits”, who were basically a couple of dope-smoking skateboarders. Andy’s friends noticed he started acting different – he ditched school and got into trouble. He talked openly about “pulling a Columbine” and some...

Mass School Shootings In Schools

...The definition of a school shooting is “a violent act in which someone, usually a student, uses a gun to kill or injure teachers, students, and staff” ( ). According to Everytown Research, there has been 214 school shootings since 2013 in the US, which is nearly an average of one a week. Already here has been six school shootings in 2017! With this fact in mind, the biggest concern on people’s minds, such as students and the parents, is how to stay safe. Allowing teachers to have guns in the classroom will provide comfort and safety to students and parents. If an intruder or a shooter comes to a school, more classrooms will be armed, allowing protection for others. On September 1, 2004, one of the most famous school hostage siege took place....

Persuasive Essay On School Shootings

...Since 1980 there have been 137 fatal school shootings and 297 lives were lost to these unnecessary acts of violence. In the United States, the threat of school shootings has been an increasing danger to students and teachers alike. Even on July 26, 1764, four Lenape American Indians came into a school and killed the schoolmaster and nine or ten children, this is known as the Enoch Brown school massacre and was a notorious part of Pontiac’s rebellion. The more recent shootings such as Columbine and Virginia Tech a majority of those victims were students. Many of the victims cannot rely on police in the beginning of these attacks, the average shooting lasts around 12 minutes but average police response time is 18 Minutes. Teachers should be able to carry concealed weapons because armed teachers and staff can decrease the threats of school shootings, intruders on campus, and respond to threats faster than the time it takes police officers to respond. The police are effective in handling these threats but the response time can take too long, with school staff members armed with concealed weapons they can stabilize the situation before the police arrive. Carrying a concealed weapons could escalate the confrontation and...
