School Suspension Is Not Effective

Why do we suspend kids? Is it effective? What could be a possible alternative? High School dropout rates are lower due to this new system of not suspending kids from school.Although, suspending students is familiar, cheap, and convenient, we should stop suspending kids from schools because, kids want to stay home from school, you’re just punishing the child instead of working out the problem, and the kid doesn’t receive the same education.
Suspending kids doesn’t punish them effectively since utmost kids don’t want to go to school. For example, sometimes kids even pretend they’re sick so they don’t have to go to school. Kids will act out to go home during the day, even if it’s a punishment. Even though the

Summary: Is Hollister's Bullying Policy Effective?

...Is Hollister’s Bullying Policy Effective? Students come to school five days a week expecting to have a normal day. They expect to go through all of their classes and then go home at the end of the day. This was not the case on April 20, 1999 in Columbine High School when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris shot and killed twelve classmates and one teacher. It is belief that the Columbine High School shooting happened because of bullying. Could this have been prevented if there was a clear bully policy in place? Can we prevent this from happening in Hollister High School based on what is stated in our bully policy? Action Research Project

...Research Proposal Rhondalyn J. Cornett Grand Canyon University TCH-587 October 1, 2014 Abstract In this action research project the researcher talked to several teachers discussing the concerns they had in education. Most teachers cited discipline in the schools as the concern they most worry about in their classrooms. I researched several articles where schools have implemented School Wide Positives Behaviors intervention Supports (SPBIS) were put into place schools showed a decrease in discipline and an increase in academic achievement. In this action cycle we implemented the first intervention to see what significant data could be reviewed. Steps in Action Research Educators use action research just about every day they are working with students. The educator could be teaching a lesson or looking a class discipline you are using action research without realizing it. The steps in action research are: Identification of the problem area, Collection and organization of data, Interpretation of data, the action based on the data, and finally reflection (Ferrance, 2000). The first step in action research is to identify the problem. If there is a discipline problem in the classroom, the first question may be why? What is causing the inappropriate behavior? Is the problem something that the educator can help solve? When choosing where to begin in your research the educator will need to ask himself several questions. The questions should higher-order in nature. The questions...

Opinions on the Move to Open Classes from June to September

...amend the opening of classes. The existing school calendar which spans from June to March is often disrupted as destructive typhoons plague the region during the rainy season that’s why our lawmakers decided to move the opening of classes from September through May to avoid numerous class suspensions and serve to protect the students during strong typhoons. The Department of Education said that it is open to the proposal by some sectors, including lawmakers to move the opening of classes but they want to ensure the comfort of the students in school and stresses the need for a comprehensive study. While the Department of Education is open on the proposal, some did not welcome this idea. An initial survey on the matter conducted way back in 2009. On the respondents, 66 percent were against the move while 34 percent were in favor. [1] Also, another ground for rejecting the proposal is the traditions celebrated during summer and being not conducive in learning because of hot weather during March. The delay in suspension of classes is one of the reasons why our lawmakers and other sectors in the community urge to move the classes from June to September. Unexpected suspension of classes is hard on the part of students because they have to deal with floods, lack of transportations and diseases. Numerous class suspensions also cause irregularity of school days due to rains and floods, horrendous difficulties to and from school and danger to life from open drains and excavations...

School Law

...students being alienated and never returning to school after being suspended or expelled are all byproducts of the zero tolerance policies adopted by their school district. School administrators have abandoned common sense due to their adherence to zero tolerance policies by applying the same discipline to students that are guilty of minor offenses and non-violent rules violations, or just poor judgment as they due to students that are repeat offenders that pose serious threats to the safety of the school. Under the Zero Tolerance policies African-American students are suspended at an approximate rate of 2.3 times that of Caucasian students nationally even when socio-economic factors are taken into consideration. These one-size fits all policies are also contributing to the elevated dropout rates related to repeated use of suspension and expulsion. The illusion that zero tolerance policies are making our schools safer has blinded school administrators to the fact that these draconian policies are contributing to the education problem in America. | Abstract . The Zero Tolerance policies that have been implemented in public school systems has eliminated common sense in determining disciplinary action, are racially biased, and are contributing to the growing population of high school dropouts. Strict adherence to so called Zero Tolerance policies has resulted in students being handcuffed, arrested and expelled from schools across the country for ridiculous offenses such...

A Modest Proposal: Gun Violence In Schools

...A Modest Proposal: Gun Violence In Schools Over a hundred innocent lives are taken every year at the hands of shooters in school alone. National rifle association has already made the proposal to have armed officers in every American school. Makes sense right? They’ve even went so far as to request for trained teachers and administrators to be allowed carry their weapons. Something’s wrong here but I can't really … put my finger on it. To most this is a big no-no. In my opinion it just isn't enough. For some odd reason everyone refuses to acknowledge the obvious problem. Children are helpless and are completely incapable of helping themselves, well they could….. If they had their own weapons I say … let’s go all out. Give the kids guns. The youngest of our population should be the first to...

School Discipline Feeds the “Pipeline to Prison”:

...School discipline feeds the “pipeline to prison”: As school discipline moves from the principal’s office to the courthouse In the article from Phi Delta Kappan (October 2011), School discipline feeds the “pipeline to prison”: As school discipline moves from the principal’s office to the courthouse, the author, Deborah Fowler, takes the stance that schools in Texas and other states have been historically safe for students and teachers even before it was commonplace for law enforcement officers to be assigned to them. The author states that since the release of the motion picture “The Blackboard Jungle” more than fifty years ago, popular media has fed the public’s concerns about juvenile delinquency. (Fowler, 2011) Fowler further states that those fears by the public are not supported by historical data, which document very few incidents involving youth and weapons in the nation’s public schools from the 1950’s to the present. Publicity around “isolated incidents” of school violence such as the Columbine shootings has increased the fears of the public as it pertains to violence in our schools. (Fowler, 2011) The author concentrates on the state of Texas in her article and cites that minor offenses such as class disruption have been criminalized, with students receiving Class C misdemeanor tickets each year. Fowler points out that historically the nation’s schools have been safe to include those in high-crime areas. School discipline has become more punitive in...

Aboriginal Education in Country Schools

...rates of detentions, absenteeism and suspensions for Indigenous students, attendance rates across all levels of education are lower for Indigenous students than those of non-Indigenous students. Research and government policy is now attempting to address these issues. Through culturally sensitive policies of inclusion, and focused strategies embedding Indigenous perspectives in education models, progress is possible towards alleviating the current poor state of Indigenous students in the Australian school system. The State of Aboriginal Education All young Australians are entitled to equal educational opportunity. Until Indigenous Australians can choose from the same range of futures as other Australians, we are not achieving our nation’s promise as a democratic society (Kemp, D. in METYA, 2000, pg. 3). Aboriginal people have been described as the most educationally disadvantaged group of people within Australia (ATSISJC, 1995). Their attendance rates across all levels of education are lower than those of non-Indigenous Australia (ABS, 2006). Poverty, health problems, infant mortality, infectious diseases, and a life expectancy that is between 15 to 20 years lower are all major factors adversely affecting their education potential (ATSISJC 1995; ABS, 2006). This essay will review strategies from government and private sectors regarding Aboriginal students in Australian schools. It will evaluate and propose effective approaches towards minimising detentions...

Understanding Reinforcement Psychology

...Punishment is a component of operant conditioning used to decrease the probability of a behavior or response by causing a change in the environment (Singer, B.F. 1970). This essay will discuss aspects of punishment such as methodology, effectiveness and its effects on behavior. It will review the effectiveness of punishment methodology by studying the variables such as age, gender, socio-economic status and exposure to crime. In the direct context of speeding, contemporary punishment includes ‘positive punishment’ whereby giving the offender a fine and ‘negative punishment’ by suspension of their license. This essay will also assess the effectiveness of punishment. Attempts to neutralize the issue of speeding include implementing warnings showing the severity and consequences of speeding. However, many young irresponsible drivers cannot relate to the seriousness by influence of their peers whom they value higher than authority figures of the law. Golias, J., Kanellaidis, G., & Zarifopoulos. K. (1995) shows that the major reason for speeding is the belief that speed limits are unreliable with a mean grade of 6.67 thus; this supports the idea that people do not perceive road authorities as an influential figure. At a younger age, influential figures are not ones that are necessarily responsible, but they appeal to them in anintrinsic way. In many cultures, speeding is acceptable; growing with this idea leads many drivers to have a habit of speeding (Blincoe, K.M., Jones, A...

Topics Im Confident to Discuss

...oblige schools to do make-up classes after a row of class suspensions last week • A big part of Luzon has been flooded due to southwest monsoon caused by typhoon Falcon last week. The bad weather condition affects schools, colleges and universities in metro manila and in different parts of Luzon that suspends classes for 3 consecutive days. It is to ensure the safety and security of the students. In return, the students will have to compensate all the suspensions with make-up classes to complete the 201 calendar year imposed by DepEd. School division superintendents will be the one to decide what type of make-up classes will they implement. It’s either make-up classes that will fall during weekends, or by simply extending the class hours during weekdays. These make-up classes are effective for both public and private schools. • It is interesting because I can relate to the topic. As a college student, I am personally involved and concerned with the issue and it has a direct effect on me. • I don’t have any negative reaction on this issue since It’s caused by natural calamities and no one wants it to happen, so make-up classes is a good alternative. I think same goes for college students like us. It’s just right to have make-up classes because we’re paying a big amount of money and we will just get nothing in return? So those 3 days is a huge loss for us and we need to take them back through these make-up classes. My other concern is the late declaration of class suspension last...
