...The Balance of School & Work During my junior year of high school I decided it was time to make my own money and begin to lean away from my parents. Although it is much easier to just ask for money, making my own taught me a lot more in the long run. I was forced to learn how to balance school work, social events, and work all at the same time. Having a job affected me in many positive ways. I learned what it was like to have an income of my own, I made many friends along the way, and I had to manage my time in order to stay on top of my studies. Taking on so many responsibilities at once and only being sixteen had its fair share of ups and downs, but when the weekly pay check came in it made it all worth it. Being a hostess at Texas Roadhouse was an ideal first job for someone like me. The paychecks were not much but the feeling of making money that I worked hard for was a feeling I had never experienced before. I was able to buy things I wanted and know that those items were 100% mine. My job taught me that making money is not always easy and made it me realize that when I asked my parents for money that it really did not just grow on trees. Without having my job in high school I believe I would have continued to rely on my parents for many of my wants. Making money was not the only thing I liked about having my job, along the way I made some really good friends. Working in a popular restaurant brought in people from many of the local high schools and colleges. As...

...Often when you speak to older adults they will tell you the school days were the best days of your life, this is not because the school days were the best of their lives, simply that they were conditioned into believing this. No adult can honestly believe that the best days of their lives were when they were treated with little or no respect, or when they were beaten with a slipper for speaking out of turn. If they truly believed that school days were so good then why did most of them leave school at 16? Fortunately today teachers don't beat us with old slippers of canes but does that really make school a better environment for the student? Well the most you could say is that it's an improvement. The fact is that the school environment is an unhealthy one; everyday you're faced with the same old routine, and even worse the same people. During your younger teenage years in the lower part of the school we are all faced with a huge task, not learning about algebra or Shakespeare, but the ultimately more important lesson of learning who we are, and who we want to be. So during these turbulent years we are not placed in a constructive, and helpful environment, we are forced into a volatile environment where the minority are bullied and the majority are too afraid to be different, we are surrounded by social stereotypes, greebos, skaters, townies goths, etc. The only way to truly be an individual is to shun other people's opinions of you...

...Waldorf schools are private schools with one goal: to teach children not only academic lessons, but lifelong lessons that fulfill the meaning of respect and obedience, which is why I agree with the enrollment of Waldorf schools. I believe that the philosophy of the Waldorf schools is right. To support my opinion and viewpoint on the topic of Waldorf schools I will use 2 sources, the article,” Why Waldorf Schools Work.”, and the article,” A Silicon Valley that doesn’t compute.” To support my viewpoint on Waldorf schools. My first reason is that Waldorf students are more engaged, committed, and even more excited in school. In the article,” Why do Waldorf Schools Work.” It says,” Waldorf students are significantly more enthusiastic about learning,...

...When I look back at certain aspects of my life, I realize that I don’t do a lot of self-care. Balancing school, work and an internship is very tough. Not to mention, trying to balance being a leader of a club at school, homework and finding some time for myself. I have a habit of placing things in order from important to least important. I place certain classes, work, my internship and physically eating as very important in my life. Homework, talking on the phone with my family and being a leader holds second place. And lastly, having some type of a social life is usually my last choice. I always find myself surrounded by work, school or my internship that I don’t really have time to go out or hang out with friends as much as I would like....

...Parents with a higher education level will have greater probability of being involved in their children’s school work could this be possible. Parent’s involvement as early as preschool suggests that it is vital in children’s formal schooling for academic success. The participation of the parents on a regular basis is a two way issue. In order for the child to do well in school the parent has to be involved entirely. Every parent would like to see his or her child succeed in life so parents’ that care make a conscious effort to be present in their life. It is obvious that parents who are more involved set positive outcome for their children. According to Hill et al. (2004) the higher parental education level, parent academic involvement was related to fewer problems and academic achievement. For example, more highly educated mothers were more likely to be actively in support of their children placement in honors courses, manage academic achievement and maintain contact with the school than less educated parents (Hill et al., 2004). This may be due to the fact of parents’ interest, and the children’s ability to succeed in school. Researchers consistently agree that SES Socioeconomic status can vary because of parent’s economic and social ranking and can be based on father’s education level, mother’s education level, father’s occupation, mother’s occupation, and family income (Hill et al., 2004). This demographic factor such as SES was associated with the achievement outcome...

...criticize the high school system saying that the majority of the schools do practice the same rituals for years, students taking all kind of subjects in a systematize order without really benefiting anyone, neither the student or the society. Students not only that enjoy taking different classes, keeps them busy during the day and off the labor market until after graduation. Plenty of energy is spend in searching for a solution to the problem of students exiting the public schools without being adequately educated, however no one has looked at the most responsible for this problem: the students themselves and the community. For most of the people school is a place where children are gathered under the force of the law to pursue the learning of what the community believes is important. My experience is and I believe strongly that there must be compromises between the people and the community in which they live. If the community sends the message that school is important than children will have a different attitude towards school. Also, children, and especially older children and adolescents, learn much more outside of school than within it. The kids watch the older all the time, learning from what they see, admiring or not what they do and how they do it, whether are family members or neighbors or representations of people and places displayed in the media. If what is "outside" of school rewards a child and gives access to that which is valued within school, a symbiosis results...

...Diera Kelley Business Economics GM545 Session-July 2012 Dvkelley@yahoo.com Exercise 1 Everyone’s Gasoline Problem In 2003 average gasoline prices in the city of phoenix was a $1.52 and peaked to $2.11 per gallon. On July 30 a pipeline rupture, due to slow repairs, reduced the supply of gasoline causing dramatic price increases. With only two sources of gasoline, one from west Texas and the other from the west coast, phoenix was forced to pay the increased prices from west coast suppliers. Resorting to the consumers determinants of supply, preference would have to become a big constituent to make consumers adopt other modes of transportation. ” In the short run, a gasoline price increase of 10 percent would reduce consumer demand by just 2 percent, according to these studies. This suggests that gasoline prices in Phoenix would have had to increase by a large amount to reduce the quantity of consumers’ purchases by 30 percent, the amount of lost supply. Extrapolating from above, prices would have to increase by 150 percent. Phoenix prices did increase substantially – by 40 percent – but remained far below a 150 percent price increase, because Phoenix gas stations had succeeded in obtaining some additional gasoline supplies from the West Coast (Gasoline, 2012).” The law of demand states that price increase causes consumers to buy less which affects the determinants. The affect on the consumers...

...The Porter Thesis As we have seen (Lecture 1), Michael Porter in Competitive Advantage of Nations argues that the fortunes of economies rest on the competitive advantages held by their firms and industries. National factor and demand conditions encourage the development of specific competitive advantages and specialization, and, therefore, also the development of specific types of industry. Variations in specialization, output and expertise explain differences in the competitive advantages of nations and in levels of value added and living standards. Porter contends, furthermore, that these national advantages may be difficult to replicate elsewhere, and that they may be embedded in a specific geographical location or cluster offering advantages in the acquisition of technology, knowledge, capital, skills, support structure, and so on. [pic] Porter seeks to explain why companies and industries have emerged in some countries and not others, and why certain economies have expanded in recent decades while others have stagnated or declined. In Competitive Strategy, published in 1980, he dealt with matters of industrial structure, competitor behaviour and the formulation of corporate strategy (M.E.Porter, Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980). Successful firms, he contended, have to guard against the activities of existing rivals, buyers, suppliers, new entrants, and potential providers of substitute products....

...Data The table below contains the data that was calculated using a time step of 10 seconds for the first 80 seconds. The data was marched forward in time for a total of 3500 seconds. Using the complete table, a graph was produced showing the temperature for each node as a function of time for the first 3500 seconds of exposure. Located on the graph below the table, I have indicated the location of the node with the highest and lowest temperature in the beam. The graph represents the temperature versus time for each of the 20 nodes. The Fourier equation used for this data at a time step of 10 seconds is: Fo = , where and l^2 = 0.0016m^2 Therefore Fo = 0.0031. The Biot equation used for this data at a time step of 10 seconds is: B = hl/k , where h = 10W/m^2K , l = .04m and k = 0.5 W/mK Therefore B = 0.8 Table 1. ...Albert Perez Prof. Ellen Simpson Novotny ASU English 102 Assignment #7 May 3, 2013 Step 7 Who are my readers? My readers are people on both sides of the fence of stereotyping… those who do it as well as those who have been stereotyped. What do we believe? Stereotyping is a very negative condition that can harm individuals across any age, race, gender, religious belief or demographic region. Because stereotyping has no boundaries, anyone can be subjected to the emotional and psychological harms that it can create, affecting one’s self-esteem. What common ground do we share? Because any group of people can be stereotyped, we are all subject to the negative effects that it can have. Every single person and group, even the powerful or pure can be stereotyped by another person or group. What do I want my readers to believe? It’s important that my readers understand the effects that stereotyping can have and to give information that may pay it forward by stopping stereotyping from happening now, which may help prevent it in the future. What do they need to know? I believe that many people do not understand the impact stereotyping can have on an individual. Negative stereotyping may stop someone from doing something because of the thoughts and stereotypes of others. It affects an individual’s self-esteem and can even create additional stereotypes in their mind of people who stereotyped them. It’s truly a vicious cycle. There are several types of stereotypes consisting...
