Energy Summary
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Not many people are familiar with the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and how we as a nation benefits from it. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, is located in the Northeast corner of Alaska, is positioned north of the Arctic Circle and 1,300 miles south of the North Pole. The Alaska National Wildlife Refuge is approximately 19.2-million acres that was created in order to give provisions to a variety of plant and animal life of any Park or Refuge in the circumpolar arctic. This area served as a vital factor due to the ecological and evolutionary process because of the fact that different kinds of life forms can grow. In 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act renamed "Range" to "Refuge," and increased the two areas of the Refuge and assigned a big part for Wilderness, let Congress have a portion of the coastal plain for oil and gas development, and designated three Wild Rivers (Voss, 2006). There were mixed feelings in reference to discovering of oil on the land with concerns of whether or not the drilling would cause harm the areas of the ecosystem. Even with the concerns, and after confirmation was made on the negative impact that the drilling would cause with the ecosystem the senate and the House of Representatives passed measures to allow it. There was jobs created from this, and the cost of the oil was less than imported oil in 2004. This also created an ecological footprint of the arctic oil development as a whole, by 64%. Drilling oil in the ANWR will be beneficial is that it has no negative impact on animals, it already has grown from 3,000 animals to 32,000 (Arctic Power, 2000). In considering the advantages we also have to look at the disadvantages of drilling. There is much concern that if a dependency is formulated on a temporary fix for the oil issue there will eventually be a greater need for foreign oil when domestic oil runs dry. Is that really a need to disturb the life that the wildlife has developed over the past years? Also this can be very expensive because there is not a definite on where the oil really and truly is. It could also ruin the land for many years to come when or if we run out of more much needed supplies (Messerl, 2006).
Yuca Mountain The United States has a major concern with the buildup of nuclear waste, and trying to find an area where waste can be stored. One projected site is in the Yucca Mountains of Nevada. The people that reside in Nevada have mixed emotions in reference to this. The people of Nevada feel uncomfortable about the radioactive waste being stored there with fear of foreseen and unforeseen dangers. The usage of this site will cause an increase in taxpayer’s dollars drastically. The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates the total cost of its high-level waste management program at $25-35 billion. Completing the scientific investigation and licensing of the Yucca Mountain site is expected to cost $6-7 billion alone. At the end of 1993, total nuclear waste fund expenditures through the end of the year were nearly 3.7 billion. Very little of this money comes from individual investors. Although the community has many concerns about the project going forward, there are many reasons that the project should move forward. The people question the safety because the volcanic eruption, it has been proven that there is a slim chance that a volcano will cause a disturbance with the storage of the waste, and because of the dryness and warmth, there is less likely the possibility of an earthquake. Not much water runs through this land, so there is a lesser chance of water contamination. Overall the environment can be considered to be safe. During this period, if a breach occurs, the western United States' water supply could become contaminated, and cost the federal government even more to clean. Will the United States be willing to spend that type of money, now or later? The safety of a severely dangerous material is a matter of national security. If a breach were to occur and contaminate the western section of America, it would be more devastating than a nuclear bomb. That is why the Yucca Mountains are being speculatively chosen for this purpose. Although there are many things to consider, at this point in time, the Yuca Mountain is the best place by far.
Three Gorges Dam Three Gorges Dam, is a very distinctive project; this has been by far the largest project in China since The Great Wall of China. This dam will hold strength in measures. The dam will be large in magnitude; it will be over 607 feet high and more than a mile wide. The people of China welcome this dam, however one challenging factor is that because of the uncertain stability of the dam, different sicknesses have been considered, as well as many inhabitants will be forces to leave what has been known as the animals home, and find another place to live. The building of the dam will also take up many acres of farmland causing some people to have to move. Ethically because of the river has many religious and metaphorical conations, the creation of the dam will be an unfair decisions to some; however the overall picture has to be taken under consideration. The Three Gorges region represents one of the true seats of Chinese civilization. Although each case study was different, all play a major impact in the infrastructure of the economy, and the consideration of the people as well as the conservation of wild life. There are many factors that have to be taken under consideration in order to formulate a just decision on whether to move forward with a plan, or not. Once these factors are discovered and analysis is made, then the proper decision will be made in order to continue on with plans that are best for the world.
