The steps are basically an investigation process. The method is an ongoing cycle day in and day out. Some of the steps in the scientific method occur at the same time, in a different order or even can be repeated during the experiment in order to improve the conclusion. (about.com 2011). What steps are taken? Typically, the scientific method involves the following steps: First, ask a question or other questions in relation to the subject or topic. The questions need to be specific in order to provide direct focus to the inquiry. Secondly, research the topic. The research needs to be detailed in order to learn as much as possible to help with your question. Third, formulate a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a statement regarding the cause and effect of the situation surrounding your question. Fourth, Test the hypothesis. ...Science Meets Real Life Angela Adams Kaplan University SC300: Big Ideas in Science: From Methods to Mutation Investigation A health department investigation has been initiated to discover why students have been missing school. In my research I have found both Truman and Jackson Middle Schools to have above average absentee records for the month of May. I was able to review school event calendars, interviews with students’ parents, attendance records, school announcements and messages. These items for review are what I used to be able to present my evidence and form my two hypotheses. Hypothesis number one is, “Could exposure to the West Nile virus be causing the children's symptoms?” Hypothesis number two is, “Could unsanitary food conditions in the area be making the children sick?” I was able to dismiss further questions whether the West Nile Virus could be the culprit, as there was only one school announcement mentioning it, and there was no other evidence to support the spread of the West Nile Virus. However, upon a thorough investigation of my second hypothesis, concerning unsanitary food conditions, I found two restaurants that had been cited for poor sanitary food practices. Explain. There seems to be a spike in absences at the Truman Middle and Jackson Middle schools’ band class. The spike in Truman Middle school occurrence took place between the dates of May 20th and May, 21st with close to 35% absent. In Jackson Middle school the occurrence took place at the same time with 25% absent. It seems there may possibility of an out-brake of some type of viral infection that has caused so many student’s to be out of school. There seems to be some type of epidemic because it happened in Truman Middle on May 20 & 21st then dwindle down beginning March 22nd, and at the Jackson Middle school on May 20th then this dwindled down on May 22nd. The attendance shows no major impact in all other classes and middle schools. Truman Middle school had an absentee percentage of 33.3% on May 20th and Jackson Middle had a 25% absentee percentage and was due to the band class, all other classes had a normal absentee percentage rate (Community Health Department, 2012). By definition there must be five steps in order for the scientific method to occur. The first action is observing something that piques one’s curiosity. The second action, questioning, may occur simultaneously. Something is seen, and questions come into the observers mind like “Why does that work like that?”, or “What would happen if…” The third action is called the hypothesis, which everyone remembers from grade school means, an educated guess. This can also be referred to as a prediction. Logically, the fourth step is to test this hypothesis through experimentation. Finally, an explanation is created as a result of testing the hypothesis (Pruitt, 2006). It is important to note that the experimentation phase of the scientific method can be a very lengthy one. The results of experiments may support one’s hypothesis, but further experimentation may be needed to account for other factors or scenarios. If the experiment does not support the hypothesis, more research may be needed as to why. More experiments will follow. The activity I chose has students looking at trees within a forest near the school. That leads me to the setting of the story. The shorty, “The Rental Heart” is written by Kirsten Logan in 2010. We do not know where and when the short story takes place. Neither do we know if the main character is a he or she. In my interpretation of the short story, I have interpreted the main character as being a she. The main character is portrayed by a third person limited narrator, because we hear the story from the main characters point of view.
