Sports Architecture in Modern China: a Comparison Between 2008 Olympic Venues and 1990 Asian Games Venues

...monumental in Chinese history, almost a century ago, Chinese scholars dreamed of the Olympics being staged in China, which marks sovereignty and power of the country in a global view. Therefore, when the long time expectation is about to become real, the primary goal for Chinese government and citizens is to show the best part of China to the world. This paper focuses on what and how the Chinese have done in order to accomplish the mission of hosting a successful game. A number of Olympic architectures are reviewed in terms of their locations, the cultural meanings behind as well as their unique characteristics. At the meantime, in this paper I try to compare Olympic venues with their counterparts built for the Beijing 1990 Asian Games, due to their close relations, which I will further explain in the later session of this paper. I. Location of 2008 Olympics and 1990 Asian Games venues An international comprehensive sports game usually consists of a main stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies are held, and a village that multi-functions as accommodation, gymnasium, catering, etc. to athletes, trainers and officials, as well as other venues where various sessions of a game are hosted. My Leadership Philosophy

...Throughout my life I have been influenced in my leading style by many amazing leaders who I one day aspire to be like. The main influence on my leadership has been my mother, who is a teacher and an amazingly invested leader. She is dedicated to the growth of the people she leads and teaches them to be advocates for themselves and gives them room to learn to develop their own ideas. She is a firm believer in the idea of stewardship, and cares about and gets to know the students she leads. I have also been influenced by several of my science teacher throughout the years, not only to pursue a science career, but also to grow my leadership skills through finding my passion, looking to the future, and learning from my mistakes and growing from...

The goal is to help transition Larry smoothly from activity to activity without an outburst or constant redirection. Larry is very food motivated so having a treat (healthy) could help encourage Larry to follow directions the first time with no outburst. I would like to do an activity that teaches Larry his feelings and ways to turn his feelings of anger into something good, or at least recognize the anger and prevent a tantrum. To help learn about feelings and how feelings affect others I would read books to Larry about feelings such as Finn Throws a Fit by David Elliott, How Are You Peeling? Foods...

Statement of Purpose I am applying to Stanford University for admission to the Ph.D. program in Computer Science. I am interested in Theoretical Computer Science, particularly in the Design and Analysis of Approximation Algorithms, Combinatory and Complexity Theory. My interest in Mathematics goes back to the time I was at school. This interest has only grown through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more and more about the subject. Having represented India at the International Mathematical Olympiads on two occasions, I have been exposed to elements of Discrete Mathematics, particularly Combinatory and Graph Theory, outside the regular school curriculum at an early stage. The intensive training programs we were put through for the Olympiads have given me a lot of confidence in dealing with abstract mathematical problems. My exposure to Computer Science began after I entered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay. The excellent facilities,...

Student Interview Essay

...assistant principal of the school. The PACT teacher was not in on the day I conducted the interviews, however I was able to conduct the interview through email. I also planned to interview a gifted student in the PACT program, but unfortunately the student was sick and not at school. Nonetheless, I believe I received a great deal of information from the stakeholders that I interviewed and I think I have a fairly vivid image of what PACT is. PACT is a team of resource teachers that rotate to serve schools within the district. So the PACT teacher I interviewed does not work at Roosevelt Middle School, rather she works for the district and rotates to different elementary and middle schools where she offers highly challenging activities in science, humanities, mathematics, and language arts. This is why I was unable to have a face to face interview with her. I also found out that PACT serves roughly 800 hundred elementary students alone in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. The teachers of PACT also seem to be fairly qualified as employees must have a gifted and talented endorsement. As we learned in class as the correct way to identify gifted students, PACT uses multiple criteria to select students for their program. Or as stated by the National Association for Gifted Children, gifted programs should use a combination of objective assessments that are quantifiably measured and subjective instruments such as personal observations in order to identify gifted and talented...

Characteristics of a Gifted Learner and Ways of Enhancing Them

...Meeting the needs of gifted learners poses a challenge for most educators, thus gifted leaners need to be identified and nurtured for the benefit of gifted learners, educators and the community at large. This essay is going to examine 3 blanket characteristics of a gifted learner and suggest strategies to enhance giftedness in teaching and learning process. Eric (1985) groups characteristics of gifted learners into general behavioural, learning and creative features. A variety of approaches can be used to meet the needs of gifted learners in the classroom. The teacher or educator has the following our areas when developing the curriculum: * The content of the curriculum subject * The processes that engage the students * The products of their studies * The learning environment Definition of terms Giftedness Definition 1: Giftedness is ‘a synchronous development’ in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm. This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity. The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching and counselling in order for them to develop optically (Columbus Group, 1991) Definition 2: Giftedness is the possession and use of untrained and spontaneously expressed natural abilities (called aptitudes or gifts) in at least one ability domain to a degree that places...

Technology & Ecnomic Development

...Research Paper The role of science and technology education at network age population for sustainable development of Bangladesh through human resource advancement Gazi Mahabubul Alam Faculty of Education, University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. E-mail: gazi.alam@um.edu.my. Tel: +6037967 5077. Fax + 603-7967 5010. Accepted 25 September, 2009 Education is supposed to play a vital role for the development of a nation. Many countries made progression through education. Nevertheless, some of them also failed to retain the development achieved since these countries failed to supply required skilled workforce for emerging economics caused by globalization and rapid change of economic pattern. This now forces policymakers to prioritize the production of skilled manpower that can contribute for sustainable development. The countries that achieved sustainable development have given a high priority to science and technology education in formulating education policy. Bangladesh has no more alternatives in order to gain development, except properly utilizing its population. Bangladesh’s economy and human development could have grown faster than its actual progression in the last 25 years (that is, since independence in 1971), if it had earlier taken substantial steps in educational development. This paper has defined a ‘network age population’ for Bangladesh. This paper also suggests that this population is required to provide science and technology based education...
