The Roman generals Scipio Africanus and Pompey the Great are two of the most recognizable names in all of Roman history, and their accomplishments have been hailed over time, even in the modern era. These two men were set apart from the ordinary Roman commander, and for good reason. In many ways, they had uncanny similarities in leadership, tactics, and achievements, even though they lived around a century apart (p.172). Despite their apparent similarities, each one had individual characteristics which set him apart from the other, and indeed, from all other generals before or after, hence their exalted status in history. To truly understand why the two men are remembered so well, several factors must be examined: The time period in which they held command, their personality traits, and the tactics that won them success on the battlefield. He was brash, daring, and self-confident. These attributes helped him considerably, and won him favor and jealousy within the ranks of the Senate over time (p.202). He married several times, mostly for the purposes of political connections and wealth (p.179). According to some historical accounts, he even joined his men in battle, notably against Oroeses, fighting in the mold of Alexander the Great (p.198).
Pompey’s greatest accomplishments included eliminating piracy in the Mediterranean, and winning several wars in the Eastern reaches of the empire. These required considerable tact and skill at military strategy and leadership, and outwitting very competent foes.
