...The division of Nova Scotia to create the province of New Brunswick in 1784 set forth a wave of migrating Loyalists to settle this new province. Many of them settled on the ruins of abandoned Acadian villages where many Acadians had settled their families. After the destruction of the “Pointe-Saint-Anne” village in the winter of 1759 by Lieutenant Moses Hazen and a group of rangers, where he was only able to capture three of its families, many of the Acadians were able to flee the village. Some of these Acadians fled west and settled near the Malecite village of Ekoupahag. Afterwards, many other Acadians started to settle nearby, and some settled at what became French Village. One of the pioneers of the French Village was Jacques Daniel Godin who was the grandchild of Gabriel Godin who was one of the founders of the Acadian village of “Pointe-Saint-Anne”.1 The French Village was situated about seventeen kilometres from what became the City of Fredericton, and is now part of Kingsclear.2 There are stills ruins of what seems to be an old church that burned to the ground, and also an old cemetery where we can find Acadian tombstones mixed with those of the Loyalists’.3 1. The largest city at the time was the city of Halifax, and the economy was based on things such as fishing, agriculture, and ship building. Both East and West Canada had their own railways, but neither of these had joined up with the other colonies. Since the St. Lawrence river froze yearly during the winter, this then caused transportation by water to stop. ...In true Bishop style to derive order from disorder, she does so within the poem’s structure. “First Death in Nova Scotia” is a five-stanza poem wherein each stanza contains 10 lines. The stanzas appear short and compact, where the number ten could be associated with any number of things. Age ten is often the age that begins to blur the line between freewheeling childhood imagination and adult reality, where death begins to stew in the young mind as a formal concept. Moreover, age ten sets the tone and age for the narrator and Arthur. If these lines were any longer, it would be uncharacteristic of the individuals that are featured. Ten also represents a simple base value for the surrounding world. Children first learn to count on their fingers...

...The Efforts of a Fisherman: ISU Essay The life of a fisherman in the early 1900's was not an easy life. Six out of seven days were spent toiling for long hours, putting oneself into extremely dangerous situations, doing the same repetitive tasks year in and year out. This is exactly what life was like for Nova Scotian fisherman, David Jung. Jung is the protagonist in the novel, Rockbound by Frank Parker Day, a story of the small, desolate island Rockbound on the south shore of Nova Scotia in the early 1900’s. The book’s plot is set around the timeline of David Jung’s life. It tells his life story from when he was a young orphan at thirteen to when he is happily married living on his own island. In a classic book like this, one can pull numerous themes away from it. Author Frank Parker Day clearly demonstrates the theme of relentless effort will eventually pay off. This is shown through the conflict, the setting, and in major events in the plot. Rockbound is filled with many literary devices to illustrate this theme, but conflict is one of the most effective, specifically person versus person and person versus nature. An example of the former surfaces right in the beginning of the novel, when David is attempting to get a job at Uriah’s fishery. When David asks for the job, he is immediately turned away, but with persistence and relentless effort, David eventually wears Uriah down. “’I knows how to work’ repeated the boy… ‘You ain’t got no place around here’, ‘Yes I is…...

...Dear Shai, Hope all is well in London; I truly miss my family dearly. Cousin it still seems unreal to me that I’ve been captive from my homeland and enslaved in these traitorous lands. Being beaten by these wild white men who treat you like an animal, wanting you to call them master if he was my god. I have been praying to my lord and savior hoping that he gives me way to gain my freedom to start living a better life, and I feel as if he has answered my prayers. There was a group of us reading a proclamation written by John Murray and he stated that “I do require every Person capable of bearing Arms, to His majesty’s standards, or be looked upon as traitors to his majesty’s Crown and Government, and thereby become liable to the Penalty the Law inflicts upon such Offences; such as forfeiture of Life, confiscation of Lands, and I do hereby further declare all indentured Servants, Negroes, or others, free that are able and willing to bear Arms.” Meaning if we are bold enough to runway from our master’s and fight the Americans for the British crown we will be granted our freedom with free land. I truly feel like this is my calling to fight in the war to stay loyal to the crown. I have nothing to lose! I am willing to risk my life escaping this plantation that I am forced to work hard labor on being beat like a cage animal. Dreaming of one day being free to live my life, having my own land to raise a family on and building my own legacy. There’s no reason for me to be a loyalist...

...Within Australian culture the phrase The Mahogany Ship refers to a putative, initial shipwreck that is reputed to lie beneath sand dunes west of Warrnambool. The phrase along with the question of how it would have an impact on Australia’s history relates back to the Eighteenth through to the Twentieth Century; a period of time in which our continent was engulfed with inquisitive explorers seeking untouched soil. Shockingly, this ancient ship is continuing to exhaust historians as its wreck and background will potentially rewrite the entire record of Australian history. Since the Eighteenth Century British explorer James Cook has been acknowledged for discovering the south east coast of Australia. However the theory of the Mahogany...
