...Emmanuel L. McCall, Jr. Ms. Woods GE-117 4 MAR 2014 Advertising and Consumerism Over the years, advertising has been an effective means of selling products and promoting new services. Advertising for various products help consumers save money. It also puts money into companies bank accounts. Advertising new store openings provide employment opportunities for consumers out of work. Advertising also helps the environmental conservation. Advertisement is information. It relays opinion, and it inspires a reaction and it influences emotion. Advertising reaches the consumer in various ways through T.V., radio, newspaper, billboards, mobile advertising, magazines, and on the internet. However, many people argue that its successes have brainwashed consumers into spending money on items that they do not need. Many people also believe that advertising does not effectively sell products, it simply persuades the population to buy, buy, buy. I will discuss three areas of advertising to show advertising and consumerism is good and bad. The world of advertising shows many products that are displayed by companies to try and get consumers to purchase it. Lutz, William. “The World of Advertising” Dialogues. Ed Gary Goshgarian. Boston: Massachusetts, 2003. 319. Print. When sales or coupons are advertised, it helps consumers save money. Advertising has no boundaries. It ranges from clothing,...

...November 21, 2013 Writing Workshop Mythology “Myths are common stories at the root of our universal existence” (Seger). In the essay written by Scott Russell Sanders, "The Men We Carry in Our Minds" discusses Sander’s perspective on men in comparison to the impression that women carry in their minds. The essay, “Creating the Myth” by Linda Seger shows on how stories are based on our own life experiences. Sander’s argument about how the impressions of men or women are based on ones life experiences relates to Seger’s depiction of myths through the use of rhetorical questions and dialogue. Primarily, Sander uses rhetorical questions in order to discuss how ones life experiences illustrates stories of myths. Sander addresses about when he experienced a situation where he met women telling him men have plenty of joy and privileges. He writes, “and for the first time I met women who told me that men are guilty of having kept all the joys and privileges of the earth for themselves. I was baffled. What privileges? What joys?” (Sander 229). Sander is shocked to find out that women feel that way about men. It is an amusing statement to assume that men have certain stereotypical characteristics in society because it is not necessarily true that woman cannot do some things similar to men. Life responsibilities are equally made for everyone. Sander disagrees and pushes back to how much of a struggle men have to go through in life, equally as women. These questions enable us to think about...

...For example, he he recalls Theodore Roethke's lines about his own father in "My Papa's Waltz". (Sanders, 103) This source describes how distraught the author was with his father when he came home from work. When Sanders explains how he could smell the alcohol under his father's breath it made him sick, but he knew he would have to take care of his father no matter the circumstances. These lines from Roethke enriches Sanders' essay because it relates the situation to death, which describes how hard it was for Sanders to deal with this and how it had affected his life, Sanders used an example from the Bible which explained a story about a lunatic and a swine. The basis of the story told was that the lunatic was possessed by demons and needed to be cleansed by Jesus. Sanders relates his father’s alcoholism as being possessed as well. Sanders wished his father could be somehow saved by Jesus and would help rid him of the awful “demon drink” just like the redeemed lunatic. This adds Sanders' essay because it gives give him hope that his father will be cured. The final three paragraphs help further explain the trauma that was imprinted on Sanders from his father's alcoholism. In some ways Sanders ended up like his father when he talks about being a “workaholic.” He felt responsible for his father's disease, so he always worked hard to rid himself of the disappointment he felt. Carrying...

...Knowledge is the Enlightenment, Necessary for Evolution: In Plato’s, “The Allegory of the Cave,” he is explaining in dialogue with question-and- answer form with Glaucon a student questioning the nature of human beings. The analogy of the cave and the prisoners within used to explain his belief. He discusses moral and philosophical problems; the prisoner must overcome to see the light after long periods of imprisonment. The light he refers to as a fire blazing at a distance, is the light the prisoners see while a low wall is along the way. The prisoner look over the wall to find strange images that he has never seen before is compelled immediately to look toward the light. The question then is would the prisoner suffer pain from the glare brought forth by the light, Plato then explains he will require to grow accustom to the light in order to clearly see the new images. Once the prisoner becomes accustom to the sight of the upper world, he will then see the reflection of others and of himself. Plato then explains the reaction the prisoner makes and his thoughts of himself to realize the reason about his own place. The prisoner, as Plato explains, realized that this exposure of new images in the upper world are not of what he was taught to be true in his old place in the den, and the wisdom brought forth by the den along with his fellow- prisoners; merely false notions. The truth the prisoner has seen in the upper world will then become a desire to continue to seek further the...

...Issues related to technology’s presence in our lives "The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do". (B. F. Skinner) Technology advancements has been both a blessing and a curse, the benefits of faster, simpler and better has caused society to not only be physically lazy but mentally lazy as well. Society tends to rely on technology probably more than they should, remote control vacuums, talking refrigerators, and controlling appliances from miles away has taken away just small chunks of brain power, but as technology continues to evolve, those chunks keep adding up and soon humans won’t need to use their brains for much of anything. While technological developments have made life amazingly easier, simpler and anything is just a mouse's click away, it has brought several negative health impacts, psychological problems and stress in daily life. Furthermore, the presence of technology in the world today has created many benefits and issues in almost every facet of life. For instance, in Business, companies are much more productive due to the various advancements in communication. Company provided cell phones, email and instant messenger are just a few of the ways that colleagues, bosses and customers can communicate, allowing instant access and quicker results. One of the newer advancements that I have used recently is called “Telepresence”, which is real-time video conferencing that has the effect of people literally being in the room together when...
