The book To Kill a Mockingbird, Takes place in Maycomb County Alabama. Scout, the narrator, lives with her father Atticus and Jem, her older brother. Scout is a reliable narrator because she’s understanding, she’s brave, and lastly, Scout is smart.
The first reason why Scout is a reliable narrator is that she understands more than people think. People think that Scout can’t understand things just because she’s young. ”Aw hush. Whenever Scout is in a dangerous situation she remains calm. “I made my way along in what I thought was the direction of the road” (Lee, Page 252). This quote reinforces the thesis because the fact that Scout could stay so calm when her brother was hurt and being carried off shows that she can give reliable information, even though she may be shaken. Scout is brave because she’s not worried to stand up for those she loves. “Don’t you touch him!” I kicked the man swiftly” (Lee, Page 204). This quote justifies the statement because it was really valiant of Scout to protect her brother like she did. This proves she’s a reliable narrator because she has a good point of view on the situation and she is experiencing it first hand. Finally, because Scout is a child she uses her innocence to talk to adults. “Entailments are bad,”I was advising him…” (Lee, Page 210). This concluding quote supports the fact that Scout is a reliable narrator is that she is very forthright because she is a child.
