Screwed in Kava Hello my name is Nik. I am a new employee within my company, Wal-Mart and been sent to Kava to spear a new project. In first arriving at Kava, none of my preconceived expectations were accurate. I was thinking that I was coming to a paradise island where even a horrible work day would be overshadowed by the beaches and sunset. Instead I first saw a place with many problems and even more issues that needed to be addressed. In layman’s terms I was screwed. My dreams and hopes of working in paradise were over, and now it was time for me to create a new dream that helped my employer that sent me here and the people of Kava. First I had to analyze the issues I was faced with in Kava. In simply composing a list of the issues, I had to consider in the list the environmental, social, and economical threats. In the beginning phase of analyzing the environmental threats, Alex made me aware of the tidal waves, typhoons, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. (Oh yeah, did I mention that Alex is a co-worker that I am assigned to work with). In attacking the environmental aspects, I will have to research building materials conducive to this climate and the natural resources available to build. I will have to do some research on the best building materials to withstand the environment and be cost effective. I will also have to take into consideration that over 50 percent of the general population is under fifteen years old. I will have to remind myself to analyze how that is going to affect my available work force. Another thing that I hadn’t taken into consideration was the natural resources that Kava has at our disposal. The natural resources I was thinking of where things such as cocoa, spices, sugar, coffee, bananas, fishing, natural gas, inexpensive labor and of course tourism. I have a lot of work to do. In analyzing the matter at hand my question is “how can Wal-Mart have a successful presence on the island of Kava”, and how can Alex and I make that happen. I have decided to start listing my findings in a force field analysis technique. It something I learned from my college days that have proven to be quite useful over the years. I am going to have to speak with Alex about things and get a few of his ideas as well. [pic] In conclusion, I have a lot of work to do and even more problems to work out. In trying to show Wal-Mart as a driving needed force in Kava, Alex and I will have to come to terms with what Kava really needs. The obvious shopping needs of Kava could be met by Wal-Mart, but we have to also review what Wal-Mart can do for the community and the people of Kava. We have to make the stakeholders understand that we are not just here to make money, but we want to bring help to the community. Hey maybe I will talk to Alex about the probability of Wal-Mart piloting a Boys and Girls club. We have to make sure we are giving instead of just receiving marginal profits.
