Overview
In this course, I feel happy with my instructors. She is really nice and kind teacher to lead me how to thinking and how to writing. I have finished 3 projects in this courses, I found that I improve my writing skills and get some experience about writing. In my opinion, the most important thing in writing is thinking. I am sure that a good idea is more important than good writing skills. Now, when I write essay, I would not write immediately. But I will research the background and collect many information about the essay. Then, I will think and reclaim all information so that I can have my own ideas. For this three essays, was my favourite, because I spend a lot's of time on it. This was my first time to read such long article in my life. I need to pay attention to understand the writer's idea and try my best to find the main idea, main sentence and supporting sentence. Obviously, there are many misunderstand words, but I learned to catch the information what I understand and guess the main idea. So that this essay influence me to learn new writing skills. For my prompt, I was happy to my instructor to give us a chance to visit historical place. I went to Massachusetts State House in weekend, I learn that if you want to write a good essay, you should open your eyes. That's can help you to accept new ideas and easy to absorb different opinions. At last, the Beauty essay make me learn that everything has different side based on different angles and values. In this essay, I tried to describe my opinion which is the beauty is not mean beautiful. The beauty is produced by cultures, value standards and customs. I am happy to take this course in my second semester, I believed I have new ideas about college writing. I will keep writing, because it's good for me to study.
Miller and Blindness is a good essay to describe education problems and the writer Miller is a famous professor in writing. His structures are really useful to help readers understand the main points and the main idea. In addition, Miller use specific examples to persuade readers and he will start from a example to describe his idea. This will make readers think and easy follow him. In my opinion, the education is the most philosophical argument in the world. Because the education is the key about culture inheriting. After the World tow, the education system is change a lot with developing technologies. For example, students can search online to get information to instead read book and newspaper. On the one hand, the Internet make education more quickly, directly and convenient. Students can search information from Internet and they can use Google and other search engines to find information directly. Also the Internet make a convenient bridge from students and teachers, they can meet online to discuss the questions. On the other hand, the Internet and computers make people change their reading habits. More and more young people perfer computers to books and newspapers for reading. The Internet including many information and knowledge. All the information and knowledge are not good for young people. So that the young people may get bad information and bad education from the Internet. This is really harmful for young people and the society and the Internet become a new culture. Young people change the vocabulary when they chat online. Many new words are produced from the Internet. It's not good for students to learn their language. There are two cases in American history: one is Columbine High School event, and another one is a sixteen boy entered his high school to kill the principal and another school ( David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky, p420) these two cases made us to think that why did this happen and who is to blame. The students took the high school education, but why they would have the minds to kill people. The education system improve quickly with high technologies, but the education system ignore how to teach students to be a person who is psychological health. There is a challenge which is the education system how to control students' behaviors in varied background. ( David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky, p421). The education system should collect the students information and make a individual tutorship for the special students. The Internet and high technologies make the information spread more faster and easier so that the students may learn some bad information to have a wrong idea easily. The education system should teach them what is correct and what is wrong. As we know that, the young people will make their value and standards in teenager. In that time they will contact with the society and get different information from outside. In addition they have no ability to distinguish these information and they may be mislead by the wrong information. The Internet high technologies help students studying and also may spread wrong information to them. The education system should focus on Student's psychological health and help them to studying in the right way. The education is not only to teacher knowledge to students, but also educate students be a good person to enter the society. The education system is not for teacher students to get high gpa, it's for teacher students to learn knowledge and make contribution for the country. In America, there are some case that the high students take gun to shoot their teacher and classmates in campus. This is good teaching material by negative example of education system didn't educate students a good standards and values. This is really important to students to distinguish the outside information. In conclusion, the education is the main point in our life. Students must understand how to distinguish what is right and what is wrong when we take information from Internet and outside. Students should use the best to learn knowledge and make a good standards and values. At last, students should use many studying equipments to study and keep the good study traditions.
Beauty
Beauty (also called prettiness, loveliness or comeliness) is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure or satisfaction.( OED Online. December 2011. Oxford University Press. Retrieved February 11, 2012) In my opinion, beauty means the perfect. The perfection has no weakness and show the best side to everyone so that I believe the beauty means the perfect. For example, many Americans love Jordon who played basketball in NBA and got 6 Final Champion in his career. He is the perfect player in the game so that he show the beauty of basket to every fans. He got many honor from games and he tried to over top himself. Why he can be the god of basketball? Because he is perfect basketball player, he is the key of the game. He always made Clutch Shot and lead team to beat back. We love him because nothing can stop him and show the perfect to us. Perfect is my definition of beauty, but there are many kinds of beauty in the world. The different cultures and different experiences can effect people's definitions of beauty. This kind of perceptual experience is subjective, thus leading people of different viewing angles to different judgment of beauty. One may regard the ruggedness of mountains, abruptness of wave, powerfulness of wind, intenseness of rain as beauty of the nature. While others may prefer the vastness of plains, silence of brook, coolness of breeze, lightness of drizzle. Whereas there are always some objects that win the majority approval to be beautiful, such as fair complexion, double-edged eyelid, Roman nose, soft fur, fancy cuisine, delicate garments, grand castles, sacred churches, gorgeous jewelry, diamond and crystal, to name just a few. Simultaneously, the artery perception of beauty is closely related to regional culture. For example, in North America, the Africa Americans always Wear comfortable jeans, they thought it's really fashion. But in Chinese culture, People will believe that's will be rude. But which worth the whistle is that the mainstream of perceiving beauty is changing with times. For example, chubbiness is considered as beauty in Tang Dynasty, whereas people in the contemporary prefer heart-shaped face and slim figure. Women in ancient times wore their hair in a bun while nowadays some women would like to have their hair in a bob, and the story for men is in the contrary. Although the perception of beauty is historically determined, something is eternally to be beauty during the whole process of history, which is the praiseworthy characters of person, such as sedulity, acquittal, goodness, rectitude, reliability. When it comes to beauty in the aspect of persons’ character, what is universally known is that physical attractiveness and internal loftiness are not necessarily in accordance. Notre Dame de Paris is a classic literature incisively and vividly presenting a comparison of the beauty and ugliness of humanity. Quasimodo, the bell-ringer of Notre Dame, was a barely verbal and deaf hunchback. He was so ugly that people despise and shun him for his appearance. Claude Frollo, the Archdeacon of Notre Dame, was a person of normal appearance and sanctimonious nature. He crazily loved a beautiful girl named Esmeralda, and was determined to kill her if he cannot occupy her. He imputed murdering Phoebus de Chateaupers to Esmeralda, however, Quasimodo rescued her from the gallows and shield her in the cathedral. In a word, Claude Frollo was a devil in human form, while Quasimodo was an angle with ugly appearance. To sum up, beauty of a person is judged by his intrinsic character rather than physical attractiveness. People with the most beautiful appearance will be ruined to be a walking corpse and running flesh by jealousness, atrocity, cattiness, insincerity, inhumanity. And people with ugly exterior will be worshiped as the Virgin Mary by goodness, loftiness, chasteness, sympathy. Beauty is subjectively judged, universally recognized, regionally preferred, historically changed, and eternally determined. Beauty is something flexible, in the meantime, it will be attached to some carriers, which is concrete as person, animal, place, object, and abstract as idea, emotion. It hid itself in everywhere and is waiting for “the eye of the beholder”. (. The Phrase Finder. Retrieved December 4, 2007)
Prompt
In this weekend, I have been to Massachusetts State House which is located in Boston in the neighborhood Beacon Hill. The Massachusetts State House, we also call it New State House. I got some information about the Massachusetts State House on the Introduced monument. It's a memorial of America, and the house was built on land once owned by John Hancock who is the first governor of Massachusetts. After I arrive the house, I saw there is a large dome of State House, it was covered with copper during 1802. It is really beautiful and artistic. The whole building is historical for me and I heard people's discussion of this building. During World War 2, the dome was repainted again and I think the historical building is a history expanding. As we know that, Percy believed that we can never reclaim the sovereignty of a place completely. "What has taken place is a radical loss of sovereignty over that I which is as much theirs as it is the ethnologist's. The fault does not lie with the ethnologist. He has no wish to stake a claim to the village; in fact, he desires the opposite: he will bore his friends to death by telling them about the village and the meaning of the folkways. "(, Percy walker, the Way of reading). Of course we can not back to past, but the historical place or building can tell us what happen in past. I am sure that we can take the history and experience from the memorial. Because the memorials were made by our pionners. They hoped that these memorials can send some information to us. So that we can receive it and understand it. When I visit the Massachusetts State House, I heard the other travellers talk about this building and talk about a period history about the building. For example, they were interesting in discuss the dome was re-gilded with 23K gold in 1997. This is a good effect of the historical building, it influence us to dig out more history about past time. This like photo, it can't keep time, but it can memorise. I was thinking why the dome would be re-gilded with real golden. It's experience and luxurious for Massachusetts. But when I rethink the name of the house. I suddenly realize that this house is the symbol of the state and it's not only a house, but also it symbolize the America was the strongest country in the world. Maybe this house want to show the process of how the America become powerful and American history to us. So that, the dome was be re-gilded with golden to show how powerful America was. Also Percy's idea told us we can get authentic experience when we remember to critique theory. I agree with that, but I believed that the memorials is not only give people some authentic experience. That's a narrow angle to look the memorials of country. In my opinion, all the memorials are the symbol of the country. They are including the history, art and humanity. So that we can get all of them when we visit memrials carefully. They are the expanding of the history to talk us what happen and how happen in past. People can get experiences when they thinking about the history. At first, when we visit some place or memorials, we have chance to touch the old architectures. We can see the different architectures' style and get first impression. Then we can find some text information when we visiting. Thus, we can got some details to know the places or memorials. At last, we keep critique theory to think about what we learned and what we saw. We can have our own independent ideas about them. Therefore, the memorials or some places were the expanding of history, they sent information for the travellers and help travellers to learn history and get experience. But the most important thing is that the travellers would think about the information what were sent by the memorials and have own opinions. Percy also mentioned that A degree of sovereignty has been surrendered by the couple. It is the nature of the loss, moreover, that they are not aware of the loss, beyond a certain uneasiness. (Even if they read this and admitted it, it would be very difficult for them to bridge the gap in their confrontation of the world. Their consciousness of the corn dance cannot escape their consciousness of their consciousness, so that with the onset of the first direct enjoyment, their higher consciousness pounces and certifies:"Now you are doing it! Now you are really livingl" and, in certifying the experience, sets it at nought.)"(, Percy walker, the Way of reading). When time flying, a degree of sovereignty must be decrease. But we still can get the main idea from the memorials. I mean it's just kind of emotion which is save in memorials. When people go there and visit the memorials, they can get information from past. This is the reason why we will built so much memorials. Because we want to keep the good emotion and record excellent behaviors to be memorised by descendants. After I visit the Massachusetts State House, I am sure that it's not only for visit a memorial of America, but also I keep the critique theory to think about American history. I noticed that how the America become such strong country in the world. I learn something and experiences from that. Maybe it's hard to describe, because it's a thinking process in my mind. But I am sure that I learn, because of I am thinking.
