The Ocean Sail

This picture was taken by myself in Galveston, Texas. I am not a big fan of taking pictures, but this one was different. It made me feel like there are some sides to me that have not been discovered yet. I am learning new things about myself and there’re still things I will experience for the first time in my life. I felt in love with this ship; I felt like I always loved sailing and the sea but I never knew it until that day. I was staring for a long time at the ships sails and trying to read it. That wasn’t crazy, I just tried to have a conversation with a ship. I felt like it has a story, how couldn’t it. That’s what it does; it goes sailing in the oceans and seas for weeks or months. I wondered if it could tell its own story. What would it say?

I wondered it would be a sad, long story. It told me about the years it spent over the sea and every time it looked at itself in the clear water. It said to me how it gets older every year and how it could notice. Maybe it would tell me how strong it was while riding one of the meanest storms in the sea and how it fought it’s way while the wind blew and how it then lay on one side during the storm trying to avoid sinking into the wide, blue ocean.

It told me about its strong crew and how devoted they were during the storm. It said of how scared it was it when the storm got stronger, threatening to leave it stranded and surrounded by water from everywhere while water would be pouring inside forcing to sink it, but the crew; they would not give up on it and how they’d see how impossible the feat but they lived together for many years when all they had was her; it’s their home. She’d always stay and fight by them and surely they would do the same for it. She was certain they would.

“It was as if I never felt a thing during my 85 years of sailing the ocean,” the ship would say. There must be a connection built between me and the sailor and the crew, its not an option in our field, because we face danger, waves and winds all the time during our voyages That’s why I think people treat me well, they rely on me and I rely on them, that’s how our connection started.
It said, “I will tell you a story.” I had listened so closely as if it were telling me a secret.

Sealing Mechanism

...Sealing mechanism: 1) Radial shaft seals: Radial shaft seals, also known as lip seals, are used to seal rotary elements, such as a shaft or rotating bore. It is widely used for in applications of full submersion of seal and shaft. Advantages: - Aviods leakage sufficientally - Prevent contamination which can harm components of the system. Operating conditions ( pressurized conditions) : Pressure ≤ 10 bar Temp -30 to 140oc Design: Lip ring with spiral spring for radial preloading Short but pressure stiff flexible, spring- preloaded sealing lip. 2) Stuffing box ( Gland seal) : The stuffing box prevents sea water from entering the UV hull. In many cases the stuffing box is mounted inboard near the point the shaft exits the hull. Design: The "box" is a cylindrical assembly, typically of bronze, comprising a sleeve threaded on one end to accept adjusting and locking nuts. A sound stuffing box installation is critical to safety because failure can admit a catastrophic volume of water into the UV Advantages: In a common type of stuffing box, rings of braided fiber, known as shaft packing or gland packing, form a seal between the shaft and the stuffing box. Ideally, the compression is just enough to make the seal both watertight when the shaft is stationary and drip slightly when the shaft is turning. 3) End face mechanical seal: An end face mechanical seal uses both rigid and flexible elements that maintain contact at a sealing interface and slide...

Peak Sealing Technology

...Peak Sealing Technology Yash Malhotra 1st March, 2016 Peak Sealing Technology is a recognized adhesive industry leader in innovation and quality. Its products are widely used for manufacturing and packaging applications. The adhesive market was really competitive when it came to sealing tapes for cartons. These products were available in different varieties and at a range of prices. Though PST’s K-2 tape was a superior product, it competed with other products that did not provide the same quality to the consumers but were much more economical. Hence, Peak Sealing Technology was in a dilemma of whether or not to produce a more economical and a low quality product to compete better with its peers and acquire a better market share due its brand name. The main issue that Peak Sealing Technology faced was of having a lack of competitors in its product’s range. This lead to the K-2 tape competing against much inferior products in the market. If PST decides to introduce an economical product in the market, it could face a variety of issues: * It would lower the brand value of the company and it would not be considered as a premium product * The price war will eventually decrease profitability * Its new product in the market might cannibalize the sale of its superior products Hence, I recommend that Peak Sealing Technology should not introduce an economical product in the market, it could market its product better by educating price sensitive consumers of lower long...

Sealing In Newfoundland In The 1930's

...Sealing “Tis jest a dog’s work while it lasts, but somehow there’s an excitement in it, that sets young fellers kind o’ restless in the spring….a man, ’ll go for swile where gold won’t drag ‘un.” A quote by fishermen John Saunders in Newfoundland and Her Un-trodden Ways 1907. The industry itself was known as swilling (sealing) and between the 1830s and 1930s it occupied the minds and bodies of 20 thousand or more Newfoundland sealer/fishermen and 400 vessels, usually half the male population between Notre Dame Bay and Trepassy Bay. During the peak years of the 1840s an astonishing 500,000 seal pelts would be taken annually. For comparison, during the same period, fur seals in the north east pacific were hunted to near extinction. The business...

Bonding and Sealing Plastic Windows

...Marine Application Guide Bonding and Sealing Organic Windows Application Description Most of the organic glazing materials used in boat building are either clear acrylic sheet (PMMA), widely marketed under trade names such as Perspex and Plexiglas (the latter manufactured by Rohm and Haas), or polycarbonate (PC), marketed by Bayer GmbH as Makrolon and by General Electric as Lexan or scratch-proof Margard. All plastic glazing products possess certain characteristics that must be clearly understood before they are installed or bonded with adhesives. In general, incorrectly installed plastic glazing panels are prone to environmental stress cracking (ESC). This can be aggravated by the use of the wrong adhesives. Sika Transportation_99 Plastic glazing products have a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than conventional glass. Therefore, when designing glazing installations, an expansion gap of at least 10 mm all round the periphery must be incorporated between the window rebate and the plastic glazing panel to accommodate thermal movement. Similarly, any clearance holes for fixing screws must be drilled oversize; slightly larger than the diameter of the screw shank. To minimise the risk of environmental stress cracking, flat sheets of plastic glazing material should be installed completely flat; they should not be forced to take up a curvature by the use of mechanical fastenings. When the design calls for curved glazing panels, these...

Luxury Cars

...CASE STUDY Luxury cars use Reinz’s sealing and shielding products Edited by Simon Atkinson Reinz-Dichtungs-GmbH’s sealing technology has earned the German company a strong position across the board in the luxury car sector. Its sealing and shielding products are being used in the new Audi A8 and the DaimlerChrysler Maybach. Sealing products from Reinz-Dichtungs-GmbH & Co KG have been used in a number of luxury cars. Its successful contribution to the MercedesBenz S-Class, the BMW 7-Series, the Porsche Cayenne and the VW Phaeton is the main reason why its seals, gaskets and shielding systems are now being used in the new Audi A8 and in the DaimlerChrysler Maybach luxury saloon. Partial coatings ensure improved heat transfer between the engine block, gaskets and cylinder heads. This allows component temperatures to equalize faster to help prevent the parts from warping. The manufacturing process is also more efficient. Easily recyclable waste and up to 70% less coating material makes these products more environmentally friendly. High-torque power plant The heart of the new DaimlerChrysler Maybach luxury saloon is its high-torque power plant. On this car, Reinz was chosen to supply all sealing and shielding components used in the car’s 550horsepower, 12-cylinder engine. This engine’s extremely light design (which has a total weight of about 270 kg), coupled with demands for a long service life, low noise levels, and smooth power delivery, meant that the performance requirements...

False Claims Acts: Should They Be Sealed?

...States Government has been responsible for massive expenditures for government operations involving taxpayer dollars. Unfortunately, with all the different organizations and transactions transpiring, there have become endless opportunities for fraud or deceptive practices. The government enacted the False Claims Act for help in controlling the deceptive practices and additionally giving them a viable tool to expose the fraudulent acts. The False Claims Act allows a whistleblower or “qui tam” to come forward and help aide the government with the massive ongoing fraud that is enacted everyday against the government. A much needed provision that helps ‘seal’ and protects the whistleblowers identity was added into the FCA. The protection by sealing the name when a claim is enacted by a whistleblower is important because it allows the whistleblower to help the government with the pursuit of fraud while protecting the whistleblower from backlash from their employee or organization. There are many organizations within the Government that spend an enormous amount of taxpayer dollars. From within these organizations fraud and deceptive practices are found, and sometimes are a regular practice in everyday expenditures. The Government cannot stop or find all of the illegal practices going on within, but for the ones that can be identified there is the False Claims Act (FCA) for a whistleblower or “qui tam” to come forward and report the deception. The whistleblower under the FCA has...

Charitable Volunteering

...In February 2012, I had the opportunity to visit (SAFB) at XXXXXXXXX with my classmate, XXXXXXXX. The purpose of my visit was twofold. First, I wanted to learn more about the SAFB, the XXXXXXX complex and how each operates to help the hungry. Second, I wanted to donate a few hours of my time to a charitable organization. My four hour volunteer day at the SAFB started at 0845 at the main security entrance to the XXXXXXXX complex. All visitors to the complex must sign in and out complex and are escorted by XXXXXXXXX personnel to and from their destination while visiting. After signing in, name tags were issued, and security called the XXXXXXXX Coordinator to pick us up from the security building. We existed the security building and met the volunteer coordinator halfway to the XXXXXXXXX building that housed the kitchen. On the way the volunteer coordinator gave us a quick overview of the mission of the SAFB. The SAFB’s mission is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through distributing food, educating the public regarding hunger, and acting as advocates for those suffering from hunger in 16 counties surrounding San Antonio. After reaching the XXXXXXXX building that housed the kitchen, we entered the building through the main dining room that prepares up to 500 meals three times a day for the residents of XXXXXXXXX complex and other venues for food distribution. The volunteer coordinator took Elsa and I to the administrative offices area to secure our personal...

Their lines are heavily focused on premium industrial strength tapes, carton sealant and other packaging products. PST are steadily expanding their net sales and have experienced huge growth over the past 5 years. One of their product lines is known as K-2 tape, a pressure sealing tape of which there are nine variations. Recently Tensile, a competitor in the industry, released a new economy line tape of which PST believe may quickly become a threat to them. Now, PST are debating the consequences and outcomes of releasing an economy line tape to reduce the likelihood that Tensile’s cheaper Ecoslim and Ecoslim-wide will replace two variations of K2 tape in consumer minds.  However, as this contradicts their established reputation as a premium brand, careful analysis of the industry, end customer and distributor forces, and company relationships and needs is required. PST must use this analysis to address two key challenges – retaining their current customer base, and ensuring their premium reputation remains untarnished...

...a lot of heat from the inside and makes pollution (Wang, 2009). Therefore, because of those dangers characteristic, how to handling and storage the nuclear waste materials safety and permanently is a serious problem for every country. Scientists from many countries used to think about several ways to storage the nuclear waste materials, and the way to storage is according three types of specificactivity nuclear waste materials, which are high-level wastes, mid- level wastes and low-level wastes. There are two necessary requirements about safety and permanently storage the nuclear waste materials, a sealing container and a safe place. Because of some kinds of high-level wastes have over ten thousand year radiate period, so it is hard to find a sealing container can contain in such so long time, therefore it is a big problem to scientists. The safe place is easier to find than sealing container, it can be the universe, land or sea, but he common method is cover some mid-level wastes and low-level wastes under the ground about twenty or thirty meters deep, then build a radiation barrier around the storage pit. Most of low-level wastes and mid-level wastes...
